  • On a manual car, pull away on an incline and feel for the brakes dragging as the clutch engages.
  • Try several hill starts on a manual car and watch for stalling or a hard, jerky launch.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volkswagen Golf, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission81 crash

Hill hold on manual GTI and Golf R models keeps the brakes locked for about 2 to 3 seconds after the pedal is released, no matter what the driver does with the clutch or gas. The car stalls or hesitates when pulling into traffic or turning left across lanes. One crash-related report blames a rear-end collision on this behavior. Owners say the feature cannot be turned off and dealers cannot adjust it. One separate report describes a cool-down warning and failure to shift, followed by a burned clutch and transmission replacement at about 200 miles.

  • Brakes6No crashes

The car holds the brakes for 2 to 5 seconds after release, even on slight inclines. On manual cars this leads to stalls in traffic and makes it hard to time a clean start. Owners say the system turns on too easily and uses too much brake force. It works on a timer instead of responding to clutch input, and there is no way to switch it off. Several drivers compare it unfavorably with the previous-generation GTI and Golf R, which they say behaved better or had an off button.

  • Electrical41 crash

The infotainment system freezes or becomes unusable. When it does, the backup camera, climate controls, rear traffic alert, park distance control and cruise control can all stop working. Hands-free calls over wired CarPlay drop mid-drive. Some cars repeatedly try to place assistance calls, with screen flashing and loud clicking that stop only after the car is shut off. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. One report is listed as crash-related. A separate complaint describes the sunroof moving on its own, and the switch module was replaced under warranty.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The infotainment screen shuts off and reboots, often with a loud pop from the speakers and a dashboard warning light. One car did this more than 80 times, starting the day after purchase. Another report describes repeated freeze-and-reboot cycles beginning in October 2025, which knocked out the reversing camera, cross-traffic and blind-spot warnings, collision avoidance, SOS and HVAC controls. Owners also report a rear camera image that is delayed or darkened at low speed and that kept happening after a dealer software update.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

Travel Assist shuts off, which disables adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. Warning lights then flash and beep rapidly at every speed from engine start, which drivers find distracting. Front Assist reports an impaired sensor and becomes unavailable in mist, sleet and humid weather, and the dealer says the sensor is sensitive to weather. One complaint filed here actually describes the manual-transmission hill hold delay, with near-accidents reported at only 40 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Golf owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
The automatic “hill assist” is dangerous in that it makes it easy to stall your car when trying to use your manual transmission. It’s unintuitive and truly frustrating and can cause you to stall your car when you are pulling into traffic. The previous implementation of this on the Mk7 VW GTI’s worked well but VW made this way too intrusive and complicated - and dangerous - on the Mk8 VW GTI’s. There is no option to disabled it or change the behavior.

Brakes
Hill Hold Assist: This feature appears to be on most manual transmission Volkswagen vehicles, and activates on a forward facing incline. In newer models the feature completely immobilizes movement for almost 3 seconds when stopped on an incline, after breaks are released, potentially causing a safety hazard. Request this feature either be removed all together, shortened to approximately 1 second, or become disabled when accelerator is depressed.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Electrical
Sunroof would operate without touching switch, or fail to operate if switch was touched. Similar to 2022 Golf R recall: NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V542000 I took multiple videos of the problem and VW replaced switch module under warranty.
