One recall on this model year told owners to stop driving, and one more to park outside, until the repair was done.

Do not buy until you have dealer paperwork or a recall lookup showing they were completed for this VIN.

Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2020 BMW X3. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which X3 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, RWD26–27 mpg
3.0L 6-cylGasAWD23 mpg
2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybridAWD340 mi range
  • The 2020 BMW X3 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical252 crashes

A fire risk recall, 25V636, makes up most of these complaints. Owners describe a fire risk even with the car parked and the ignition off, and say dealers had no parts for months. Some cars outside the recall show hard starting, with repeated button presses needed or a shorting starter. Other reports cite a restraint warning traced to knee airbag wiring, a failed emergency call module, and water damage from a missing shark fin cover. Two crash reports describe brake and accelerator pedals that stopped responding at parking lot speeds.

  • Transmission12No crashes

The rear differential mounting bolt shears off at the head. Drivers hear a loud pop or thump, and some notice clunking for a while beforehand when shifting into drive or reverse. No warning light comes on. With the bolt gone, the differential can shift out of line and damage the driveshaft, transfer case, and exhaust, sometimes leaving the car undriveable. Failures cluster around 25,000 to 36,000 miles. Owners put a full differential replacement near $5000 outside warranty. Fewer reports cite a drivetrain malfunction message tied to the heat management module, or idle speed surging at stoplights.

  • Engine10No crashes

Three reports describe parked, unattended cars catching fire around the engine. All happened at low mileage and ended in total losses, and in one case a neighboring car burned too. Failed grille and lower radiator air shutters are a more common complaint. They bring on a check engine light, and owners link them to overheating. A failed heat management module or thermostat also causes overheating and drivetrain warnings. Other reports cite a variable oil pump with a plastic ring, plus hybrid models with recurring check engine lights and long shop stays after battery recalls.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Most of these complaints are about an open structure recall and missing parts, not actual failures. Owners say the recall was announced in July 2024 and months later dealers still had no remedy, and the online VIN tool confirmed parts were unavailable. None of these owners reported a failure. One separate report describes the sunroof glass blowing out at freeway speed with no impact or debris, which matches the sunroof complaints filed in other categories.

  • Airbags5No crashes

A passenger restraint malfunction warning keeps coming back. When it is active, the passenger side airbags may not deploy in a crash. Dealers have replaced the occupancy sensor, reseated connectors, or blamed the knee airbag wiring harness, and one owner reports a parts shortage. Warnings show up anywhere from the first few thousand miles to 70,000. Owners outside warranty report repair quotes as high as $3800. In one report, the seat sensor failed to detect a passenger.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The car brakes hard by itself with nothing in the road. One driver reports the opposite problem: while slowing for a red light at 35 mph, the brakes stopped working and the engine revved high on its own, and the car nearly hit the vehicle ahead. The collision prevention system did not step in, and the problem could not be reproduced afterward. Neither report mentions a crash.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

The rearview camera shows a black screen or a distorted picture in reverse. Distortion shows up mostly at night or in bad weather, and no warning light comes on. Reported failures came at about 21,000 and 50,000 miles. Owners pointed to earlier camera recalls, but dealers and the manufacturer said these VINs were not included, and neither car was diagnosed or repaired.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Despite the category name, these complaints are about the screens inside the car. In daylight, the dashboard and infotainment display dim almost to black at random, which hides the speedometer and makes the radio and phone controls hard to use. Opening the driver window brightens them again. One owner says dealers have repeatedly said there is no fix. Another complaint says the white-on-black screens glare and are hard to read for drivers with some eye conditions.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Received warning on screen. “Driver restraint system malfunction carefully drive to the closest service center driver restraint system is reduced. Increased risk of injury in case of collision. Continue using safety belt.” I took the car in, and this was the diagnosis: “Driver restraint system malfunction. Passenger knee airbag rewired to control module” 24,122 miles on the car. $1400

Filed with NHTSA, December 2023

Electrical
I have records of over 900 other consumers including myself that have been asking BMW to fix a potential deadly lighting malfunction that leaves you with no dash lighting or a whiteout. This problem effects all the dash and HVAC controls where you can't see any the dash and safety components. I've reached out to BMW and they refuse to acknowledge the problem and have asked me to stop.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
Consistently breaking differential bolt that hold the rear differential in place, very widespread issue as well as being consistently noted in forums. Also a high number of differential completely failing across all years. Mine failed recently, two other vehicles at the same dealership had a broken differential. There needs to be a recall on both of these issues.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Transmission
The differential mounting bolt will fail causing your differential to fall which breaks your driveshaft your transfer case and your exhaust system. This has been reported in well over 100 cars there is no warning light if driving at interstate speeds and this happens it could be catastrophic.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Engine
I purchased the vehicle used on December 2, 2023. The vehicle randomly and intermittently exhibits a check engine light in normal driving conditions. The vehicle was inspected prior to sale, and engine oil was replaced prior to sale. The check engine light turns on and off sporadically but seems to turn on when the vehicle switches from electric to combustion engine.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2024

Engine
The lower radiator blinds/air flaps are not working. I have a check engine light on and the dealership is stating that is what is wrong. This is a known issue with BMW vehicles and has been a recall with other BMW models.

Where the 2020 fits in the X3's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the third model year of the X3's third generation (2018–2024).

BMW updated the X3 for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • Updated headlights and taillights
  • New bumper designs
  • 12.3-inch infotainment system available
