Which Kicks is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Kicks. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cyl | FWD | 33 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Kicks that averages well under the EPA 33 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
ABS failure and warning lights
18,689–50,000 miles
Rough running and stalling

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Kicks, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical17No crashes
The engine stalls or shuts off while driving, often at stops or in traffic. A cluster of warning lights comes on with it: check engine, traction control or slip, and automatic emergency braking. Many reports tie this to a P0101 mass air flow code that comes back after the sensor is replaced, sometimes twice. Rough idle, shaking, and refusal to accelerate from a stop are common, and some owners describe heavy steering during a stall. Other reports cover false front radar warnings, a backup camera that goes dark, and Android Auto and USB dropouts.
Brakes11No crashes
The ABS fails while its warning light stays on along with brake, slip, and collision lights. One owner reports the car did not respond during a hard stop in the rain. Dealers point to the ABS actuator and control unit. One quote was $2,448 at 18,689 miles, and other reports place the failure near 19,000 miles or after 50,000. A separate problem is automatic emergency braking that slams on or slows the car with no obstacle ahead. False radar obstruction warnings are frequent on highways.
Transmission7No crashes
Power drops suddenly while driving, and a "Malfunction See Owner's Manual" or "System Malfunction" message appears, often with slip and collision-warning lights. Letting the car sit for several minutes usually clears it, and dealers often find nothing wrong. Some reports involve the P0101 code. Others involve replaced batteries and an alternator, with the car dying at highway speed and later failing to start. One report of power loss at roughly 100,000 miles ended with no cause found. A shifter that will not move into reverse is also reported.
Stability control51 crash
The front radar reports that it is obstructed or unavailable when nothing is in the way. This happens in rain, snow, and clear sun alike. Warnings start very early, often within days of purchase or the first 300 miles, and keep coming back after dealers clean or replace sensors. Some dealers blame rain and bugs and decline further repair. One crash-related report says automatic emergency braking did not engage during an accident at about 6000 miles.
Steering4No crashes
Power steering goes heavy or quits, often when the engine shuts off in traffic. That can also leave the brake pedal hard to press. On some starts the engine runs but the gauges, stereo, and power steering stay dead until the car has been restarted several times. Other reports describe erratic steering that pulls to one side and overcorrects, rolling back on steep inclines, and rough, grinding shifts into reverse. Each of these patterns carries a real risk of losing control.
Automatic emergency braking4No crashes
Front radar and collision warnings come on with nothing ahead, and they switch off automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning. Some cars fail every time it rains, while others act up in clear weather. Repeat dealer repairs often do not hold. One report links the radar fault to a full shutdown while merging onto an interstate that left the car unable to move. The problem can appear within days of purchase.
Suspension3No crashes
Front coil springs break near the bottom and rub on the strut. Nothing warns the driver, and the break shows up only on visual inspection. One report puts the first break near 46,000 miles, with the other side failing later. Another car had struts fail before 30,000 miles, early underbody rust, and CVT slipping and jerking near 60,000 miles. That car was an undisclosed Canadian import without factory warranty. A third report actually describes a dash clicking noise and a front crash sensor warning, not a suspension fault.
Engine2No crashes
Throttle response is weak when the engine is first started and improves once it warms up. A P0101 mass air flow code and the check engine light come with it. The code tends to return after repairs, and owners describe paying hundreds of dollars for fixes that do not last. The same code shows up in other categories on this car, where it is linked to stalling and power loss.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Kicks owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Malfunction to the automatic emergency brake, yes available for inspection. Have had that sensor replaced twice and on the the last time was never called to see if the part came in so I'm still have the malfunction. The car brakes without warning, may cause an accident while on the interstate. The sensor has been vhanged multiple times. Been inspected by nissan dealers. First appeared October of 2021 and has not stopped since.

1: the back-up camera display may suddenly go dark while you’re in the middle of reversing 2: the vehicle would not start and something stalls when driving with with a boost off and had the vehicle serviced twice for this issue, but to no availability answer. The Nissan Dealership can’t find any problems .

All brake failure warning lights remain on while driving and ABS no longer works. It is a very common safety failure that Nissan is making a small fortune on. It is a definate safety item.

Where the 2018 fits in the Kicks's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2018 is the first model year of the Kicks's first generation (2018–2025). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Nissan fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Nissan updated the Kicks for 2021, so a 2018 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2021 (not on a 2018)
- Updated front fascia with larger grille
- LED headlights
- Upgraded interior features including center armrest and larger touchscreen
- Electronic parking brake introduced
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (1)
Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
