Which Blazer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD23–24 mpg
2.5L 4-cylFWD23 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD21 mpg
  • The 2020 Chevrolet Blazer was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Blazer that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission54No crashes

A "Shift to Park" warning appears with the lever already in park, and the engine will not shut off until the shifter is jiggled or cycled. Dealers replace the shifter assembly, often at the owner's expense because the 2020 model was left out of related bulletins. Two injury reports describe the vehicle rolling away after the driver stepped out. Transmission complaints include slipping, jolting, and getting stuck in first gear, from very low mileage to as late as 130,000 miles. Thermostat failures and stalling in traffic also appear.

  • Steering30No crashes

A "Steering Assist Reduced" warning appears together with a temperature gauge stuck on cold, a check engine light, a cooling fan running at full speed, and air conditioning that blows warm. Some drivers feel stiff steering and struggle to hold a lane at highway speed. Dealers usually trace it to the thermostat or coolant temperature sensor, mostly between 55,000 and 70,000 miles. Several reports say the warning returns after those parts are replaced, and disconnecting the battery clears it only for a while.

  • Electrical27No crashes

A false "Shift to Park" message keeps the vehicle powered on after shutdown and can drain the battery. In one report the SUV rolled backward because it did not register park. The second large pattern is the coolant temperature fault: gauge pegged on cold, air conditioning and cooled seats quitting, fans running nonstop, and a steering assist warning. A battery disconnect clears it briefly. Less common reports describe the instrument cluster going black and the engine stalling at 45 mph, and the infotainment system repeatedly asking whether the vehicle is a demo.

  • Engine25No crashes

Thermostat failure dominates, usually logged as code P0128 between 50,000 and 70,000 miles, with the temperature gauge stuck on cold and the steering assist warning. The part sits under the intake manifold, so labor is heavy, and repairs from about $600 to $1400 are reported. Some owners see the fault return within months. Radiator seam leaks show up at low mileage, one owner reports replacing the radiator three times, and another describes overheating and being stranded on the highway. Oil leaks from the camshaft housing gaskets and transmission seal leaks also recur.

  • Suspension31 crash

A front wheel can lock up and fold into the wheel well at speed, stopping the vehicle abruptly. In one report this caused a crash with an injury at 1,300 miles. A dealer diagnosis in a similar case found a seized control arm ball joint that snapped the axle shaft, with $1,850 in mechanical repairs plus $2,000 in body damage. A separate report describes a loud clunk on the driver side over bumps. Only 3 complaints fall under this category.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

The original Continental CrossContact LX Sport tires wear out early. Owners report tread near 2/32 at 18,000 miles and a wandering, unstable feel on dry roads at about 22,800 miles. Service departments describe the wear as unusual and recommend replacing all four tires. A voluntary Continental recall covered only certain mold dates, so most affected tires fall outside it. Owners also note the tires carry no treadlife warranty.

  • Airbags22 crashes

No deployment occurs in either of two serious crashes, both with injuries. One happened at about 50 mph. In the other, a semi-truck struck the SUV at about 65 mph, sending it spinning into the median after repeated driver-side impacts. Neither report includes a dealer finding on why the bags did not deploy. With only 2 complaints, no wider pattern is established, but both involve injured occupants.

In owners' own words

Transmission
A few months ago had Blazer in for oil change. That same day check engine light came on. Was told thermostat needed to be replaced. Needed to order part. Check engine light went out then steering maybe reduced just a week ago eventually check engine light came on. Took to dealership and thermostat needed to be replaced also radiator developed a leak. Just over 60000 miles

Transmission
On Saturday, March 8, 2025 I was crossing a busy intersection when my car shut off completely and accelerated into oncoming traffic almost causing a collision or fatality. My brakes locked and steering wheel locked. I had to put the emergency brake on in order for the car to come to a stop. We got out of the car in the middle of the street and ran for safety. Scariest experience I’ve ever been in especially with my family in the car!!

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Steering
"Steering Assist Reduced” warning message appears on dashboard display and temperature gauge stuck on cold on the dashboard display. I understand this such a common issue with the 2019 and 2020 Blazer that General Motors has issued Technical Service Bulletins but refuses to repair these vehicles for free. This is unacceptable! Issue a mandatory recall therefore GM must perform the repairs for free.

Steering
Value stem gasket covers need replacing oil spilling out everywhere it’s a 2020 should not be happening Oil leak Hot and cold temperature not working properly A warning flashing for the power steering being deceased and not use That car get moved every hour just about always in jt working or just taking a break The auto shut of makes transmission slip or sounds like it is

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Electrical
Shift to park message began appearing even after the shifter knob was in park. I cannot turn the vehicle off and it rolled backwards due to the vehicle not recognizing it was in park. This has now cost $700 to repair when its been a known issue with these vehicles for over 6 years and yet they refuse to issue a recall. This is dangerous and disgusting practice for a vehicle manufacturer to avoid keeping their customers safe.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Electrical
I got into my vehicle and it said “steering assist reduced. Drive with care”. the A/C stops working and refuses to cool as well as the cooled seats. The thermostat for the coolant reads “C” despite driving it 40+ miles in 83 degree weather. Tried disconnecting battery upon research and finding out many other people are having the same problem. The light turned off and came right back on the following morning

Engine
2020 Chevy blazer with 50,000 miles just had to have the thermostat housing replaced. Check engine light would everntually come on. But it would say "Steering assist reduced drive with care" When hooked up to the computer it read code P0128. I have the extended warranty and still had to pay over $600 to have this fixed which is completey ridiculous for how new and expensice this car is.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Engine
The thermostat failed on a trip locking in 0 temperature reading and steering assist warning. Licensed mechanic repaired on 10/9/25 invoice is available. 67,509 miles. This could risk overheating and destroying the engine and might cause accident. Two other friends have had similar issues, appears to be a safety defect!

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V115000Wheels and tiresFeb 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N212329050.

  2. 20V668000TransmissionOct 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick LaCrosse, 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019-2020 Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia, and 2020 Cadillac XT6 vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.

Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N202313440.

  3. 20V446000AirbagsJul 2020

General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5 and XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 and Traverse and GMC Acadia and Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The diffuser component of the Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) inflator may not have been properly crimped to the inflator and could separate from the inflator during air bag deployment.

Risk: If the diffuser separates from the inflator during deployment, RRAB performance may be degraded, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect RRAB modules, free of charge. The recall began September 3, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is N202305380.
