Which Blazer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylFWD24 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD21–22 mpg
  • The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Blazer that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission531 crash

A "Shift to Park" message appears with the shifter already in Park, and the car will not fully shut off, lock, or stop chiming. Most reports here describe this fault, with onset anywhere from about 18,500 to 73,399 miles. Wiggling the shifter or cycling gears clears it at first, then works less often. Dealers usually replace the shifter assembly, and some owners see the fault return within two months. Thermostat failures also show up. One crash report describes the vehicle accelerating into a building after being placed in Park.

  • Electrical34No crashes

The same Shift to Park fault dominates, leaving the car stuck in accessory mode with doors that will not lock until the message clears. Several owners say repeat shop visits did not cure it. A second cluster involves a P0128 code with the temperature gauge stuck on cold, no air conditioning, and cooling fans running, sometimes unresolved after thermostat and sensor replacements. Scattered reports describe total power loss in heavy traffic, stalling and popping right after refueling, and a body control module that failed again after two dealer repairs.

  • Steering24No crashes

Most reports in this category describe a cooling-system fault, not a steering failure. A "Steering Assist Reduced, Drive with Care" message appears alongside a P0128 code, a temperature gauge stuck on cold, a cooling fan on high, and no A/C. Dealers diagnose a sticking thermostat or coolant temperature sensor, with repair costs reported at $700 and close to $1000. Onset clusters around 40,000 to 59,150 miles. More serious reports describe steering that intermittently locks up, brakes applying by themselves, and a highway loss of power steering and brake assist.

  • Engine8No crashes

A sticking thermostat is the main complaint, reported between about 30,000 and 59,945 miles. Symptoms include a dead temperature gauge, a recurring P0128 code, the A/C shutting off, and a steering assist warning. Owners say Chevrolet calls it a known issue, and some cars are out of warranty when it fails. Single reports also cover a failed starter and cracked flex plate that stranded a car at a red light, a leaking radiator, and a sudden loss of power that returned right after an injector replacement.

  • Brakes62 crashes

The brake pedal can turn hard without warning, leaving little stopping power. Both crash reports involve brake failure: one car ran a stop sign into a drainage ditch with an injury, and another rolled into a stopped semi after a mechanic-confirmed brake booster failure. Other owners describe brakes locking up at low speed on dirt roads and at a stoplight, and a stall at 30 mph with reduced engine power and service parking brake warnings. Two reports filed here actually describe the Shift to Park fault.

  • Airbags31 crash

No air bags deployed in one crash report, even though another vehicle traveling at 50 mph or more struck the front quarter panel and the driver's head hit the side window. The opposite problem also appears, with both right and left air bags firing during a skid on black ice with no impact. A third owner describes an air bag service warning that comes and goes, more often in hot or cold weather, which the dealer could not diagnose after repeated visits. With only 3 complaints on file, no clear pattern is established.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Adaptive cruise control shuts off on its own, beeping and showing a temporarily unavailable message. In one case it kept failing after a front camera replacement and a software update. Separately, the engine can rev and the car jerk forward while slowing with a foot on the brake, and the dealer found no fault. Only 2 complaints are on file, so neither pattern is well established.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

Factory tires draw two isolated complaints. One describes fast tread wear and a rear end that slid around corners, which the owner linked to a GM service bulletin on the original Michelin tires. An alignment fixed the sliding, but new tires were needed early. The other involves a Continental CrossContact LX Sport tire slowly losing air, which the owner tied to a federal tire recall campaign. The tire was replaced.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Blazer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
2019 Blazer with 73,399 miles is in Park, but displays "Shift to Park". System does not recognize that the vehicle is in Park. Vehicle will not turn off even after shifting transmission to drive and then to Park again. "Shift to Park" message won't reset. Dealership said it's $1,642 to fix issue. Afraid to drive the vehicle because it won't shut off, can't be locked, and will run out of gas/battery if "Shift to Park" displayed message can't be reset/fixed.

Transmission
2019 Chevy Blazer RS - 39,217 miles and shifter assembly is malfunctioning and will not allow car to turn off properly and leaving lights, beeping and miscellaneous dash indicators on. This is a known issue with Chevy.

Electrical
I am currently receiving a shift to park message displayed while my vehicle has been put in park and after I turn the vehicle off. While the message is displayed, the doors will not lock and a bell will not stop dinging, notifying me of the error. I have to start the vehicle, shift into gear, shift into park, and turn off several times before the error disappears. I have an appointment to have the dealer look at it this week.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Electrical
Shift To Park message displays while vehicle is already in Park! Incident began increasing in frequency in late 2022 . Vehicle would not Shut Off! Bulletin on problem came out in 2019, Chevy did not inform me of this Safety issue , Grandchildren in vehicle at least 2 times . Chevy charged me for the fix , Chevy was aware of problem before warranty expired !

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Steering
Nothing necessarily happened, but I've been getting the "steering assist reduced, drive with care" pop up, which assist I've been reading might mean a faulty thermostat. Sounds like a common issue and may e time for a recall? Only 60k miles on my blazer.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Steering
Temp gauge intermittently reads cold, no ac and engine cooling fan constantly blowing, dash warning re power steering, 40,000 miles, code po128, review of google indicates this is a common problem and likely needs a new thermostat and ect

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Engine
Coolant Thermostat needs replaced at 59945 miles. The temperature gauge stopped working and the A/C unit shut off. The temperature outside created a safety issue for my family and I to ride in the car. The engine light came on and a message that stated the Steering Assist was effected. This should not happen in a car under 60000 miles.

Where the 2019 fits in the Blazer's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the first model year of the Blazer's third generation (2019–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V115000Wheels and tiresFeb 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

Risk: Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N212329050.

  2. 20V668000TransmissionOct 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick LaCrosse, 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019-2020 Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia, and 2020 Cadillac XT6 vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.

Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006.
