Which CX-30 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Mazda CX-30. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cyl4WD, FWD26–28 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-30 that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Excessive engine oil consumption

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Mazda CX-30, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine36No crashes

Oil disappears between changes with no visible leak. The low oil warning often appears well before the next service, sometimes as early as 4,600 miles, and the dipstick shows about a quart low. Some report adding a quart every 1,500 miles. Several reports involve the 2.5-liter turbo. Dealers often confirm there is no leak, call the consumption normal, or cite a service bulletin with no fix. Owners worry the engine could seize while driving.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The battery goes flat without warning, and the car won't start until it gets a jump. Owners describe repeat drains, replaced batteries that die again, and repeated dealer visits where the cause is never found. Some cars lose power at low speed with a 12-volt charge warning on the dash. In one case the engine stalled at 65 mph with engine and computer malfunction messages. Smaller complaints include a display or USB that cuts out and a noise from the headlight.

  • Wipers and visibility8No crashes

Wavy, distorted windshield glass is the main complaint. Drivers report eye strain, headaches, and fatigue on long drives, plus poor night visibility and trouble judging distance. Some buyers notice it within days of purchase. Replacement windshields often show the same distortion, and dealers say Mazda calls some distortion normal for this design. Other reports describe a tiny chip spreading into a long crack and sunroof glass that shattered outward at highway speed.

  • Brakes73 crashes

Sudden acceleration while parking or shifting gears is the most serious pattern here. Drivers press the brake, the car fails to stop, and it hits a pillar or nearby objects. This category includes 3 crash reports and 1 injury. Other complaints describe automatic braking that slams on with nothing ahead, causing a neck injury, and a Critical Brake System Malfunction message at 22,000 miles. Fast rear brake wear also appears.

  • Transmission7No crashes

Transmission failures can cut acceleration or make the car surge and slow down in bursts at highway speed, then leave it unable to move. Engine and transmission warning lights may come on only after the problem starts. One car ran rough with an engine malfunction light, and the dealer blamed a corroded wiring harness before calling for a new transmission. The rest of these reports repeat other problems: oil consumption, dead batteries, and random lock, liftgate, and alarm behavior.

  • Acceleration and cruise control52 crashes

The car speeds up without the driver pressing hard on the gas, sometimes while parking, and the brakes fail to stop it. Reports include 2 crashes and 1 injury, one at about 1,000 miles. Adaptive cruise control can surge hard once the car ahead moves out of the lane, sometimes revving to 3500-4000 rpm. One report pairs a lunge and hesitation with a transmission error and a stuck shift solenoid code.

  • Automatic emergency braking31 crash

Emergency braking kicks in with nothing in the way, and the car can skid to a stop in a live traffic lane. Drivers say only distance from the car behind prevented a rear-end crash. One crash report with 4 injuries says cruise control did not disengage when the brake was pressed approaching a light. Insects on the front sensor came up in one false-braking report.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious side and corner impacts. Both reports are crashes, with 3 injuries between them. In one, the side airbags on the struck passenger side stayed off while the driver side deployed. In the other, the frontal airbags stayed off when the car was hit broadside. Both vehicles were totaled. No warning lights were reported beforehand.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-30 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Driving home from work today I got a "low engine oil level" alert/warning. First time this has happened. I have approx. 15,500 miles on my vehicle and it was serviced on 3/22/22 (11,828 miles). That service included a full oil and filter change. I see it has been noted that there is an oil leak with this particular vehicle but Mazda has not been able to figure out what is causing it. Just wanted it to be reported

Engine
Engine is consuming/burning oil. I have needed to add 1 qt of oil every 3-4k miles, since purchased new. Car now has 25,000 miles and I have added oil 6 times. Ive called the dealer(Classic Mazda in Mentor Ohio) and they insist this is normal and there is no issue with the engine. Yet, I read on the internet that this is a known problem.

Electrical
Two issues A) my usb or display stop to work often I have reset to make it work again, look like loose electrical 2) many time it has also happened start key malfunction error I have jumped start, I have replaced battery same issue

Electrical
I'm getting a critical engine error with the car saying I have low oil pressure. The dealership has looked and said that they can't fix it. They said I can drive it with the warning up

Wipers and visibility
Manufacturing defect in the windshield glass: distorted/warped windshield glass causing waves/ripples. Result: impaired visibility when operating vehicle and rapid eye fatigue. Google search (forums) indicates that this is a well known issue on several Mazda models. The issue presumably existed at factory. I noticed upon purchase as CPO at 6k miles. Available for inspection if needed.

Wipers and visibility
Was driving on interstate, during the afternoon, not close to any other traffic ahead. It was neither raining nor particularly windy. I heard a very loud “explosion” sound, like a gunshot. I pulled over and my sunroof is bowed OUTWARD a little, and missing a big section of glass. There is no rock or debris laying on the interior screen, and the sunroof is NOT concave like from an impact. It is clearly blown upward.

Brakes
Rear brakes became extremely worn very quickly. Had to replace rear brakes in September of 2023. Purchased the car with 0 miles in February of 2022.
