  • Drive at highway speed for at least 20 minutes and watch for the dashboard or center screen going black or rebooting.
  • Ask for service records and look for repeat visits for screen resets or a head unit replacement.
  • Start the car several times and watch for drivetrain fault messages or prompts to call roadside assistance.

Worth adding to your 2024 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls covering brakes, stability control, and air bags, and confirm each shows as completed.
  • Ask for dealer records proving recall work was actually performed, not just scheduled or waiting on parts.
  • With the engine running, press the brake pedal firmly and reject the car if it feels stiff or sinks toward the floor.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 BMW X1, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes131 crash

Brake or ABS warning lights come on, and some owners say braking power feels much weaker. Most of the 13 complaints are about a delay, though. Owners received a recall notice, and dealers keep saying the repair part is not available yet, in some cases for months. One crash report describes a driver who could not stop in a low-speed collision despite braking hard. A separate report, at about 55,000 miles, describes the pedal going to the floor at 55 mph with no response. The dealer in that case said the brakes needed replacing.

  • Stability control21 crash

In one injury crash, automatic braking did not engage after the driver lost control at 20 mph with sun glare in her eyes and hit a pole. No warning lights came on beforehand. The air bags deployed, and she went to the hospital. Both complaints in this category describe an open recall notice that dealers cannot complete because the repair part is unavailable. The second owner has not had a failure. The complaint is only that the car is still waiting for the repair.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Drive engages only after a long delay. When shifting from reverse to drive, the car keeps rolling backward as if it were in neutral. The auto start/stop system also turns the engine off before the car fully stops, and the restart is slow. Owners describe pressing the gas with no power while turning left across oncoming traffic, coasting through the intersection, and having close calls. Both complaints describe losing power at low speed, right where cross traffic is closest.

  • Steering2No crashes

In one report, the car braked on its own at about 35 mph, stopped responding to the throttle, and gave the driver little steering. Warning lights stayed on until the ignition was turned off and on again. The dealer found no fault codes and no record of the event. The other complaint is about an open recall that still had no repair months after the notice, and that owner says customer service has not answered emails. Neither report involves a crash, but both owners say they do not feel safe driving the car.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X1 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

BrakesCrash reported
I was in a low speed front end collision on Oct. 10th. I was unable to stop despite stamping on the breaks. A week after the accident I received a letter from BMW informing me of a recall for the integrated brake module with no remedy available. It looks like the first brake recall letters were sent out in Feb. of 2024 but I never received a letter

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Brakes
There is no incident as in a crash, the company (BMW) has failed to repair my vehicle or provide a fix to the brakes recall in a timely manner. When I bought the vehicle, the dealership failed to disclose that there was an open recall on this vehicle. My vehicle is telling me that I could be involved in a crash because my braking power is significantly reduced. I have no other vehicle to drive.

Transmission
Our X1 has a lot of "slip" in the transmission. It's most apparent when you back up and then switch to drive. In our X1, the car keeps rolling backward like it's in neutral. Drive doesn't engage until after a long delay.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Steering
Traveling about 35mph with no cars around, the brakes applied, no throttle response, and little steering. Warning lights illuminated and couldn't move car until turned off ignition and restarted. Dealer showed no codes and shows no record of it occurring. This symptom mirrors a recall on last years model, but not yet on 2024's. BMW says there's nothing more they can do but we are afraid to drive car because it's a guaranteed accident waiting to happen.
