Which Tiguan is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 25–27 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tiguan that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical12No crashes
Fire is the most serious pattern. Three reports involve the car catching fire, and one describes smoke from the front, then flames under the hood, with no warning lights beforehand. That fire destroyed a nearly new car at about 7,000 miles. Infotainment failures are more common. The screen freezes, goes black, or cycles on and off, and the rear camera, navigation, and driver-assistance features drop out with it. Wi-Fi dropouts cut CarPlay and Android Auto. A recurring SOS error disables emergency calling. Repeat dealer visits often end with no fix available.
Wipers and visibility3No crashes
Cracks appear on the driver's side of the windshield on their own, noticed on entering the parked car rather than while driving. Another report lists only broken glass. A separate complaint involves a damaged wiper motor, blamed on the automatic wiper sensors. The owner says the manual does not clearly explain how to fully turn them off, and the dealer quoted $1100 for the repair. Three reports are too few to show a clear pattern beyond glass damage.
Exterior lights21 crash
Both reports are about a part shortage, not a defect. After crash damage, replacement headlight assemblies are on national backorder with no delivery date. In one case the car sat unrepaired at a body shop for 194 days, and the shop would not release it with a single working headlight. One owner also could not get the rear camera recall repair done because the recall part was unavailable.
Engine2No crashes
Smoke from under the hood followed by flames shows up in one report. The car was less than a year old, gave no warning signals, and burned to a total loss. The other report describes heavy oil consumption starting around 1000 miles: a repeat low-oil warning, a test showing 4.5 quarts burned per 1000 miles, and a smoke cloud at startup. Dealers called this abnormal for a new car, but the manufacturer said it was within limits.
Transmission2No crashes
On a slope, the car moves the wrong way: it rolls forward in reverse and backward in drive, with no warning lights. Another report describes lurching under light throttle, and the car lunging forward when start/stop restarts the engine even with the brake pressed. Both problems led to near misses with objects or other vehicles. One technician reproduced the lurching on a test drive, but the reports do not show a fix.
Lane keeping2No crashes
The front sensor drops out at random while driving. A "no sensor view" message appears with warning lights, including SOS, and forward collision warning, lane keep, and adaptive cruise control shut off. A second report describes fumes and white smoke entering the cabin after an oil change. The dealer traced it to a cam or valve-area plug that was on backorder. The exposure made the occupant sick.
Backup camera2No crashes
When the car is shifted into reverse, the rearview camera shows a black screen or no image. Both reports involve recall 25V082000, and in both the recall part or update was not yet available, so dealers turned owners away, one of them three times. One driver nearly hit a pedestrian in a wheelchair while backing up, at about 13,500 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tiguan owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The entertainment screen/backup camera screen turns on and off constantly. It will not stay on and shuts off completely after so many times of it turning on and off and doesn’t turn back on unless you hold the power button down for 15 seconds but still continues the on and off. Nothing has been done to the screen for it to start doing this.

An SOS error shows and when this occurs I am unable to use the SOS crash function, as well as navigation and calling. It has been back to the dealer twice for repair but it still occurs. Volkswagen states there is no fix at this time.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
Four cracks of varying lengths ranging from roughly one inch to four inches have spontaneously appeared on the drivers side of the windshield. These were first noticed when entering the car, not while driving. Cracks can be felt from the inside of the vehicle only. One crack appears to be jagged and looks black when looking through the windshield from the inside.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2025
My car was less than a year old, had been at the dealership for routine maintenance on September 24th, and with no warning signals from the vehicle's electronics smoke started coming out from the hood while I was ~20 minutes into my drive to work. Within a short period of time there were flames, and ultimately the car was engulfed in flames, resulting in a total loss.

Where the 2024 fits in the Tiguan's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2024 is the first model year of the Tiguan's third generation (2024–2024). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Volkswagen fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (1)
Recall repairs are free at any Volkswagen dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tiguan, 2023 Arteon, and 2024-2025 Audi Q3 vehicles. An error may occur in the camera control unit at vehicle startup, resulting in the rearview camera image not displaying as intended. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the camera control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed to Audi owners April 3, 2024, and Volkswagen owners November 18, 2025.Volkswagen owners will receive a second notice once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are (Volkswagen) 91NY and (Audi) 90AV.
