Reported on other Niro years with the same design

These years share the 2024's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2024 checks

  • Stop on an incline in Park, release the brake, and confirm the car does not roll.
  • Shift between reverse and drive several times and confirm the car moves in the selected direction.
  • Watch that the R indicator does not flash red and the backup camera turns off after reverse.

Which Niro is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Kia Niro. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2024 Kia Niro was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 253 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Kia Niro, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical31 crash

Total power loss is the clearest pattern. The car goes completely dead, won't start, and every electrical system stops working. One report blames the 12-volt battery, with two failures in under a year at about 10,000 miles. Another describes the radio screen going blank at highway speed, the left and right climate zones blowing different temperatures, a camera warning, and then a no-start. A dealer traced that case to a rodent nest. The one crash report involves a rear-end collision by another driver. That owner suspects the wiring under the front passenger seat affected how the airbags and seat belts worked.

How the 2024 compares with other Niro years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2024 has the fewest owner complaints of the 2 Niro years we cover, well under the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

Where the 2024 fits in the Niro's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2024 is the second model year of the Niro's second generation (2023 on).

Kia updated the Niro for 2026, so a 2024 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2026 (not on a 2024)

  • Discontinuation of plug-in hybrid and battery electric models

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V024000SeatsJan 2025

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles. The floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat may become damaged, which can prevent the front air bags and seat belts from deploying properly or cause an unintended side curtain air bag deployment.

Risk: Air bags and seat belts that deploy improperly or an air bag deploying unintentionally can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect, replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary, free of charge. In addition, dealers will install wiring covers. Owner notification letters were mailed February 27, 2025. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC332.
