Which Santa Fe is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 22–23 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 24–25 mpg |
- The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Santa Fe that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine38No crashes
Heavy oil burning is the dominant pattern. The low oil light flickers or flashes, and owners find the engine several quarts low between changes with no visible leak. It often shows up around 78,788 to 110,000 miles. Left unchecked, it brings shuddering, misfires, knocking, power loss, and stalling at highway speed, and some engines fail outright. Other reports describe oil drain plug leaks that seize the engine and a sudden high-rev surge while parked. Two complaints involve fires, one shortly after a valve cover gasket repair.
Electrical201 crash
Air conditioning stops blowing cold, which owners and mechanics tie to a failed evaporator temperature sensor covered by a service bulletin, reported at 30,000 and 59,000 miles. Horns quit early, sometimes traced to the airbag clockspring. Owners also report false forward collision braking, backup camera flicker or blue screens, batteries draining overnight, and sudden clusters of ADAS, ABS, and stability warnings. One report has the vehicle rolling while in park, and another describes a driver seat fire overnight that totaled the car.
Transmission18No crashes
Excessive oil use shows up again here, with one owner adding a quart every 300 miles. Many reports describe the vehicle not responding to the accelerator from a stop, or stalling at lights when auto stop is on, until it is shifted to park and restarted. Transmission complaints include rough shifts, shuddering, lockups, and dealers recommending full replacement. Other failures include repeat high-pressure fuel pump failure, engine seizure from an oil drain plug leak, and check engine codes dealers cannot resolve.
Wipers and visibility9No crashes
Sunroofs explode at highway speed with a loud bang, spraying glass into the cabin, with no object striking the car. Dealers often refuse to cover it under warranty. Several complaints involve recall campaign 21V00M000, where owners waited a long time because repair parts were not available, though none reported an actual failure. One wiper was eventually fixed with the proper glue. A separate report describes the air conditioning intermittently blowing warm, diagnosed as an evaporator temperature sensor failure.
Airbags42 crashes
Airbags fail to deploy in serious collisions, including a rear impact at about 60 mph. Both crash reports here involve injuries. The other pattern is a passenger airbag warning light that comes on while someone sits in the front passenger seat. One dealer traced this to a failed occupant detection module and seat mat, with a repair estimate of $2,800. Only a few complaints are on file for this category.
Brakes42 crashes
Pressing the brake does not stop the car in several reports. Drivers describe the vehicle surging forward while braking in a parking garage, which caused serious injury, and repeated failures to stop that led to two collisions. Other complaints describe a brake pedal that locks up at low speed and an electronic parking brake that engages by itself while driving or stopped, with warning lights that stay on. Two crashes and one injury appear in this category.
Fuel system41 crash
Hesitation and power loss on acceleration dominate these complaints, mostly from 2.0T owners. Symptoms include turbo lag when pulling into traffic, gasoline fumes in the cabin at low speed, and hard starts when cold. One dealer diagnosed a faulty fuel pump and high-pressure hoses at 49100 miles, quoted at over $1800. A separate report describes the vehicle accelerating into a garage while braking, plus the throttle cutting out on a freeway ramp. A failing catalytic converter is also mentioned.
Acceleration and cruise control32 crashes
Sudden acceleration while parking is the main complaint. Drivers report the engine roaring and the vehicle surging backward into a wall or forward through a building window, with braking unable to stop it. Both of those incidents ended in crashes. A third report describes cruise control abruptly slowing the car at about 75 mph on the interstate, with rapid beeping and no apparent cause. Only three complaints exist in this category.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Santa Fe owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The vehicles oil was changed on 3/22/23 at 22,395 miles. Almost 3 months and 1500 miles later when driving the engine seized. No lights came on. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership who said it is the fault of whoever did the last oil change as the drain plug came loose. After doing research it appears that this is a known issue with Hyundai. Also, fresh oil was all over the driveway which was not noticed when car was leaving the driveway.

My engine has been sucking up oil since the day I bought it. Once I hit 100k miles it started sucking up oil faster than the recommended oil changes. I was driving home two weeks ago. I went to get in a major highway and she would not go past 35 mph. I went to trade it in and was told it needs a new engine and a new turbo. This is a known problem and Hyundai will not fix it. This car is not even 4 years old. I got it in April 2021

The backup camera will sometimes have black lines and flash off/on while in reverse. Other times, it will display a solid blue screen and the camera doesn't show an image at all. I took it to the dealer and since they weren't able to replicate the problem, they didn't look at it. I showed them a video I recorded, but that wasn't good enough. It's happening more often and seems to mostly occur after the vehicle has been parked outside.

Frequent intermittent dash warning lights, no speed indicated, no tach indicated, cycles through warnings of safety systems malfunctioning. No lane departure, no adaptive cruise, no cruise, no forward collision warning, no blind spot warning. The disabling of these systems puts all drivers at risk. Dealership replaced front camera and windshield to fix this issue. Not fixed, continues to alarm at random times while driving.

2020 SantaFe Limited AWD with ~81200 miles. This is the 3rd or 4th time the P07410 code pops up with the Engine Check light. Hyundai said they found no issues and cleared the code, again. There was once when the code came up and it cleared itself after 50 miles. Not sure exactly what the cause is and Hyundai is saying "there is nothing wrong". Most recent occurrence Sept.4.2025.

High utilization of motor oil. Using 1 quart of oil every 300miles. Hyundai dealership (Gurnee Hyundai-Illinois) completed a "combustion system cleaning" but oil consumption continues unabated. Getting run-around from dealership and manufacturer. I am original owner. Care has 87K miles.

Moon roof suddenly shattered while on the highway, no other vehicles around, nothing was thrown or anything object found to hit the car, glass was thrown in vehicle, Had to slow down due to wind entering car, dealer was called and he declined to repair, said it was an insurance problem, adjuster will be out to inspect damage, there was no warning, only a loud boom then strong outside wind, until I slowed down and pulled over.

Where the 2020 fits in the Santa Fe's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the second model year of the Santa Fe's fourth generation (2019–2023).
Hyundai updated the Santa Fe for 2021, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2021 (not on a 2020)
- New platform introduced
- Updated design features
- Enhanced safety technology
