Which Kicks is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Nissan Kicks. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cyl | FWD | 33 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Kicks that averages well under the EPA 33 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Warning lights and module failures

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Nissan Kicks, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical211 crash
Several warning lights come on at once, including ABS, traction control, front and rear collision, and lane assist. During these episodes the car can stall, refuse to accelerate, or refuse to go into drive or reverse, sometimes in traffic. Some cars also brake hard on their own. Dealers have blamed the ABS module, an electronic control module, the wiring harness, or the mass air flow sensor with a recurring P0101 code, and repairs often don't last. Several failures cluster near 59,000 miles, with parts on back order. One crash report says the airbags did not deploy in a side impact.
Transmission16No crashes
The CVT slips, shudders, hesitates and loses power, especially when pulling away from a stop or climbing a hill. Some cars go into limp mode on the highway or won't move forward in traffic. Others fail with no warning. Owners report transmission replacements as early as 15,000 miles, and some say the replacement unit went bad too. Dealers often find nothing wrong, and owners report replacement quotes of about $8k once the warranty runs out. Collision warning lights and the check engine light often come on along with the transmission faults.
Brakes71 crash
Hard braking with nothing ahead is the main complaint, sometimes at highway speed. Before these events, the forward collision warning often flashes at random for days or months. In one crash report, the brakes locked in a parking lot and the car skidded into a curb. Another report describes the pedal sinking to the floor with no warning light. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. In one case near 59,000 miles, the dealer replaced the ABS and the forward camera, and a driver-assistance part was on back order.
Engine7No crashes
Stalling at red lights or while driving, sometimes on major highways, is the main pattern, and restarting may take several tries. A MALFUNCTION message or the check engine light may appear first. Rough idle after long highway drives shows up as early as 5,700 miles. Dealers often cannot duplicate the stall. Reported repairs include a vent control valve stuck open, a corroded wiring harness connector and a failed mass air flow sensor. The collision, ABS and traction control warning lights often stay on along with these faults.
Automatic emergency braking7No crashes
Automatic emergency braking kicks in with nothing ahead. Owners report this at 65 to 70 mph on the interstate and when entering tunnels at about 40 to 45 mph. Collision warning lights come on at random, and some episodes come with lost acceleration or limp mode. Dealer findings vary: a collision camera knocked out of alignment by bent brackets, a replaced ECM that did not fix the problem, and a failing alternator. Some dealers could not reproduce the fault. No crashes are reported, but owners describe near rear-end collisions.
Airbags43 crashes
Three crash reports describe airbags that did not deploy, including side impacts and a hit to the front driver side, and one driver was injured. None of the reports establishes why the airbags stayed undeployed. In a separate report near 30,000 miles, the driver airbag warning light came on and the automatic braking activated on its own. The replacement part was unavailable, and the owner was told to pay for the repair.
Lane keeping4No crashes
Dead sensors and false alerts are the main complaints, including the system reading tar lines in the road as lane markings. One owner was quoted a costly sensor repair. In other reports, the lane and collision warning lights come on together with the check engine light and a sudden loss of power. That makes it hard to accelerate when merging onto the interstate. Replacing the mass air flow sensor several times has not fixed the problem for some owners.
Fuel system3No crashes
Shaking and stalling at idle happen when stopped in traffic, at lights or while backing into a parking space, and the engine then restarts. In one report, a new car began stalling at 250 miles and stalled repeatedly in its first few thousand miles. The dealer said no fix was available yet. A separate report describes a fuel door that would not open. There is no manual release, so the driver was stuck at a gas station waiting for help.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Kicks owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
When driving 50mph - 70 mph the Forward Collision Warning will engage and the emergency brakes will engage. The car will come to a stop. This has happened while on the highway and crashes were barely avoided. It has injured my back with the sudden stop. Today 12/8 it happened again and both the Forward Collision Warning and Rear Collision Warning engaged, the car stopped from going 68 mph on the highway, and the car disabled my traction control.

All of my safety light came on dash. ABS, front end collision, back up, skid, lane assist as well as ABS. Took car in paid 6,000 for the lane assist as well as ABS car worked for only one month before it would not back up nor would it accelerate after it finally got to drive. All lights came back on and now it’s another 2100 for throttle body and MAF and sonar control unit. Car is very unstable and un-drivable.

Vehicle was just purchased from a Nissan Dealership (2020 Kicks) and less than 1,300 miles of driving throwing a code stating there is a problem with CVT transmission. Will not produce enough power when going uphill. RPMs will suddenly not go over 1 when given gas uphill. There was a recall for this problem on other 2020 kicks but ours isn't covered and we just purchased this vehicle and drove it home less than 2 months ago.

Transmission is defective by design. Fails in an unsafe manner which leaves the vehicle in a fully driving state throwing no error codes. The car however with randomly loose traction and slip while driving at roughly 40 mph. Nissan refused to address the issue without ~$8k to replace the transmission and online articles suggest these are defective and will just break again soon after replacing.

I was driving and needed to come to a stop because there was a four-way stop sign, and the brakes didn’t work. The pedal went all the way to the floor and even though I pumped the brakes, it wouldn’t stop. This is the second incident where this happens. I checked the brake pads and fluid everything is good. No warning lights come on when this happens. So the mechanic says they cannot check and see what’s wrong with it because no lights come on.

Car will shut off on its own when sitting at a red light will get a message showing the word MALFUNCTION, will restart after several attempts of pressing the start button. Has been taken to the dealer and reported and documented on my service receipt but they could not duplicate the problem and stated car was at specs. This has now happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2021
For months the front/rear collision sensors warning lights are on. The ABS and traction control warning lights are also on. The check engine light will come on for weeks at a time then go away.

Where the 2020 fits in the Kicks's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the third model year of the Kicks's first generation (2018–2025).
Nissan updated the Kicks for 2021, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2021 (not on a 2020)
- Updated front fascia with larger grille
- LED headlights
- Upgraded interior features including center armrest and larger touchscreen
- Electronic parking brake introduced
