Which Maverick is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Maverick. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, FWD25–26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD37 mpg
  • The 2022 Ford Maverick was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Maverick that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Maverick, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission155No crashes

Front CV axles wear out early, and this is the main complaint here. Drivers feel shaking or a wobble in the cabin when accelerating. No warning light comes on. Failures cluster between about 20,000 and 65,000 miles, and some trucks need a second set. Replacement axles are often back-ordered for weeks. A smaller group reports the truck dropping into reduced-power mode or losing all power on the highway, sometimes right after the 23E09 powertrain recall reprogramming. One injury report involves carbon monoxide entering the cabin.

  • Electrical1351 crash

The truck goes completely dead, usually after being parked. It stays stuck in park with no lights or hazards, and sometimes the doors will not unlock. Reports start as early as 8,000 miles, and some trucks have gone through several 12-volt batteries. Other drivers get a "Stop safely now" message or lose power while driving. In one fire report, a front seat heater burned through its cover. A frozen backup camera image led to one crash. Cracked welds near the driver door hinge also show up.

  • Brakes842 crashes

Hybrid brakes behave unpredictably below about 10 mph. Light pedal pressure does little, then the brakes bite hard with a jolt and often a loud clunk. It happens when parking or creeping through traffic, and many drivers notice it from new. Dealer software fixes and the service bulletin help briefly before the problem returns, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Two reports involve crashes. Rear pads and rotors also wear out early, and replacing them requires a dealer-only service mode.

  • Engine54No crashes

The gas engine shuts off or loses power while driving. Sometimes only electric drive is left, or the truck will not go past about 30 mph. Warnings such as "Service Engine Soon", "Stop safely now", and powertrain failure messages appear, though some events come with no light at all. Dealers often cannot find a cause. Several complaints concern long waits for parts for the 23V380000 engine recall. One report describes an engine fire, and another describes a burning odor in the cabin that caused headaches.

  • Airbags204 crashes

Most complaints concern the 22V594000 side curtain air bag recall. For months, dealers had no replacement parts. Four reports describe crashes where the air bags did not deploy, including side impacts in which occupants hit their heads on the windows. Separate faults involve the occupant classification system and the rear seat belt monitor. These trigger an air bag warning light or a question mark on the dash. In one case the restraint control module had to be replaced.

  • Body and structure15No crashes

Spot welds on the front door check break, usually on the driver door. Signs are creaking or popping when the door opens, a door that swings freely and will not stay open, and a window that only lowers about an inch. Complaints cite Ford's 23B56 program for the Escape, but some VINs are not covered. Water intrusion is the other pattern. Rain gets into the footwells, soaks the carpet, and grows mold. Leaks are blamed on the cowl, the windshield, or a rear window seal.

  • Steering141 crash

Most complaints filed under steering are really CV axle failures. The front end shakes or shimmies under acceleration, usually from about 30 to 50 mph and up, and calms once the driver lifts off the gas. Failures often come back after the axles are replaced, sometimes after the warranty has run out. A more serious pattern is a sudden loss of all power that takes the power steering with it, at highway speed in some cases. One crash with an injury involved a locked steering wheel and a rollover.

  • Suspension14No crashes

Shaking and vibration under acceleration, mostly at highway speed, trace back to worn front CV axles again. Reports put failures around 20,000 to 30,000 miles, with others near 61k. Some trucks fail again after repair, and back-ordered parts have left trucks unrepaired for months. Loud knocking, clicking, and clunking from the front end over bumps or while turning also come up, sometimes after dealers found nothing wrong. A few reports describe inconsistent brake pedal feel with a front-end clunk during slow stops.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Maverick owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
My hybrid has an occasional shudder/rattle/vibration noise when the gas engine switches off. Started around 1900 miles on the odometer. Occurs at all speeds with the most noticeable shudder/rattle/vibration noise when stopped. I was worried that the transmission may cease to work and leave me stranded in traffic. There were no errors codes and no warning lights. Has been at the Ford dealer for 26 days as of today with no resolution nor a diagnosis.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Transmission
The battery (new) needs to be jumped several times a week. This happens when it goes into sleep mode. Also, the vehicle stalled twice while turning left (in electric mode). My dealership could not fix the problem, but gave me a print out in mechanic terms. I have had so many issues with this hybrid. Ford did say it qualified for the “lemon law”, but then they said no. I have only put on 5000 miles and there’s been several updates and recalls

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
2 year old Truck died , changed battery and still is totally dead . Had to jump the truck to start . Problem is from battery to computer . Called ford and there’s no warranty since is 35000 miles power train . Very disappointment , did some searching and everybody is having the same problem . They said ford is charging $3000 to repair

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Electrical
Vehicle had a check engine light go on for voltage. At 4K miles. Later that day loss complete power nothing electrical worked and it had to be towed to dealership. Stayed at dealership service for over a week trying to diagnose it.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Brakes
Under 5 miles an hour, brakes are sometimes unresponsive or inconsistent for the first couple of degrees. When creeping up on another vehicle, parking spot, or building it gets nerve-racking when the breaks don't catch causing me to react and gradually press the breaks harder until it catches all at once and I'm jerked forward. When the breaks catch, there's also a loud thunk. I suspect it's something to do with the regenerative breaking system.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2022

Brakes
This is the Hybrid version. Under 5 mph the brakes grab very quick and are very unpredictable. This is a extreme safety issue. When coming to a stop in traffic or just pulling into the garage you dont know how it will stop. Ford issued a TSB repair to correct this but after 300 miles it is back doing the same thing. There are thousands of other folks having the same issue, Ford needs to repair this before someone becomes seriously hurt.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Engine
Engine shut down at speed. Power totally went off. No power steering. Service engine light came on. I was able to restart vehicle but it kept shutting off. Vehicle starts with engine warning light but cannot be derived without shutting down. this has happened twice. Once with about 200 miles and the second time with 3,500 miles
