Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Nissan Kicks, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wipers and visibility6No crashes

The rear window explodes or cracks with a loud pop while the car sits parked in a carport, a garage, or a lot. Owners report no impact, no prior chips, and mild temperatures. In one case the glass blew outward from the edges and scattered across the garage. Owners worry about children riding in the back seat. One dealer refused warranty coverage on a car less than 2 years old and quoted over $400 for a replacement window.

Rear glass shatters with no impact. It has happened while driving at 7 MPH and after the car sat alone for hours, and one dealer could not find a cause. The same reports describe driver-aid glitches. The crash warning light and lane departure lines come on with no other vehicles nearby, and the backup camera screen stays on after shifting from reverse to drive. One report puts these failures at roughly 40,000 miles.

  • Electrical2No crashes

The rear hatch glass shatters right after the car is parked and shut off, with the defroster off and nothing touching the glass. The car had to be towed, and the dealer could not find a cause. The same owner says the car once restarted by itself after being turned off. In a separate report, the fuel gauge and distance-to-empty reading stopped working correctly after a fill-up and did not recover, and the owner could not get a service appointment.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Two problems show up here. The rear window shatters with a pop loud enough that people nearby mistake it for a gunshot, even while occupants sit in the parked car. Separately, a failed rear body vent seal lets water into the cabin. Symptoms include a sloshing sound, excess moisture, and interior windows that frost over and need scraping. A dealer confirmed water intrusion and mold on the driver-side floor, the rear seating area, and the trunk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Kicks owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The fuel gage or DTE(Distance to Empty) started to malfunction after the last time the tank was filled up. It did not correct itself and now I can't get an appointment with the Service Department to have it look at.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V154000AirbagsFeb 2024

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Titan, Frontier, Infiniti QX60, Pathfinder, 2023-2024 Sentra, Versa, Kicks, Infiniti QX50, and 2023 Rogue vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the driver's air bag inflator may absorb moisture, and cause the air bag to deploy improperly.

Risk: An air bag that deploys improperly may not protect the driver as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the front driver's air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PD103, PD104, and PMA34.
