Which GLC is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGas4WD, RWD24 mpg
2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid4WD360 mi range
  • The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GLC that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine17No crashes

Cylinder head failure is the dominant problem. It shows up as a misfire, rough idle, shaking at stoplights, and a lit check engine light. Several reports describe sudden power loss or stalling in traffic. Dealers diagnose valve seat damage, valve leakage, or a cracked head and replace the cylinder head, usually between 40,000 and 57,500 miles. Many owners first get spark plugs or coils replaced before the real cause is found. Smaller groups of complaints involve oil pump failures with an oil leak warning and a repeat emissions failure tied to a faulty canister.

  • Electrical10No crashes

Two reports describe fires after a coolant warning told the driver to shut off the engine, one involving a plug-in hybrid. Stalling is the other serious pattern. Cars shut off while driving, sometimes on a freeway, with a 12-volt battery warning or an ignition fault, around 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Owners also describe sudden loss of speed at highway pace and start/stop failing to restart the engine. Several complaints concern a backup camera recall delayed by missing parts or an over-the-air update that never came, plus a center screen that fails and takes the rear camera with it.

  • Steering51 crash

Reports here are scattered rather than one dominant fault. The power steering column adjustment can stop working and leave the wheel stuck in an awkward position. Some owners describe steering wheel and seat vibration from new, which dealers blame on tires, and front tires wearing heavily on the outer edge, replaced several times without a fix. Others report a persistent squeak from the suspension. With the Distronic driver assistance system on, the car can wander within the lane on gentle highway curves and drift toward lane markings unless the driver steers.

  • Automatic emergency braking41 crash

Unexpected braking and power loss are the main concerns. One report describes a total loss of power on a freeway with no warning, leading to a rear-end crash with 3 injuries. Another describes hard automatic braking at about 35 mph under the shadow of an overpass, repeated at the same spot. The radar cruise control is reported to brake too late in stop-and-go traffic after a dealer service visit. A separate complaint involves an airbag system warning caused by a faulty right-side crash sensor.

  • Backup camera4No crashes

The rearview camera shows a blank screen or a mirror-reversed image when the car is put in reverse, often right after startup. Owners link these failures to two federal recall campaigns, but some find their VIN is not included. Others say the fix for the infotainment system, which can stay black or reboot and drop the camera image, was promised over the air and still had not arrived more than a year later. One dealer quoted $6000 to repair a screen that would not come on.

  • Exterior lights4No crashes

Water gets inside the headlight housing, often after rain, and condensation builds until the whole assembly fails. When it goes, the headlight, turn signal, and parking light on that side all stop working, sometimes with no prior warning. Failures appear around 65,000 miles, and one owner reports the problem returned after a warranty replacement. Replacement is costly, quoted at over $2500 from independent shops and over $3300 from dealers. The loss of a turn signal and night lighting is the main safety concern.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Hesitation and power loss at low speed lead the complaints. Owners describe the car failing to respond to the throttle for up to 4-5 seconds when pulling into traffic or making a sharp turn, and in some cases acting as if it slipped into neutral until restarted. One GLC63 report describes a transmission overheat warning and the car locking in first gear at highway speed. A whining rear differential needing replacement around 61,198 miles is also reported, at a cost near $9,088.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

After stopping, often while waiting to turn, the car refuses to accelerate beyond a crawl even with the pedal pressed, leaving the driver stuck in an intersection or in front of traffic. Turning the car off and on usually restores power. One report, at approximately 800 miles, was traced to electronic throttle control software that the dealer could not replace. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Owners describe near misses with oncoming traffic and trucks.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints GLC owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
The check engine light illuminated, I took the car to the dealer I bought. They said the cylinder head on the engine needs to be replaced, when I check the internet it seems it is a known issue for Mercedes X253 but there is not a recall program. I bought the car from the dealer, and put on 5k miles in a year.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Engine
Engine began unpredictably running rough. Would lose ability to accelerate, in traffic. Engine light came on. Originally took to dealership, computer indicated a “misfire cylinder 2” was told by mechanic at dealership it was possibly “bad gas” and they cleared all codes. Continued to get worse. Took vehicle to a licensed “Mercedes Doctor” mechanic who had to replace cylinder head to correct. Vehicle is now running better than new!

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Electrical
Center COMAND screen malfunctions. No rear camera view when reversing when screen does not work. Dealer attempted a repair but issue remains. Parts ordered for replacement.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

SteeringCrash reported
the power steering wheel adjustment stopped working, leaving the steering wheel stuck in a very unconfutable position for driving. The car just ended its 4 yr warranty

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Steering
There is a squeaky noise from the suspension, shock absorbers or somewhere in that area. They have fixed the issue multiple times. Kept my car in the workshop for days multiple times but it’s not getting fixed. They probably sold me a lemon. I need help in rectifying this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Automatic emergency braking
SRS malfunction warning displayed on vehicles dashboard. Vehicle was diagnosed and displayed code B009749 Indicating: the crash sensor on the right hand side has a malfunction. There is an internal electrical fault.
