  • Engine 4

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Run the VIN for recall 23V172000 and confirm the repair was completed.
  • Accelerate from a full stop through several gears and reject any shudder, slipping, or sticking in first gear.
  • Ask for service records showing transmission replacement, valve body work, or long waits for parts.

2021 Blazer

104 owner complaints
  • Electrical 24
  • Brakes 16
  • Steering 14

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls and confirm the fuel pump control module recall repair is completed.
  • Inspect the radiator core and coolant reservoir for leaks, low coolant, or a sweet coolant smell; ask for radiator replacement records.
  • Drive 20 minutes and confirm the temperature gauge leaves cold, the A/C blows cold, and no steering assist warning appears.

2020 Blazer

178 owner complaints
  • Transmission 54
  • Steering 30
  • Electrical 27

Worth adding to your 2022 checks

  • Shift into park and shut off the engine several times. Walk away if a Shift to Park warning appears.
  • Once the engine is warm, confirm the temperature gauge has left cold and no Steering Assist Reduced message appears.
  • Run the air conditioning through the test drive. Warm air can point to the coolant temperature fault.

Which Blazer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD24–25 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD21–22 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Blazer that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Premature tire tread wear

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical8No crashes

The digital instrument cluster goes black while driving. That leaves no speedometer, turn signals, fuel gauge or warning lights, sometimes for hours. The dash can flicker with check engine and ABS lights on together, and one report says the brake pedal went to the floor. The driver information center freezes, the volume jumps to maximum, and the rear camera stays on. Other reports describe a stuck gas pedal and overheating with reduced engine power. In one fire report, the parked SUV burned after repeated dealer visits for electrical faults. Replacing modules often does not fix the problem.

  • Transmission6No crashes

The transmission fails suddenly, often at highway speed. Reports describe hard shifts, slipping, refusing to shift above 3rd gear, rpm climbing past 3500 without an upshift, and losing reverse. Repairs escalate from a valve body to a full transmission replacement. In one case the transmission failed again days after a dealer repair at 16K miles. A second pattern involves cooling. The fan runs after shutdown, the temperature sensor stops working, and the engine overheats and shuts itself off. Drivers describe nearly being rear-ended while limping to the shoulder.

  • Steering5No crashes

Power assist drops without warning. A "Steering Assist is Reduced" message appears and the wheel turns heavy and sluggish. Several reports link the warning to a thermostat or coolant temperature fault, with code P0128 and the cooling fan running after shutdown. It can start as early as 10k miles and keep coming back for years. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. A failed electronic power steering module and rack is diagnosed around 56,000 miles, with no warranty help. Another report pairs the warning with a brake system failure message after auto start/stop shuts off the engine.

  • Fuel system3No crashes

The engine shuts off or loses power while driving and may not restart. Shops diagnose a failed fuel pump control module with code P023F. One failure came at 45K miles, after the warranty had run out on mileage. Owners cite a GM bulletin covering stalling, no-start, loss of power and an erratic fuel gauge. They note that a related GM recall covers the 2021 Blazer but not the 2022. Separately, the accelerator sticks at highway speed or the engine revs while stopping to park, with no floor mat in the way.

  • Engine3No crashes

Sudden total loss of power while driving is the most serious report here. It is tied to fuel pump failure and left one car stranded partly in a highway lane. A thermostat stuck open keeps the temperature gauge on cool and runs the fan nonstop. It also triggers a reduced steering assist warning and the check engine light. One repair also required a new ECM. Coolant leaks show up too, including a radiator with a hole, followed by a transmission cooler line that failed and dumped fluid on the road.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

The factory tires wear out far too early. Reports describe all four tires worn close to the wear markers at 15,000 to 30,600 miles, despite regular rotations. Both the 235/65 R18 and 265/45 R21 sizes are affected. On the AWD Premier, the replacement Continental tires cost $370 each. Dealers noted the wear during service visits but did not tell the owners.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Blazer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Dashboard randomly goes black and does not work. This has happened one time while driving and I was unable to determine my speed since the speedometer is digital. I was also unable to see important information like service lights due to the faulty dashboard. Other times it happens right after I start the car in the garage. Also noticed when the dash goes black the climate control system starts to act weird and turns on and off randomly

Electrical
Accelerating without pressing gas pedal and gas pedal won't release with braking. Brakes overheated and this went on 10 minutes before I got it to release the gas pedal so I could safely stop. I almost hit 4 vehicles on the interstate because the gas pedal went to the floor all the sudden.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Transmission
My transmission started slipping really badly. Had never happened before, and then suddenly wouldn’t shift above 3rd gear. My reverse gear stopped working. I had to have my valve body replaced which fixed the drive gears but the reverse still didn’t work. After months without my car, my dealership had to replace the transmission.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Steering
Car is displaying a “Steering assist is reduced drive with caution” engine light is on and fan continues to run for 5-8 minutes after car is turned off. Was told by a mechanic it is a P0128 code, coolant thermostat. This is the third time it has happened in the last year. Other two times the codes cleared.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Steering
We were sold a new vehicle with known computer problems. The dealership knew of the defects but sold it to us anyway. They consider it a warranty issue. Chevrolet doesn’t seem to care.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021 Chevrolet Malibu, 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, Blazer and Cadillac XT4 vehicles. The driver's seat cushion frame may have an improper weld in the power tilt-adjustment mechanism.

Risk: An improperly welded seat frame may not adequately restrain the driver in a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the driver's seat and replace the cushion frame, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 23, 2022. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N212356050.
