Which Grand Cherokee is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.6L 6-cylAWD, RWD21 mpg
5.7L 8-cylAWD17 mpg
6.2L 8-cylAWD13 mpg
6.4L 8-cylAWD15 mpg
  • The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Cherokee that averages well under the EPA 13 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical503 crashes

Sudden acceleration while pulling into parking spots is the most serious pattern, with brakes slow to respond and 3 reports ending in crashes. Other reports describe the engine shutting off while driving with a "place vehicle in park" message, and long cranking with no start that shops blame on the fuel pumps. Smaller patterns include seatbelt and airbag warning lights, the vehicle refusing to switch off, total headlight and brake light failure at night, and cruise control that keeps accelerating. Touchscreens delaminate, which disables GPS and SOS functions, and owners report long waits for replacement parts.

  • Transmission342 crashes

Transmission trouble dominates. Reports describe harsh or lunging shifts, slipping, dropping into neutral, and refusing to engage reverse or park. Several end in full replacement, at mileages from 14,500 to 88,000 and sometimes earlier. Stalls at stoplights come with an auto park message. 4WD service and stability control warnings point to transfer case or rear differential work. Two fires followed a loss of drive or a stall. Crash reports involve the vehicle surging in parking lots or hesitating during a turn, and one crash caused an injury.

  • Engine23No crashes

Camshaft and rocker arm wear on the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the most repeated failure. Symptoms are ticking, misfires, rough idle, and loss of power while passing, and some engines end up with metal debris and need replacement. Head gasket and coolant leaks with misfire codes show up around 115,000 miles. A cracked plastic oil housing can push oil into the coolant, and water pumps fail early. Repeat emissions check-engine lights also appear. One engine caught fire while parked, starting on the right side.

  • Steering131 crash

Electric power steering cuts out without warning, often with a "power steering unavailable" message. Drivers describe drifting into oncoming lanes during turns. One dealer replaced the whole steering gear for $5800 at roughly 28K miles because the module cannot be serviced separately. Other reports cover constant pulling to the right despite repeated alignments, very heavy steering with a rubbing sound, clunks from the front suspension, and a violent wobble during flat towing. In one crash the driver lost steering and the front end collapsed.

  • Airbags98 crashes

In most of these reports the airbags failed to deploy in serious crashes, including head-on, T-bone, and high-speed rear impacts. All 9 complaints involve injuries, among them concussions, rib and vertebrae fractures, and head injuries. Several vehicles were declared total losses with no deployment at all. One report describes only partial deployment after the vehicle had stopped. In another, every airbag fired at 70 mph with no impact and broke the driver's ribs.

  • Acceleration and cruise control74 crashes

Unintended acceleration at low speed is the core complaint. Vehicles surge while backing up or parking, and pressing the brake does not stop them. Four reports end in crashes, and some note that collision avoidance did not step in, including on a vehicle with 500 miles. A separate pattern involves the cruise control "+" button raising set speed in 5 mph jumps, in one case from 65 to 95 mph. Dealers told owners this works as designed.

  • Fuel system5No crashes

Cranking without starting is the main pattern. The engine usually catches on a second press of the start button, and dealers blame the fuel pumps, a costly repair that the existing recall does not cover for these vehicles. Refueling is another complaint: the pump nozzle keeps shutting off as if the tank were full, which leads to spills. Other reports cover a vehicle that would not shift or restart at 88 miles, and a water pump that leaked and was replaced 3 times in a year.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

The leather dashboard cover peels and lifts, held down only by the vents, at mileages from about 21,000 to 50,000. In one report the manufacturer called this a known defect with no recall or extended warranty. Side and rear hatch glass can shatter on its own with no prior damage. Interior door trim delaminates and breaks. One report describes the hood flexing at highway speed and popping open to the safety latch in strong wind.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Grand Cherokee owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Bought jeep in December 2020. Currently at 8000 miles. In October 2021, the vehicle would not turn off. The push button would go between ACC and Start but not in the off. Dealership has never seen this and after 8 days, are not able to definitively tell me what the issue is. The assumption has been given that the car is not recognizing that the vehicle is in Park. This is an assumption as whatever diagnosis that is being done is not finding the error.

Electrical
Transfer case had to be replaced. Service 4 wheel drive light came on along with traction control warning. Also, electronic stability control warning. Steering and movement were sluggish. Only had 51,000 miles in it. Not happy to have paid almost $1,400. for the repair. This should have been a recall because as I understand, many other owners have had the same exact issue. Please look into this. Thank you.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Transmission
At approximately 54,000 miles the transmission is not shifting. I parked in a parking spot, go into a store. Then come out and the vehicle will not shift into park or reverse. The check engine light came on for the park by wire issue. These transmissions have been known to have rough shifting and my vehicle has been no exception. It’s shifted rough at low speeds and the eco mode and auto start/stop system have also made it feel less than smooth to drive.

Transmission
While traveling Vehicle intermittent hard shifts, or no shifts, goes into neutral unexcitingly, sometimes no reverse. SES light on. 77,278 miles Dealer advised stored code - TCM P0733-00 Gear 3 Shift Incorrect Ratio. Dealer also advised vehicle needs Transmission replaced, Repair estimate $5970.28 Previous issues include ABS system repair and engine coil pack issue.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Engine
P0303 code. Misfire in cylinder 3. Blown head gasket. 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Car is only five years old with 115000 miles. Dealer suggested a new engine. A $12,000.00 expense to the consumer. $20,000.00 still owed to bank. After much research, it’s clear as day that this is an engineering flaw. Thousands of Pentastar engines have this recurring failure.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Engine
Water pump has failed at 61, 573 miles. Jeep issued a warranty extension for water pumps in the 2013-2017 models. It appears they have not corrected the defects in their water pumps.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

SteeringCrash reported
Lost control of steering which pushed vehicle to left and hit a retaining wall then to the right of the interstate. There were no warning lights. After vehicle stopped found front end had fallen off and left front tire was sitting on it's side.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Steering
Power Steering As I was making a right hand turn the red warning power steering icon flashed on the dash and I was unable to complete the right hand turn and proceeded to drift in to the oncoming traffic lane and ended up on the sidewalk facing the on coming traffic lane.
