Which Tacoma is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.7L 4-cyl4WD, RWD20–21 mpg
3.5L 6-cyl4WD, RWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2022 Toyota Tacoma was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tacoma that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission91 crash

Transmission trouble dominates these reports. Drivers describe shudder under load, gear hunting with the engine revving between shifts, clanking from the bell housing, and black, burnt fluid. Outright failures are reported between 35k and 40200 miles. Other complaints describe the truck popping out of 2nd gear when cold, brief loss of power when accelerating, and Hill Assist releasing so the truck rolls backward. One crash involved a truck rolling down an embankment after being shifted into park. Dealers often cannot duplicate the problem or find no fault code.

  • Airbags88 crashes

Every report here describes air bags that did not deploy in a serious crash. All 8 complaints involve a crash, with 10 injuries. The impacts include rear-end hits at highway speed, side impacts at intersections, and a frontal collision with an elk. Several reports say the seatbelts did not lock, or that airbag and seatbelt malfunction warnings appeared after impact. Others saw no warning beforehand. In one case the manufacturer blamed the occupancy sensor for not detecting a passenger. Reported injuries include a torn disk and injuries that required surgery.

  • Brakes61 crash

The most common complaint is a soft brake pedal that sinks toward the floor. It is often worst at a stop or on a cold morning. Some dealers call this normal. Others have replaced the master cylinder or brake booster, and in one case the master cylinder failed again after it was replaced. Other reports describe long stopping distances, pulling to one side, and wheels locking on a downhill or a steep driveway with Hill Start Assist active. Grooved rear drums caused seat vibration in one truck. One report involves a crash.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Paint peels and flakes on white trucks, mainly around the rear cab window frame and on the inner fenders, sometimes down to bare metal. Toyota runs a customer support program for this paint defect, but owners report being told their VIN is not covered, including on Super White paint code 040. Separate reports describe corrosion on frame welds within 6 months of purchase, which ended in a lemon law replacement, and corrosion where the windshield meets the roof.

  • Electrical41 crash

Random stalls at any speed are reported. All the warning lights come on, the engine shuts off, and it needs a restart. Other complaints describe a speedometer that stops working or reads 80 mph while the truck is stopped, and blurry exterior cameras on a TRD Pro that the dealer called typical of 2022 trucks. One crash report says the truck accelerated from a parked position with the brake pressed and the steering locked, then struck a neighbor's home. No injuries were reported.

  • Engine4No crashes

The most repeated issue is hesitation or a dead spot when pulling away from a stop, which nearly caused collisions while merging into traffic. One report adds rough idle, a misfire on a steep climb, and a metal-on-metal clanging from the engine bay. In another case a warning for the engine, throttle, or transmission control system appeared at 36,303 miles. A dealer called a leaking coolant hose a known issue. None of these complaints involve a crash.

  • Steering2No crashes

Power steering pumps leak. One truck needed a new pump at 33000 miles, and the replacement was leaking again by 45500 miles. The same truck had a timing chain seal leak that required pulling the engine. A separate report describes steering wheel jitter starting around 45,000 miles and a steady pull to the right, later traced to a worn front wheel bearing at 78k miles. With only 2 complaints, no broad pattern is established.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

Sidewalls fail early. One report describes repeated blowouts on 265/65/R17 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires within 8000 miles, at highway speeds and correct pressure, with no road hazard. Another describes cracking tires and several patches. Neither Nitto nor Toyota responded to the blowout complaint. Only 2 complaints exist, so the evidence is thin. A sudden sidewall failure at speed still carries a real loss-of-control risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Tacoma owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

AirbagsCrash reported
I hit an elk on the road. The elk came in direct impact with the front of my truck. No air bags deployed despite the force of the significant frontal impact. There had been no warnings or messages leading up to this that the airbags were not functional, nor was I notified that these airbags were part of any recall. To my knowledge, they are not. The vehicle is currently at a collision center for estimate preparation for the insurance company.

AirbagsCrash reported
I was driving on the highway and a semi truck hit my car from behind, pushed my car and I hit the car in front of me. I was doing around 55 mph when thee truck hit me.The airbags did not deploy. but the airbag light was lit up on the cluster. Later I received a message through the toyota app about a malfunction on my car's airbag system, that I have to contact the dealership to get it fix.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Brakes
When starting especially in the morning my brake pedal is very mushy and goes very near the floor. When driving and have to break it sometimes goes down a little too far. The dealer said this was normal. I do not feel it is safe. I've never had a vehicle do this. If this is safe I don't want it.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2022

Brakes
In March 2022 brake master cylinder failed and was replaced. Today March 14, 2024 notified by dealer that brake master cylinder has gone out again. Toyota certified dealer working with Toyota on fixing. This creates a major safety issue with braking system.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Body and structure
Within 6 months the new vehicle showed significant corrosion on 80% of the frame welds where the frame is connected to other structural parts, suspension and steering. This was taken to Toyota as a warranty claim. Ultimately a Washington State lemon law arbitration awarded replacement of the vehicle (Wash State AG File# 240122 5 September 2024)

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturer (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. The axle shaft sub-assembly may separate from the axle housing due to debris causing improperly secured fasteners.

Risk: Axle shaft separation can cause a loss of vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly, tighten the axle retaining nuts as necessary, and repair or replace any damaged components, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 17, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB05 and 24TA05.
