2024 CX-30

23 owner complaints
  • Airbags 6
  • Lane keeping 3
  • Electrical 3

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Run the VIN through federal recall records and get dealer paperwork showing every open recall was completed.
  • Seat an adult passenger and confirm the passenger airbag indicator shows the airbag is on.
  • Check the headliner, inside windows, and carpets for moisture, water stains, or a musty mold smell.

2022 CX-30

28 owner complaints
  • Engine 6
  • Steering 4
  • Electrical 3

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Pull the dipstick and compare the level to the last oil change date; a quart low suggests oil burning.
  • Ask for service records showing oil top-offs or dealer visits for low oil warnings.
  • Have a shop scan for stored ABS, brake, and forward collision fault codes.

2021 CX-30

94 owner complaints
  • Engine 36
  • Electrical 9
  • Wipers and visibility 8

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Pull the dipstick before the test drive and ask for service records showing oil top-offs between changes.
  • Ask the seller whether the low oil warning has ever come on, and get any dealer oil consumption records.
  • Sit in both front seats and look at straight lines through the windshield for waviness or distortion.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Mazda CX-30, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes32 crashes

The car keeps rolling forward with the brake pedal fully pressed, and two of three reports end in a crash into the vehicle ahead. Drivers say pressing harder does not stop the car and brake assist does not engage. Dealers who inspect these cars report finding nothing and cannot reproduce the problem. A separate complaint describes phantom braking: the automatic emergency braking system stops the car on the highway with nothing ahead, then lights the brake warning. Both patterns create a real crash risk.

  • Suspension21 crash

Sudden acceleration with the foot on the brake, preceded by an ActiveSense system malfunction warning, leads to a collision in a parking garage in one report. The dealer had blamed the earlier warning on sensors overheating in hot weather. The other complaint describes front-end noise and a shifting problem on a nearly new car with about 4,014 miles. The dealer called the noise normal and said the transmission needed to learn the driver's habits. Neither report describes a confirmed suspension part failure.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The driver's side wiper fails to clear rain from the windshield, and the problem comes back after the dealer replaces the blades and arms. That report puts the failure at about 30,000 miles. A separate complaint describes a windshield with a wavy, orange-peel distortion across the whole glass. The distortion makes road signs and lane lines look warped and causes dizziness after extended driving. A warranty replacement windshield turned out worse than the original.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Pressing the brake at low speed makes the car lurch and accelerate as if the gas pedal were down. Reports describe it while coasting through a parking lot, shifting out of Park, and backing into a space. Drivers have to press the brake hard again to regain control, and one near miss involves a gate. One complaint also says the car does not stop right away when braking on the freeway. This is a loss-of-control risk in tight spaces.

  • Airbags2No crashes

Side curtain airbags deploy without a crash while the car travels at about 20 mph on slushy roads. Both reports describe no collision, no impact, and no rollover, and one includes a police report noting no crash occurred. The deployment damages the interior, and one car is declared a total loss by insurance. Mazda attributes the deployment to connected data suggesting a possible rollover but refuses to share the Event Data Recorder information.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-30 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
I was driving my car on the highway. The car automatically deployed the emergency braking system with no objects in front of the car. The car automatically braked then flashed the brake warning indicator. Car mad itself come to a complete stop. I began researching and found that others have had issues with “phantom braking” when the car has collision avoidance technology. This needs to be seriously investigated as it is a safety hazard.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Acceleration and cruise control
While coasting slowly through a parking lot at approximately 5-8mph I tapped the brake to slow further while making a tight turn and to safely pass a vehicle also turning towards me. This caused the car to lurch and accelerate as though my foot was on the gas pedal, but it wasn't. I had to step hard on the brake to bring it under control.

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2022-2023 CX-30 and 2023 CX-50 vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) may be damaged, which can result in reduced braking ability.

Risk: Reduced braking ability can increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the ABS HCU, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 12, 2023. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 5823D.
