These years share the 2024's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2024 checks

  • Take a long test drive at city and highway speeds and watch for the cluster or center screen going black or flickering.
  • Ask for service records and look for repeat visits for cluster blackouts, reprogramming, or factory resets.
  • Shift into reverse several times and confirm the rearview camera image appears every time.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Buick Envista, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical22No crashes

The instrument cluster and center screen go blank without warning, at startup or while driving, leaving no speedometer, turn-signal or warning-light display. This is the most common pattern, and it often starts in the first months of ownership. A second group of reports describes the car shutting off at stoplights or stalling while accelerating. In these cases the cluster is blank and the dealer finds no trouble codes. Other reports cite key fob and app unlocking failures, dead steering-wheel buttons, phantom door locking, false blind-spot and power-steering alerts, and sudden brake loss with ABS warnings. Dealers often find no cause.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

At highway speed the driver's side mirror vibrates, blurring the view behind the car. Windshields also crack on their own, with the crack starting in the center of the glass and no impact reported. Replacement glass was not available at the time because the model was new. Both reports describe visibility problems rather than mechanical failures, and neither gives a mileage.

Wiper blades streak the windshield in the driver's view, which is a problem in rain and snow. Factory replacement blades are on long backorder, and aftermarket blades may not stay securely attached to the wiper arm at speed. The second complaint is an air conditioning failure. The dealer traced it to a refrigerant leak that requires a new front evaporator at about 3,800 miles, with a three-month wait for the part. Parts shortages run through both reports.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Few engine failures are reported here, but they are severe. One fire-flagged report with one injury describes the engine exploding on a two-lane highway in 14-degree weather, leaving the car undrivable before it was two years old. Another describes smoke from the coolant reservoir at highway speed, an empty reservoir, and steady coolant loss of about a third of a gallon a day at 10k miles. That car had already had an air conditioning compressor failure with a backordered part. The third filing gives no details.

  • Steering3No crashes

The car shuts off completely while moving, including at freeway speeds, and steering, brakes and the dashboard go dead with it. Before shutdown, the dash flickers and the engine sputters. Some drivers also report the steering wheel locking up repeatedly in traffic. One owner reports four such shutdowns. In a separate complaint, lane-keeping assist pulls the car left during a right turn when the turn signal fails. These are loss-of-control events, though no crashes or injuries are reported.

  • Engine2No crashes

Fire is the main concern. One report describes a noise while driving, followed by smoke and flames under the hood that needed the fire department. The other describes a check engine light that comes on, goes off and returns, while the dealer says the car is safe to drive until the service visit. Neither report gives a cause or a mileage, and only 2 complaints are on file.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brake pedal goes soft and sinks to the floor, and the car coasts instead of stopping. One report pairs this with a burst of warnings, including Brake System, ABS, Service StabiliTrak and Steering Assist Reduced, plus a message limiting speed to 62 mph. Another failure happens below five miles per hour and clears after the car is shut off and restarted. Both describe a loss of normal stopping power, which is a direct crash risk.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Both complaints are about the design, and nothing actually fails. The brake lights sit low in the rear bumper instead of in the main taillights, where following drivers expect to see them. Owners worry that drivers behind them miss the brake lights. One reports a near rear-end collision while using adaptive cruise control. The layout is worth knowing about before buying.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Envista owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I bought my car in January with 7 miles on it. Back in February I tried to get back into my car and my car would not unlock from the remote or from my Buick app. The car was not responding. I had to wait 20 mins and remove the battery 3 times from the remote for it to work. Then I cannot connect my phone or my car does not respond to me pressing any buttons on my steering wheel.

Electrical
The entire digital display will go black for several seconds to a few minutes while driving. This seems to occur 3-4 times in a row and then will not happen again for days to weeksto months apart. It has happened on 5 separate occasions spanning 6 months. The dealership claims they “cannot reproduce the issue” and that they do not know what is wrong. This has been reported numerous times online for this make/model/year. This is a MAJOR safety hazard.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Steering
There was a shortage in the blinkers, and when a right turn was being made due to the blinker, not working, the car was snatched to the left, due to the lane assist being on which almost caused an accident.

How the 2024 compares with other Envista years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2024 has the most owner complaints of the 3 Envista years we cover, about 3.2 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2024 fits in the Envista's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2024 is the first model year of the Envista's first generation (2024 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Buick fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Buick dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2024 Buick Encore GX, Envista, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles. The software in the Virtual Cockpit Unit Module (VCU) may cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go blank at vehicle startup or while driving.

Risk: A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: The VCU software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A232424320.
