Which Colorado is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 21–22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 2.8L 4-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 23–25 mpg |
- The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Colorado that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission731 crash
Transmission shudder dominates. Owners describe a rumble-strip feel, stutter, or hesitation on acceleration, often between 20 and 60 mph and worse on hills or when towing. Reports cluster around 32,000 to 40,000 miles, with a second wave near 90,000 and beyond. A GM bulletin calls for a fluid flush, but dealers often cannot duplicate the problem, decline the work, or flush it without success. One torque converter failure ruined the transmission at 76,000 miles. Keys stuck in park, rear differential clunks, a parked rollaway with 2 injuries, and a crash after all four wheels locked also appear.
Electrical22No crashes
Ignition keys that will not turn to off or come out of the column are the most repeated fault, sometimes draining the battery. The touchscreen misbehaves too, with phantom taps, calls put on hold, the backup camera switching on at highway speed, and frozen or foreign-language displays. Wiring harnesses chafing against hot A/C lines cause random warnings, sudden downshifts, and in one case fuel line damage. Doors that lock and unlock on their own, transmission limp mode, and one fire that started behind the rear seat while driving round out the reports.
Steering17No crashes
Power steering cuts out without warning, sometimes in extreme cold, sometimes toggling on and off mid-turn. The wheel can also bind or jam during turns. Failures cluster near 40,000 miles, where owners paid for a new electric steering gear. Some cases trace to chafed wiring that sets off a cascade of stability and steering-assist warnings, and one truck lost engine power along with steering. Dealers often cannot reproduce these intermittent faults. Several reports here again involve keys stuck in the ignition, plus a steering shaft rattle and wheel shake at 35 to 70 mph.
Fuel system6No crashes
Fuel leaks are the main concern, and one led to a fire under the bed that totaled the truck. On the diesel, a fuel feed line rubs against an A/C component until it wears through, reported around 60,000 to 70,000 miles. Another owner paid out of pocket for a detached high pressure fuel pump that a recall should have covered. Other reports describe cold-start stalling with no codes, a repeatedly blown injector fuse on the 2.8L diesel causing power loss, and a broken flapper in the filler pipe.
Airbags51 crash
Side curtain airbags and seat belt pretensioners fire with no crash. Two reports describe this while driving slowly off road, one of them in 4WD Low. In one crash into a tree line, the airbags did not deploy. Another complaint describes loose metal rattling in the driver door pillar near the side airbag. One owner reports a dealer refusing to perform an airbag recall repair after deciding the truck had been tampered with.
Engine4No crashes
Few reports, but the ones filed are serious. A factory engine block heater is blamed for an engine compartment fire while the truck sat parked and plugged in. On a nearly new truck, an oil cooler line hose failed and emptied the oil quickly, with a check engine light and falling oil pressure as the only warning. On the 3.6L, a cold-start rattle traced to the camshaft timing actuator becomes more frequent with age. One complaint filed here actually describes transmission shudder.
Suspension4No crashes
On the ZR2, the Multimatic DSSV rear damper can leak out its fluid, leaving the truck unbalanced off road or when towing. One ZR2 frame bent at the cab-to-bed area after hitting a dip at 25 mph while towing a 2100 lb trailer. Another report describes front end clunking over bumps at very low speed. One complaint filed here actually describes a flickering dashboard and radio, which is an electrical fault.
Body and structure4No crashes
A hood that bounces up and down while driving persists after a latch adjustment in one report. Another describes the bed sides buckling and rippling at 69,000 miles. The remaining reports are miscategorized: a backup camera screen too bright to see at night, and a mix of dashboard gurgling, high idle at startup, and hood paint flaws. In these cases dealers either could not duplicate the issue or did not repair it.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Colorado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Upon acceleration the truck felt as if we were riding over rumble strips. No lights/warnings. Although this was ongoing whenever driving, the truck continued to operate normally otherwise. Searching the internet noted a problem with this year/make/model with the transmission - one search result suggested submitting the information here. The dealer flushed the fluid today and told us it might take up to 200 miles for the shudder/rumble to stop.

clunking in the transmission, when slowing down it feels like you got rear-ended. Then when accelerating from a stop the transmission seems to slip and then catch and then engages and shoots you forward, feels like it surges forward. TSB to replace the transmission fluid was done at about 18k miles, it didn't fix its still doing it now. It did it since day one from the factory and the TSB didn't correct it.

A/c lines near driver side wheel well has chafed through fuel line and wire harness.Causing a couple thousand dollars in damage.Nor warning indicators leading up to either incidents. My chevy dealership mis diagnosed it twice and has now found the issue. Fuel lines leak can cause fires and as far as the electrical issue I've been left stranded with my 3 year old daughter a couple of times..Have looked up forums and many people have had the same issue.

Electrical problems with Chevrolet Mylink display. A variety of errors include backup camera flashing on at highway speeds, hands free phone calls put on hold, navigation screen flashing random inaccurate destinations. These distractions impair safe operation of the vehicle. Dealer verified issues but could not perform diagnostics on a timely basis. Issues continue.

Ignition tumbler and steering wheel locked. Could not turn key, could not turn wheel. Truck was is park on flat driveway. Tried all basic instructions (three adults) and then called mobile mechanic. He could not get it to turn either and could not remove steering wheel cover to access ignition tumbler to replace. Truck is three years old. Had to have it towed to dealership.

Key cannot be removed from ignition. I bought my truck 6 months ago and it’s been in the shop 3 times bc I can’t remove my key. Last time it left me stranded at my veterinary clinic at 1 AM after dealing with an emergency because the battery died. It appears as though I am not the only one having this issue

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2018 GMC Canyon, 2016-2017 Buick Envision, 2016-2018 Chevrolet Colorado and Malibu, 2017-2018 GMC Acadia, 2018 Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain vehicles. Risk: A damaged fuel line can create a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pump, and high pressure fuel pipe, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2018. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
