Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2021 Nissan Kicks. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Which Kicks is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Nissan Kicks. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylFWD33 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Kicks that averages well under the EPA 33 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Nissan Kicks, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure23No crashes

Paint chips away above the upper crease of the windshield, and some rust shows through. Almost every report here is the same fleet-unit filing repeated word for word, so the count overstates how many separate cars are involved. The other pattern is a driver's door lock that doesn't follow the remote. Once the door is locked with the key, it can stay locked while the others open. It can also stay unlocked while the rest of the car locks, with no warning light, which leaves the car open while parked.

  • Electrical101 crash

The car brakes or slows sharply on its own. Collision warnings and hazard icons flash on the dash even when the road ahead is empty, and some drivers nearly get rear-ended. Others describe lost power on the highway, or pressing the accelerator and getting braking instead. In one crash, a car put in Park at about 9,000 miles kept rolling and hit a light pole. Smaller faults include heater blend doors stuck at full hot or full cold, batteries needing frequent jumps, key fobs that go undetected, and a driver's window that moves by itself.

  • Automatic emergency braking7No crashes

False collision alerts are the core complaint. The forward collision warning and VDC system report a crash or obstacle when nothing is there, often while driving into low morning or evening sun. In some cases the car also brakes hard with no traffic nearby, which creates a risk of being rear-ended. Dealers often find nothing wrong after repeated visits. In one report, a false warning was followed by a complete shutdown with every dash light on and no power to accelerate, and the car had to be towed.

  • Transmission51 crash

The car loses drive power. Symptoms include shaking, refusing to go past about 20 mph, not accelerating when the pedal is pressed, and a transmission that seizes in traffic and won't shift back into Drive. These failures cluster around 54,000 to 90,000 miles, and they often come with no warning light. One injury crash followed a loud boom and several warning lights: the car would not move, then went backward into another vehicle. Owners link the problems to the CVT. A separate complaint describes rust bubbling under the paint and a dispute over warranty coverage.

  • Airbags33 crashes

The airbags did not deploy in rear-end crashes at speeds from about 25 to 55 mph. All three reports involve crashes, and at least one involves an injury. In two of the cases, the car was stopped when it was hit. One crash sandwiched the car between two vehicles, and the passenger seat appears to have come off its tracks. In another, brake, tire pressure, and check engine lights came on after the impact, and the car was later declared destroyed.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Automatic emergency braking engages when nothing is ahead, often at freeway speeds and with a large gap to the next car. A collision warning flashes and stays on until the car is restarted, and the brake warning light can come on. One owner reports it happening 2-3 times a week and getting more frequent. Another had an unintended stop at 38,000 miles. Dealers have not found a cause after several visits, and the risk is a rear-end crash from the sudden stops.

  • Steering2No crashes

A column that locks without warning, even in the middle of a turn, is the most serious report, and the car may then refuse to start. One owner's diagnostic summary points to the electronic steering column lock, but the report says this is not confirmed. A separate complaint describes the opposite: power assist that feels far too light, with the wheel spinning easily and seeming to turn past its normal stop. This is worse in rain or snow and most noticeable when reversing or parking.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Kicks owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While driving the car seems to be stalling, slowing down while I’m driving. The car feels like it doesn’t want to go up to a fast speed on the highway. I feel uncomfortable and unsafe that the car will stop instantly on the highway and cause me to crash. So that is why I’m reporting this because it’s unsafe. Secondly the left driver side window goes up in down while I’m driving. This also makes me feel uncomfortable while driving.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Electrical
Blend doors on the heater do not work. If the temperature is set to 62 degrees, cold air as expected comes out of vents. If set to 63 degrees, maximum hot air comes out of vents, even after the cabin is warmed up. This is distracting to keep fumbling with the temperature control, toggling between 62 and 63 while driving. Keeping the air controller at 63 is also a distraction since the cabin is uncomfortably hot.

Automatic emergency braking
I have experienced my forward collision warning light coming on when driving toward the sun in the mornings on my way to work. When I go into a shade it turns off but immediately pops back on and slows my car down when I return into the sunlight. It has not done this since I bought in July 2021 until last week.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2021

Automatic emergency braking
Driving approximately 40mph with no one in front, sides, rear and car suddenly braked without warning for no reason. Glad no car behind could have caused accident.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Transmission
At 54,000 miles on my car my car was shaking and not wanting to go past 20miles an hour. My check engine light came on. Safety was at risk, there was no warning that my car was having trouble. It was driving fine one minute and ttem all of a sudden check engine light came on. Feel that the cvt engines in Nissan are not safe

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V496000SteeringJul 2023

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2021 Versa and Kicks vehicles. An intermittent electrical connection in the electric power steering (EPS) torque sensor can disable the power steering assist.

Risk: Loss of power steering assist can increase the steering effort required, especially at low speeds, and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the steering column torque sensor lot code and replace the steering column assembly, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 8, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PMA26. This recall involves vehicles that were previously inspected, but did not receive a steering column replacement, under recall number 22V-693. These vehicles will need to be reinspected for this recall.
