Which Tucson is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Hyundai Tucson. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–25 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–25 mpg |
- The 2020 Hyundai Tucson was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tucson that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

Engine43No crashes
Oil disappears between changes, often a quart every 1,000 miles or worse, with some cars running the dipstick dry. Consumption usually shows up around 70,000 to 85,000 miles. A brief low-oil light that flickers in turns or hard braking is often the only warning. Catalytic converters clog and get replaced, sometimes twice. Several engines fail outright, with power loss, lurching, and a full shutdown at highway speed. Dealers typically run a 1,000-mile oil test and a carbon cleaning before considering a new engine.
Brakes33No crashes
Most of these filings concern recall 20V543000, which covers an ABS electrical short that can start a fire even when the car is parked. Owners were told to park away from buildings, then waited weeks or months because dealers had no parts. Separate reports describe the emergency braking system blocking the car from moving when a door or seat belt is not latched, rear brake lights cutting out on and off, and a brake pedal that drops to the floor without slowing the car.
Electrical15No crashes
Engines stall, sputter, or shut off while driving, sometimes around 70,000 miles, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. A cluster of warnings for ABS, auto hold, lane keeping, blind spot, and forward collision can light up at once and stay on. Misfires and limp mode with code P1326 persist after parts are swapped. Brake lights stick on with the headlights. Cars without an engine immobilizer get stolen, and some insurers refuse coverage. Many early filings complain about waiting for ABS fire recall parts.
Transmission61 crash
A flashing check engine light and sudden limp mode are the main complaint, sometimes while merging onto a freeway. Code P1326 ties to engine bearing failure that needs a full engine replacement. Catalytic converter failure with code P0420 appears as early as 19k miles and can return. Low-mileage cars also lurch while stopped in drive or stall briefly under throttle, and dealers cannot find a cause. One crash report with injuries describes a car stuck in drive and airbags that did not deploy.
Airbags51 crash
The airbag warning light comes on intermittently, stays lit for a few minutes, and then goes out. It returns even after a dealer clears codes or replaces the unit under the passenger seat, around 50,000 miles in one report. One owner paid $175 for a reset that lasted only a few hours. The most serious filing describes a head-on crash where the airbag did not deploy and the driver was injured.
Lane keeping4No crashes
The forward camera stops working without any impact, which sets off lane keeping and forward collision warnings together. Out of warranty, dealers quote roughly $1586 to $1700 to replace it, and one repair order lists a software error. The blind spot system can also shut itself off partway through a drive, and dealers have not found the cause. The sudden alarms can startle a driver into pulling over.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Rear brake lights fail repeatedly and trigger a Check Brake Light message. Replacement bulbs, including genuine Hyundai bulbs, fail again soon after. One mechanic found a melted brake light housing, and the problem continued after it was replaced at about 100,000 miles. Other cars have a brake light that stays on when the pedal is not pressed, which confuses drivers behind.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
The forward collision system triggers on the highway with nothing ahead. It sounds a loud alarm and brakes the car hard, which risks a rear-end crash. Dealers often find nothing, and in one case the needed sensor was on backorder. Cruise control can also fail to resume after braking, so the car slows and will not respond to the gas pedal.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tucson owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
On 8/7/2024 the engine light came on and stayed on. I took the car to my service pro and he did a pcm scan. Error code displayed a catylitic problem on bank 1. This is the secind time this has happened to this vehicle. First time was 2/13/2023, Mileage was 52000 miles. Salem Hyundai replaced the Cat with a new one. On 8/8/2024 I called Salem NH Hyundai to report the issue and have an appt for 8/14/2024. Milage on vehicle is 77181.

This engine has 70,000 miles on it and has burned a quart of oil every 2500 to 3000 miles, two full quarts between oil changes. In talking to others Hyundai owners, they have similar issues. I have owned multiple other brands of vehicles with well over 150K miles and they did not burn any oil. Fords, BMWs, Volvos, and Subarus.

Electrical rear brake system. My rear driver side brake like sometimes fails to operate properly. Brake warning light on dash comes on. This happens on and off. After researching the issue I found numerous owners are having the same issue. Some replace the bulb multiple times while others have had dealerships replace the harness. Both solutions only temporarily fixed the problem for a short time

While driving one evening, it was brought to my attention that my passenger brake light was remaining on, when I was not braking. A week later, both sides are on. This happens only if my headlights are on - automatically or if I manually turn my headlights on. The back center light will only come on when I high the brake pedals. Again, back brake lights on driver and passenger side remain on regardless of brake pedal is engaged.

Had for a year. 6 months ago, started sputtering, surging, slowing and dying on a regular basis. Have had it shop at Chapman used in Tucson, AZ and Lawley Hyundai in Sierra Vista Arizona 3 times. Chaan couldn't repair, so we went to Lawley. The mechanism there keep saying they cannot reproduce! The engine malfunctions 3-4 time during any drive we do. Has been going on for 6 months.

Recalls to confirm (1)
Recall repairs are free at any Hyundai dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.
Risk: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.
