  • The 2021 BMW 3 Series was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 BMW 3 Series, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical6No crashes

A starter-related recall, campaign 25V636000, dominates these reports, and dealers often have no parts to complete the repair. Several owners have not seen a failure yet. Others describe hard morning starts, auto start-stop failing to restart the engine at a light, a false "Engine Unable to Start" message while driving, and rough idling at about 33,672 miles. One car caught fire while being driven, with smoke coming from under the hood. A separate report covers a passenger restraint warning that the dealer suspects comes from a wiring short.

  • Airbags21 crash

Restraint system warnings appear on the screen even though the car has never been damaged. The message says airbag, seatbelt tensioner, and belt force limiter functions are reduced. The other report is a parking lot crash in which the driver says the car did not brake and instead accelerated into another vehicle and a barrier before the airbags deployed. That crash caused 1 injury and totaled the car.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The car stalls when pulling away from a light while running in all-electric mode, then jolts forward hard as the gears catch. The owner suspects the transmission slipped and later found a shoulder injury. The other complaint involves rodents chewing through engine wiring, which the dealer confirmed. That damage reduced engine power and turned on the engine service light, and broken circuits can also knock out lights and wipers. The two reports do not point to a shared defect.

  • Engine2No crashes

Motor mounts fail early, with one failure reported at 52k miles on a car bought as certified pre-owned. Until the mounts are replaced, the car is unsafe to drive. The other complaint concerns the engine starter recall, campaign 25V-636. Neither the manufacturer nor the dealer has a remedy for it or a reasonable timeframe for the repair, so owners are left waiting.

  • Suspension2No crashes

Failed engine mounts show up here too. In one case they were found during routine service at 43,000 miles, just after the warranty ran out, with a $3000 quote and a warning that the car was dangerous to drive. A separate report describes a car that keeps going out of alignment, with the owner suspecting the front axle support and a control arm bracket are separating. Repeated alignments have not fixed it, and the tires wear quickly.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 3 Series owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My BMW 330i 2021 caught on fire while I was driving. Smoke came from the hood, and I open the hood and seen the Fire, and I called the Newark NJ Fire Department. see attached photo of the BMW after the fire.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

AirbagsCrash reported
Going into a parking spot. Applied brakes, then the car did not brake, then it accelerated hitting a Jeep and finally stopped when the driver side front hit a parking barrier and then the air bags deployed. Sudden unintended acceleration was the cause of this accident. Car was totaled.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Airbags
My car has ver been wrecked or received any damage to any part of it. While driving to work the following warning popped up on screen. RESTRAINT SYSTEM WARNING, functionality of the airbags, seatbelt tensions, belt force limits reduced.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Engine
Motor mounts failed on 2021 G20 that only has 52k miles. Vehicle when purchased as CPO had 27k miles and was suppose to be inspected to be certified as CPO. In less than 30k miles from time of purchase it seems these failed early resulting in me driving the vehicle in an unsafe manner until they were scheduled for repair

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Engine
I have reached out to both the manufacturer and dealership regarding “Recall Campaign No. 25V-636: Engine Starter” who both do not have a remedy for this recall and do not have a reasonable timeframe of when it will be resolved.

BMW updated the 3 Series for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
