A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2020 Tesla Model Y. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Your inspection sheet

Tick items off on your phone at the car, or print it. Ticks stay on this device.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Model Y is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Tesla Model Y. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD316 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 316 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Front control arm and link wear

    37,876–39,000 miles

  • Battery range loss

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Tesla Model Y, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Automatic emergency braking535 crashes

The car brakes hard for no visible reason on open highway with cruise control or Autopilot engaged. It often sheds 5 to 10 mph and forces following traffic to swerve. A second pattern follows software updates. Cameras, navigation, cruise control, collision warning and self-driving features all stop working, and service blames the main vehicle computer, quoting roughly $2,300 to replace it. Some reports describe abrupt lane departures and spins on wet highways with Autopilot on. Of 53 complaints, 5 involve crashes.

  • Acceleration and cruise control277 crashes

Sudden acceleration during low-speed parking is the most serious pattern. Cars jump curbs and hit walls, vehicles or homes while the driver reports pressing the brake, and several were nearly new. Tesla told at least one driver they pressed the wrong pedal. The other common report is phantom braking at highway speed on cruise control, which sometimes nearly causes a rear-end collision. Camera faults can also quietly degrade cruise control, and service has linked this to the HW3 autopilot computer. Seven of 27 complaints involve crashes, with 4 injuries.

  • Steering254 crashes

Front suspension links and control arms wear out. It starts with creaking, clicking or rattling when turning, and repairs often repeat. Owner-paid fixes run several hundred dollars, and one case matches recall 21V-835 for the front lower lateral links. Reports that give a mileage put the onset at roughly 37,876 to 39,000 miles. A separate pattern is sudden loss of power steering assist, often after a "Steering assist reduced" warning, which ends with the steering rack replaced. Some drivers say the wheel locked or stuck. Four of 25 complaints involve crashes.

  • Electrical203 crashes

Battery range falls well below the rated 316 miles. Some owners see around 180 miles on a full charge at higher mileage. The charging module (PCS) can fail and block Level 2 charging. The center screen crashes and reboots, taking the backup camera and gear display with it. Dashcam and Sentry Mode stop working after updates. Some cars shut down while driving, traced to a failed drive inverter or a damaged main wiring harness. A dead 12-volt battery can trap a child in the rear seat without warning.

  • Brakes181 crash

Phantom braking dominates. The car brakes hard at highway speed with nothing ahead while on cruise control, Autopilot or FSD, and some owners say software updates made it worse. In one sudden stop a pet was hurt. Other reports include leaking rear brake hoses, a missing caliper nut, and warnings that ABS and emergency braking are disabled. Several cars spun on wet roads when lifting off the accelerator triggered regenerative braking. One of 18 complaints involves a crash, with 4 injuries.

  • Suspension172 crashes

Front control arms, lateral links and bushings tear or wear early. The warning signs are clicking, creaking or groaning while turning. Loose or missing rear suspension bolts cause pulling, rear shimmy and fast tire wear. Several reports describe a wheel separating from the car or a cracked hub. Tesla often blames potholes or driving habits, and some owners say the 2021 recall skipped their car. Many excerpts are junkyard listings from one repeat filer who substitutes VINs, so they say little about any specific car. Two of 17 complaints involve crashes.

  • Airbags169 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes, including a head-on collision and impacts with medians and buildings. Occupants report fractures and head injuries. The other common pattern is a recurring front passenger restraint fault, code RCM2_A636, that turns off the passenger airbag. Fixes range from a sensor swap to a full seat cushion replacement. Out of warranty, quotes run $1,100 to $2,000, and the fault often comes back. Nine of 16 complaints involve crashes, with 8 injuries.

  • Body and structure125 crashes

Rear doors jam shut when an inner door panel slips loose and wedges against the body seal. Technicians call this a frequent repair. Once it happens, the door will not open from inside or out. The rear manual release is hidden behind a cover and requires prying panels or using a tool, which is a concern for children. Sudden acceleration while parking nearly new cars also shows up here, along with a power liftgate that closes on fingers. Five of 12 complaints involve crashes.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Model Y owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Automatic emergency braking
Under clear conditions while traveling on the highway, if adaptive cruise control or self-driving is used, the car will randomly apply its brakes. The car will quickly lose 5-10 miles of speed, and poses a hazard to cars behind us. In the 7-8 times this has happened in the last two months, there has never been an obstacle in our path. Unfortunately, this has rendered cruise control unusable

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Automatic emergency braking
Driving on Highway 80, west of Elko, NV. No obstructions on the road, no cars within 5 miles, no animals or birds on the highway. The vehicle aggressively brakes. It did this 4 times with the assisted driving engaged and 1 with cruise control engaged.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Acceleration and cruise control
While driving on the highway at 59 mph using Tesla Autopilot functionality the vehicle braked so hard the wheels locked up and skidded without warning. There was no vehicle directly in front but there were two semi trucks on either side and vehicle directly behind me. The vehicle behind had to brake hard not to run into me. I took control of the vehicle and pressed the accelerator to regain speed and avoid an collision.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2023

Acceleration and cruise control
While driving on highway using cruise control, the vehicle (without the driver's assistance) applied brakes to quickly slow the rate of speed. This occurred three times in the span of ten minutes. The weather was sunny and no other vehicles or objects were in the vicinity of my vehicle. After the third occurrence, I stopped using cruise control for the remainder of the trip.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2022

Steering
When driving over 45 miles approximately the steering becomes sticky and hard to move. Feels like a bump in the rack and pinion and then it jerks which would cause a car to hit other vehicles or be out of control.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

SteeringCrash reported
While driving on the freeway was unable to steer. It has happens multiple times. Once on the freeway while I was trying to exit, I suddenly couldn’t steer. Another time, I was merging when again I could not move the steering wheel. The third time was when I was in the middle of making a left turn. All these situations were incredibly dangerous.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

ElectricalCrash reported
The system crashed and It said car was forward mode when the gear stock was stuck in reverse and I went ahead and banged behind car when removing car from parking instead of going forward .

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Electrical
Heating / defrosting unit failed. While driving to work in 1 degree freezing weather my heating / defrosting unit would not provide a clear fog free windshield so i could safely see outside. Dealer has me scheduled for a date for repair but this is the second time this has happened. First time 9/2021 and now 1/2022. No inspection has happened yet. Warning message displayed saying that the climate control has failed.

Where the 2020 fits in the Model Y's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Model Y's first generation (2020–2025). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Tesla fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Tesla updated the Model Y for 2025, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2020)

  • Full-width light bar as daytime running lights and tail light
  • Touchscreen for rear passengers
  • Sleeker front design
  • Redesigned wheels and rear diffuser

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
