Which Terrain is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 GMC Terrain. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 26–27 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
- The 2020 GMC Terrain was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Terrain that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Brake vacuum pump failure
37,000–71,000 miles
Fuel pump module stall
42,000–88,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 GMC Terrain, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Brakes454 crashes
Brake assist disappears without warning, leaving a rock-hard pedal that takes both feet or full body weight to stop. A Service Brake Assist message, a check engine light, or a ticking noise sometimes comes first, but many failures arrive with no warning at highway speed. Four complaints involve crashes. Dealers most often blame the brake vacuum pump, and some owners also have the booster, booster sensor, or vacuum pipe replaced, sometimes more than once. Failures cluster between about 37,000 and 71,000 miles. In several cases the pump breaks at the camshaft and ruins the engine.
Transmission23No crashes
Hesitation from a stop is the most common report. The pedal goes to the floor, nothing happens for several seconds, and then the car lurches forward, often while pulling into traffic. Dealers often find no code. Other complaints describe vacuum pump failures that break the timing chains, full engine rebuilds or replacements, heavy oil burning with misfires, and reduced power linked to the intercooler. Some owners also report a front-end wobble or clicking under throttle and the transmission dropping into neutral or park while moving. Several say recalls on similar GM vehicles leave out their VIN.
Electrical19No crashes
Infotainment glitches lead this category. Screens go black, the radio jumps to full volume, and Bluetooth and USB connections drop. Backup cameras fail to a blue screen, sometimes even after the camera is replaced. More serious reports describe the car shutting down at intersections, shifting into park at speed with the steering locked, and an anti-theft fault that blanks every gauge on the interstate. Repeated Service Brake Assist warnings with a stiff pedal also show up here. Auto Stop draws complaints because it cannot be switched off and delays pulling away.
Engine13No crashes
Sudden engine destruction is the main theme. The vacuum pump seizes or a camshaft end cap comes loose, the cam skips timing, and the engine is ruined, sometimes at highway speed with no prior warning. Other reports describe oil loss requiring a new engine while still under warranty, metal shavings inside the engine, and shaking with a flashing check engine light. A second pattern is turbo underboost code P0299, with power loss in cold or foggy weather traced to moisture in the charge air cooler. Fuel pump module stalls and hesitation from a stop also appear.
Fuel system11No crashes
The engine stalls without warning and will not restart, most often because the fuel pump control module has failed. Stalls happen in traffic, and one stranded car could not be shifted into neutral to be pushed aside. A battery saver message or code P129F can accompany the failure, and one owner paid $850 for the module. Some owners say a federal notice covers this failure but their VIN is excluded. Other reports describe the throttle going dead from a stop and a tank that takes only a few gallons while the gauge reads full.
The car stalls or refuses to restart, and the cause is traced to the fuel pump or fuel pump control module. Messages such as Low Battery or Start the Vehicle often appear afterward. Some cars lose power while moving with the check engine light on, and others fail to start after refueling. Most reported failures fall between about 42,000 and 45,175 miles, with one at 88,000. Every case ends with a tow. One owner links the failure to a fuel system recall that does not include their VIN.
Acceleration and cruise control8No crashes
Stalling or power loss on acceleration, mostly after a stop, is the core problem, and owners describe near misses at intersections. Without a stored code, dealers often cannot find the fault and keep cars for weeks. Other reports describe the car slowing on the highway with the check engine and traction lights on, one ending in an engine rebuild at about 25,000 miles. Adaptive cruise shuts off on its own, and one owner reports the cruise setting itself far too high. A hard brake pedal on the highway accounts for the 2 injuries listed.
Automatic emergency braking31 crash
Automatic emergency braking fails in both directions. In one crash report, it did not engage before a collision. Another car applies its brakes on its own and shows hill descent messages on level ground, with under 4100 miles on the clock. A third report says none of the safety features have ever worked. The risk runs both ways: the system can fail to brake when a car is ahead and can also brake when nothing is there.
Wipers and visibility2No crashes
Water comes in through the sunroof drains, soaking the carpets and pooling in the spare tire well. In one case mold grew inside the cabin, and the owner reports a respiratory illness, which is the single injury listed. Dealers unclog the drains, replace the carpets, and swap sunroof parts, but the leak comes back. The other complaint describes the rear camera failing with a Service Rear Camera System message at about 53,500 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Terrain owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The brake system failed. No warning. When the brakes failed, driver ran the car into a tree to stop instead of hitting pedestrians or other vehicles
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
Brake booster failed with no warning. Brake pad was hard to push down as I exited the freeway. I came close to hitting the vehicle in front of me which would have resulted in a bad car accident. There were no warning. This is extremely dangerous and is a risk to not only the driver but also to vehicles in the path of a vehicle that cannot stop. This needs to be a recall along with the other vehicles that have a recall for this part.

The vehicle is a 2020 and should not already be having electrical issues. The vehicle repair is over 5k for needing a starter motor, water pump and drive belt. A starter should last up to 100k miles and water pump should last 10 years not 4. This vehicle is a lemon and should not have so many issues.

Driving down the road at 40mph when the car shifts to park, the brake and steering wheel lock up and the car won’t accelerate. I had to pull over because I almost crashed due to the abrupt shift. Once pulled over I tried to restart the car but once off and back on it wouldn’t allow me to shift or drive it. The steering wheel and brake remained locked. It has happened several times over the past week.

Where the 2020 fits in the Terrain's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the third model year of the Terrain's second generation (2018–2024).
GMC updated the Terrain for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)
- Updated front and rear end
- Exterior LED lamps
- New trim levels including AT4
- Discontinuation of low-end SL trim
Recalls to confirm (2)
Recall repairs are free at any GMC dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
23V339000Child SeatMay 2023
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles. The four rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have excessive powder coating, which could prevent a child seat from being installed with the anchorage bars. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems.".
Risk: The inability to install a child seat with the LATCH anchorage bars could result in an unsecured child seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Fix: Owners are advised to install child seats using the vehicle's rear seat belts until the remedy is complete. Dealers will inspect the latch anchorage bars, and remove and replace the finish, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 2, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N232403240.
20V668000TransmissionOct 2020
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick LaCrosse, 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019-2020 Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia, and 2020 Cadillac XT6 vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.
Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N202313440.
