Which Elantra is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cylGas | FWD | 31 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 36 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 54 mpg |
- The 2024 Hyundai Elantra was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Elantra that averages well under the EPA 31 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Elantra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical13No crashes
The horn quits without warning in most of these reports. A blown fuse often gets replaced first, then the horn fails again, and replacement horns are sometimes back-ordered. Failures show up as early as 1,000 miles. Other reports describe the battery draining overnight in nearly new cars, a rear camera that switches to a "No signal" screen, and an amplifier failure that silences blind-spot alerts. Hybrid owners also report stalling at low speed. A new throttle body did not fix it. Single reports cite false collision braking with self-steering and delayed deceleration.
Steering52 crashes
Power steering suddenly goes heavy while driving, along with a dead speedometer and tachometer, a check engine light, and the collision warning systems cycling through a self test. Dealers report they cannot duplicate it. Two reports are crash-related. In one, the car surged in a parking lot and jerked left over a curb, deploying the airbag and totaling the vehicle. The other is a horn failure, where a service bulletin specifying one part number left the dealer without parts. Another horn failure appears at 10,000 miles.
Lane keeping4No crashes
A false driver attention alert is the main complaint. The car shows a coffee cup with "Consider Taking a Break" and beeps every 5 to 10 minutes on the highway, even when the driver stays in the lane. Some say it also turns the radio down, and none found a way to switch it off. A separate report describes camera-disabled messages for lane, blind-spot, and forward collision warnings that clear after a few minutes, plus dash and screen dimming the dealer could not reproduce.
Engine4No crashes
Two reports describe the oil drain plug coming loose after an oil change. Oil pours out and the engine is ruined. One repair estimate tops $11,000, and the dealer and the oil-change shop each blame the other while warranty coverage is refused. Sudden power loss is the other pattern. One car shut off in traffic with flashing dash lights at 8 miles. Another lost acceleration with a red speedometer at about 3,100 miles. In both cases the dealer found no fault.
Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes
A "Radar Blocked" message comes and goes for a week, then stays on and shuts off the forward safety systems. The radar was still physically in place. Another report describes the accelerator going dead while merging onto a freeway. The pedal dropped to the floor with no response and the car slowed until the driver pulled over and restarted it. No warning lights came on beforehand. With only two complaints, no wider pattern is clear.
Exterior lights2No crashes
The center-mounted brake light cuts out while driving and comes back after a restart. One owner reports this repeating for two years, starting days after purchase, and suspects wiring. A second report describes every electrical warning light coming on at once and power steering dropping out while driving. That matches loss-of-assist reports filed under steering. Both complaints describe intermittent faults rather than parts that fail and stay dead.
Wipers and visibility2No crashes
The car slows itself from 35 to 20 mph after showing a "School Zone" message where there is no school zone. The same report describes the instrument panel and center display going blank at various speeds, at roughly 10,000 miles. The dealer could not duplicate it. A separate report describes windshield cracks on both sides found while parked at about 1,000 miles. The driver-side crack sat in the line of sight, and the dealer said it was not a manufacturing defect.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Elantra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My 2024 Hyundai Elantra limited horn stopped working, almost causing someone to hit me. The car only has 4,000 miles on it. I am extremely lucky I did not get in an accident because of this. Extremely dangerous issue and soon further research its a very common problem with some newer Hyundais. There needs to be a recall before some actually gets hurt!

1- Horn. 2- Was not able to warn other driver of improper lane change. Was not able to warn driver backing out of parking space almost causing accident. 3- Yes, by dealer. 4- Yes, by dealer. 5-No warning. Horn just stops working. Appeared at first 5k miles. Note: This is a common complaint in Hyundai forums for many years.

Horn is not working. After I hit 10k miles it suddenly no longer has worked, I am currently at 34250k miles and received a recall letter from hyundai themselves in case of any issues with the car but I don't have the paper. I went to dealer one time to give it a look but they were not working with me and treated me disrespectful so I gave up and been driving with no horn in car.

The car has an annoying picture of a coffee cup and tells me to consider taking a break followed by annoying beeps. This announcement happens every 5-10 minutes on the expressway regardless of who drives the car and if they are staying in the lanes. Hyundai took the way to disable this out of the menu this year and all the people in the car hear is annoying and distracting beeps on trips on the expressway
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
This happens frequently and has probably happened at least 6 or 7 times since I purchased the car last month. Digital warning alert appears on dash for no reason saying “Consider Taking a Break” even though i consistently keep my car in my lane. The warning is both distracting and annoying, and there is no way on this vehicle to turn it off.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2025
My oil plug fell out causing engine damage. They are saying it is fault of wal mart who did last oil change but 2 months and 12,000 miles have passed since oil change and they will not cover under warranty

Recalls to confirm (1)
Recall repairs are free at any Hyundai dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
24V308000EngineMay 2024
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Elantra, Venue, and Kona vehicles. An electrical short circuit may occur in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve assembly, which can result in a loss of drive power.
Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the exhaust gas recirculation valve assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 28, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 260.
