Which Ranger is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Ranger. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Ranger that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Ranger, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission14No crashes

Erratic transmission behavior dominates these reports. Trucks hunt for gears, skip gears, clunk into place, and shift harshly, especially from 3rd to 4th. Some lose drive entirely and rev as if in neutral, or stick in 9th gear, sometimes in traffic or while passing. Others hesitate or jerk when pulling away from a stop, and a few surge to 4500 rpm on their own. Dealers often find no code. A Ford service bulletin covers harsh shifting, but only for trucks built before 08/15/2022. Separate reports cite a cracked valve cover and an unlit shifter.

  • Electrical7No crashes

Module failures cause most of these problems. A failed audio control module can disable the speedometer, fuel gauge, automatic braking, and blind spot monitoring all at once. A body control module fault can take out the tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals. Some trucks shut off at intersections or refuse to start, and dealers struggle to find the cause. Water reaching the ignition coils and spark plugs makes the engine shake violently and lose speed on the highway. Wipers that stick and a modem that won't connect are lesser complaints.

  • Engine2No crashes

Gasoline gets into the engine oil and overfills the crankcase, leaving a strong fuel smell in the cab and garage. Dealers reportedly advise more frequent oil changes and fewer short trips, and owners worry about fire. In a separate problem, the engine surges to 4500 rpm while stopped or creeping through town, starting within the first few hundred miles. Dealers find no stored code, cannot reproduce the surge, and replace nothing.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brake and accelerator pedals sit too close together, so a foot can press both at once. A pressed brake pedal rides lower than the gas pedal, which makes a slightly misplaced foot catch the accelerator too. The truck then lunges forward or fails to stop cleanly, including while reversing. No warning lights come on. These reports describe a pedal layout problem, not a failed brake part.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Ranger owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
I purchased a new 2022 Ford Ranger it has 6000 miles. I had it back to the dealer twice it hesitate when taking off from start at red light- stop sign and entering highway this in my mind is a safety problem when a care/truck hesitate in traffic there seem a problem with there new ECO-BOOST engine/transmission my truck will return again on 8/1 for another service call for the same problem.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Transmission
Started having issues with 10R80 transmission at 40k then a complete replacement at 53k, nothing but continued problems, now back at shop a week later for knocking and transmission.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Electrical
Truck cut off at an intersection without warning and would not turn back over. After multiple attempts and AAA service members checking batter car would not start. Has power but will not turn over dealership is saying there is a module issue but is not sure.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Brakes
When coming to a stop at a stop sign or light and your foot is a little off on the brake pedal you can simultaneously hit the brake and the accelerator pedal causing the vehicle to not stopping properly. The brake pedal is closer to the floor board when applied than the accelerator pedal.

Recalls to confirm (5)

Recall repairs are free at any Ford dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V685000EquipmentOct 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Lincoln MKC, 2016-2023 Explorer, 2019-2020 Fusion, 2019-2024 Ranger, 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair, Escape, 2021-2024 Bronco, Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

Risk: An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed December 3, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated February 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25SA4. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.

Risk: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.

  3. 23V379000EquipmentMay 2023

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Bronco, 2023 Super Duty F-250, and 2019-2023 Ranger vehicles. The Tire and Loading Information (TREAD) label states the incorrect load carrying capacity, which can result in an overloaded vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims.".

Risk: An overloaded vehicle increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Ford will mail a new TREAD label to install over the existing label, free of charge. Fix: Ford will inspect and replace the fuel line assembly, if needed, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 29, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S60.

  5. 22V451000Wipers and visibilityJun 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Bronco and Ranger vehicles. The windshield may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle, which could allow it to detach during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 212, "Windshield Mounting.".

Risk: A windshield that separates from a vehicle during a crash can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will remove and reinstall the windshield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22C12.
