Which Corolla is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Corolla. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasFWD35 mpg
1.8L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD48–50 mpg
  • The 2024 Toyota Corolla was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Corolla that averages well under the EPA 35 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Corolla, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical131 crash

Sudden stalling and loss of power lead this category. Dealers often trace these cases to a low 12-volt battery. Drivers see messages such as "Engine stopped, power steering low" or hybrid system warnings, and charging or replacing the battery does not always cure the fault. Hybrid owners report losing power brake assist tied to the Skid Control ECU recall, including a repeat failure after the recall fix. Startup failures where the car cannot detect the key fob come up often. One report involves a fatal crash. Others describe cold-start misfires, a high-pitched A/C whine, and a liftgate that stopped opening after the brake recall.

  • Transmission12No crashes

Slipping in the CVT and clutch is the main complaint. Owners describe hesitation from a stop, jerking, surging, and random transmission slips at 20 to 40 mph. Some cars lose forward power on the highway and need a tow. Transmission replacements come early, including one at 7,000 miles and an AWD CVT after 6 months. Manual-transmission owners report the clutch slipping in upper gears, and one failed clutch was denied under warranty as a wear item. Another car showed a Drive Start Control malfunction and could barely move. Dealers often find nothing wrong.

  • Steering112 crashes

Cars pull hard to one side on their own, or the wheel locks up, and some end up hitting guardrails, poles, curbs, and medians. Two of these reports are crashes, and some cars were nearly new, with under 100 or 5,700 miles. Other owners stall out with an "Engine stopped, steering power low" message and stay stuck in traffic until they restart the car. Some describe a wheel that stiffens for 3 to 4 seconds while merging or stays off-center after turns. Dealers frequently cannot reproduce the problem.

  • Exterior lights111 crash

Low-beam headlights throw shadows and dark bands across the road, worst on curves, hills, and left turns. Drivers end up using high beams. Toyota and dealers call this normal design, and adjusting the lights does not fix it. The problem shows up from new, as early as 3 miles in one report. Other complaints describe a headlight failure warning that dealers could not repair, cracked headlight lenses with dim output, weak taillights on the Corolla Cross Hybrid, and a touchscreen that brightens at night. That brightening screen played a part in one minor crash.

  • Brakes71 crash

The most serious reports describe brakes that stop working or feel soft. One highway crash injured 4 people, and in another case the pedal went to the floor. The second pattern is the Pre-Collision System braking hard with nothing in the way. Parked cars on bends, a cyclist, or an empty parking lot set it off, and owners fear being rear-ended after these false stops. In one case the soft brakes came back after a dealer brake bleed. Several reports concern the Corolla Cross.

  • Automatic emergency braking5No crashes

False automatic emergency braking brings the car to a full stop with nothing ahead. It happens at around 15 to 20 mph, and in one case at 60 mph on the highway. One driver says it happened after the pre-collision recall was done. Adaptive cruise control also misbehaves. It misses sedans and small SUVs in rain without warning the driver, and it drops out on long downhill grades and rough bumps. Dealers found no fault in these cases. Most of the reports involve the Corolla Cross.

  • Airbags44 crashes

Every report in this category describes airbags that did not deploy in a crash, and every one involves injuries. The crashes include a side impact at about 25 mph, a rear-end collision, and a multi-vehicle crash where the driver had to be cut out. One car showed an SRS malfunction warning after the crash, and the dealer cleared the code without writing a report. Another owner says emergency braking also failed, even though the skid control and braking recall had been done. In at least one case, Toyota's inspection found no failure.

  • Acceleration and cruise control22 crashes

In both reports the car moves forward or fails to stop at parking-lot speeds, and both end in collisions. One car moved ahead with the brake pressed during the shift into park and rear-ended a parked vehicle at 3 to 4 mph. The insurer declared it a total loss. The other rolled over a curb after a left turn into a parking space, and that owner reports an earlier similar incident and links the problem to a recall. No airbags deployed in these low-speed impacts.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Corolla owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2024 Toyota Corolla from Arlington Jamal Auto Group. The vehicle was purchased via a dealer sale. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 18,163 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 16,405.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
I started the car to warm it when ambient temperature was approximately 24F. The car revved up then nearly stalled about 3 times then threw a check engine light for a random cylinder misfire and disabled the forward collision warning system. The car has always had issues with nearly dying during cold starts below about 40F but this is the first time it has thrown a code.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Transmission
Brand new car with 300 miles jerks and jolts leaving from a stop and hesitates going up hill. Feels like car has no power behind it. Forward collision also breaks randomly. Currently at dealership.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Steering
I purchased a used 2024 Toyota Corolla from Chapman Chrysler Jeep on 8/9/25 at 31,890 miles. When exiting the freeway 3 miles later, the vehicle suddenly swerved uncontrollably without any steering input from me. This was an extremely dangerous incident that could have caused a serious accident injuring myself and others.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Steering
while I am driving on a highway the steering tries to turn right while i am driving. there a ditches on the right on the highway my car is not safe to drive it is putting me and my family in danger. I took my car to the dealership twice they said my car is fine.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Exterior lights
Night driving in this vehicle is impaired because of the dark spots and shaded areas coming from the headlights. It creates a distraction for the driver and is safety concern. I find it very difficult to drive at night. I have contacted Toyota directly and had vehicle inspected. Their response is that it is part of the design and is not repairable.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Exterior lights
Corolla Cross Hybrid SE- The tail lights are almost non existent. At night when I look from behind, the car is almost invisible from 50 feet away. Lic plate light is the only help. Looks very dangerous and scary to drive in the evening or in the dark. Please look into this.
