Which Colorado is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.7L 4-cyl4WD, RWD20–22 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Colorado that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Sudden brake system failure

    193–517 miles

  • Transmission downshift and power loss

    3,000–4,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical231 crash

Instrument cluster and infotainment screen go black or reboot while driving, which leaves no speedometer or warning lights, sometimes at highway speed. Dealers replace clusters and radio modules or load software, and the problem often comes back. Other reports describe several warnings appearing at once (ABS, brake, ESC), followed by lost braking, automatic emergency braking with nothing ahead, and a left signal that flashes after a right turn. Batteries go dead during over-the-air updates. One report describes smoke, lost steering and brakes, then fire. Some voice and hands-free features stop working unless the owner pays for an OnStar subscription.

  • Brakes142 crashes

Brake pedal sinks to the floor or turns spongy, often with "Brake System Failure" and "Service ESC" warnings. Braking returns after a restart, then the failure repeats. Several cases happen on nearly new trucks, at about 200 and 517 miles. Some dealers can't reproduce it. One case is tied to low-voltage codes. A second pattern is uneven front pad wear, worse on the driver side, blamed on a caliper spring. A bulletin covers some trucks but not all, leaving owners with bills near $500. Two crash reports say automatic emergency braking did not engage.

  • Automatic emergency braking71 crash

Brakes slam on with a clear road ahead, at speeds from parking-lot pace up to 55 mph, and drivers behind nearly hit the truck. The system also sees pedestrians that aren't there or fails to warn before a real near-collision. The front camera shuts off with obstruction messages even when the lens is clean. Blind-spot lights come on with no traffic nearby. Dealers replace the camera, sometimes twice, and the fault continues. One failure shows up at about 425 miles. One report links a rear-end crash to sensor faults.

  • Engine7No crashes

Coolant leaks at the upper radiator hose where it seals to the radiator, with one hose failing at just over 20K miles. Owners hear a whooshing sound, then see a check engine light once coolant runs low, and they worry about overheating. Replacing the o-ring does not always stop the leak. One truck loses its engine at highway speed from a failed crankshaft at 28,000 miles and needs a new engine. Other reports describe a rough cold idle with a misfire code, the accelerator hesitating for several seconds after braking, and an oil drain plug insert breaking loose from the pan.

  • Exterior lights6No crashes

After a right turn, the signal cancels and then flashes left about three times. Owners say the stalk bounces past center, and it happens on some turns or on most of them. Bulletin 24-NA-235 is performed on at least one truck without fixing it. Dealers call the behavior normal or don't know how to repair it. Some owners report it from the day of purchase. Other drivers may expect a left turn that never happens. A separate complaint describes headlights too weak to show lane markings at night in fog or rain.

  • Transmission5No crashes

Harsh 2nd-to-1st downshifts get worse until the truck shudders and knocks, and a dealer replaces a valve in the valve body. That one starts around 3000 miles. Other trucks lose power at speed with transmission codes and need a tow, and one stops moving in any gear about a week after purchase. A rear main seal leak shows up at 150 miles and is fixed under a GM bulletin. Radiator hose repairs stall because the parts are back-ordered for months.

  • Steering5No crashes

Most reports here describe the turn signal problem again: after a right turn the stalk bounces and signals left, and it returns even after a dealer repair. One truck has stiff, hard-to-turn steering along with "Service Steering," "Reduced Acceleration," and ESC warnings and a loss of power, and the cause is still undetermined. Owners also report blind-spot lights flashing with no traffic around and a steering column cover that rattles loose.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Car wash blowers dent the roof or push it in. GM addresses this in bulletin 23-NA-209, which adds braces to the roof. At least one roof dents again right after that repair, and the owner's case stays open for months with no fix. Another truck makes a loud bang from the roof while parked, and the headliner cracks at about 3,080 miles. Owners worry the roof would not hold up in a rollover.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Colorado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
When my right turn signal clicks off, it activates my left lane change signal. Took to dealer and was told it functions as it was designed because the tech found two other vehicles that did the same. I've never had a vehicle do that. I don't want to be cut off because of this issue. GM sides with the tech. No one designs vehicles that function way. Been that way since I got it and I keep getting a snow job from dealerships.

Electrical
Right turn signal auto-cancel activates left turn lane change signal aproximately 60% of the time. This may cause confusion to oncoming traffic and could lead to an accident. Dealer did not road test vehicle, tryed to replicate problem with the vehicle stationary. This defect only arises while the vehicle is in motion.

Brakes
Bought my son 16 year old a new truck, truck only has 517 miles on it. He was driving 45 miles/hour on street, dashboard warning lights all lit up ABS, Brake and Check Engine. Brakes failed. Was able to pull into a parking lot eventually but a very serious safety issue/concern and this truck should be recalled immediately.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Brakes
Got notification of brake system failure on the dashboard and lost all braking ability. After the truck was shut off they worked again, perfectly fine. This scenario repeated itself and I lost breaks again. The truck has 200 miles on it and after looking online seems to be a common issue

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Automatic emergency braking
First occurrence I was traveling 55 mph down a country road at 7:30 a.m. driving into the sun and at 55 mph with a car following me My truck just instantly locked the brakes up and came to a stop. The second occurrence was at my son's school I turned the corner at a stop sign and right after I turn the corner and started accelerating the truck slammed on the brakes to an instant stop with no cars in front of me or in the other lane on coming.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Automatic emergency braking
Advanced cruise control system has twice applied the brakes when the road was clear ahead. First time was not a problem other than surprised me. Second time I was almost rear-ended by car behind me. Fortunately, only resulted in a dirty look from other driver. Could have been much worse. I have since de-activated the Advanced cruise system. My dealership is in process of diagnosing the problem.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V703000Seat beltsSep 2024

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Chevrolet Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon vehicles. The left or right front seat may have a seat belt buckle attachment bolt that was not tightened properly.

Risk: A loose seat belt may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will tighten the left and right front seat belt buckle attachment bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 30, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N242453720.

  3. 24V366000Wheels and tiresMay 2024

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Chevrolet Colorado vehicles. Incorrect tires may have been installed that do not match the tire label, and the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may provide inaccurate information for the installed tires. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 110, "Tire Selection and Rims" and 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems.".

Risk: A tire label that does not accurately reflect the installed tires may result in the installation of incorrectly sized tires. In addition, the TPMS may not warn the driver of a drop in tire pressure. Both of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the tires as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 19, 2024. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N242444030.
