Which Colorado is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 21–22 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 2.8L 4-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 22–23 mpg |
- The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Colorado that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission31No crashes
A shudder or shake at cruising speed is the dominant complaint. Drivers compare it to rolling over rumble strips, usually under light throttle between 25 and 80 mph, with no warning lights or stored codes. Dealers often apply a transmission fluid flush under a service bulletin, but the shudder tends to come back within months. Some trucks then need a torque converter or a full transmission replacement, often just past the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hard shifts from first to second gear and a grinding rear differential bearing also come up. Owners call the sudden shaking a highway safety risk.
Steering8No crashes
Power steering assist can cut out suddenly, sometimes with a "Service Power Steering" message and sometimes with no warning at all. Owners describe steering that goes stiff at low speed, locks during right turns, or jerks hard to one side, and several report near crashes. One report involves an injury while towing a trailer. Dealers point to corroded electrical connectors in the power steering assembly, a repair quoted at $3000. The intermittent stiffness has shown up as early as 16,000 miles. A few complaints in this category also cover the key sticking in the ignition and repeated alignment problems.
Engine7No crashes
A failed camshaft position actuator is the main engine fault. It brings on a check engine light and sometimes a sluggish truck at highway speed. GM issued a special coverage bulletin for this part, but some owners find their VIN is not included or that a salvage title rules out coverage. Other reports describe a thermostat failing before 50k miles, which leaves the cooling fan running long after shutdown, along with a temperature gauge climbing into the red. Oil cooler lines rust through and leak, and replacing them takes extensive teardown.
Electrical4No crashes
The infotainment screen goes black or turns into a pixelated green display. That also takes out the backup camera image. In one report the screen failure came before a dash fire in the parked, switched-off truck that set off the passenger airbag. Apple CarPlay drops connections mid-drive, which forces drivers to handle their phones. Other complaints describe a camshaft position check engine code and a key that stays stuck in the ignition long enough to drain the battery. Owners report paying up to $700 out of pocket for the ignition fix.
Seat belts21 crash
Only two reports fall here, and neither describes a typical belt defect. In one, a rented truck at 10,000 miles flashed a seat belt failure warning at highway speed. The brakes then would not stop the truck, smoke filled the cabin, and flames appeared underneath once it coasted to a stop. Two people were injured. The second report is crash-related but gives no details beyond an attached document.
Brakes2No crashes
At highway speed the brake pedal goes hard and the truck will not stop normally, so drivers have to use the emergency brake. One of the two reports also describes smoke pouring from the front and rear vents and an ABS warning light, with one injury. In the other, a dealer suggested a faulty vacuum pump as the cause. Both describe a sudden loss of braking while moving.
Exterior lights2No crashes
Two separate faults appear. Drivers say the low beams are too dim to light unlit back roads well. Separately, the third brake light seal leaks, water corrodes the electrical connections, and the light eventually stops working. That leaves following drivers without the center brake signal.

COMPLAINT # 11630574 Transmission Shudder, took to dealership on 09/28/2023 had transmission flushed and changed fluid to new style transmission fluid, per GM under warranty. I was told that if it needed done again that i would have to pay to have it done and would cost approximately $400- $500. On 12/13/2024 the truck is shuddering again at 48,700 miles.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
A transmission shudder has developed. It seems to be a known issue that Chevrolet has tried to resolve, but it is present in my vehicle. It started to develop around 60,000 miles ago and has progressively gotten worse.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
Power Steering suddenly stopped functioning as I was towing a trailer approx 5000 lbs. ‘Service Power Steering Drive With Care’ popped up on dash. No dealership visit as this just happened. Truck is unfit for driving safely.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2021
The component that failed is the camshaft position actuator. My check engine light came on. Had my vvt solenoids replaced and the mechanic told me the actuator needs replacing. GM has issued a special bulletin to fix this part for the same year make and model as my truck but my vin doesn’t meet the criteria. I have only owned this vehicle for 8 months.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2025
Unknown. When my truck reaches a certain speed it is jumping or missing, it feels like a brake is sticking but I’m told it is a problem with my transmission, torque converter, going bad. It is getting worse. It cuts the power down on the vehicle. If I can go faster than 60 it doesn’t do it.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
It's occurred twice and I recorded it the second time. The infotainment display goes to a green multicolored pixelated screen and doesn't allow me to see what is behind me. If I can't see like I'm supposed to with the reverse camera technology, would this not be a safety concern if a child, or handicapped person -blind, deaf, or both- got behind me somehow?
