Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Transmission failure and slipping
60,000–66,828 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Buick Encore GX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine15No crashes
Sudden loss of power leads these reports. The check engine light comes on, the car drops into reduced power or limp mode, and codes point to turbo underboost. Some owners report the turbo failing more than once. Others describe stalling in traffic with no warning, RPM swinging at a stop, or overheating tied to a faulty coolant control valve. Parts sometimes sit on backorder for weeks. An evap leak detection pump failure appears at 78,871 miles. Losing power on highways and merges creates a real crash risk.
Turbocharger failure drives most of these reports. The check engine light comes on, the car jerks or will not accelerate, and an "Engine Power Reduced" message can hold speed to 25 mph. Dealer repairs to the turbo or its intercooler do not always hold, and the failure returns. One turbo failure appears at 45,000 miles. Another report describes the exhaust manifold detaching with loud popping and scraping at 52,590 miles. Sudden power loss at highway speed creates crash risk.
Transmission10No crashes
A false "Shift to Park" message is the most common fault. The car is already in Park, but the warning and chime stay on, and the vehicle may refuse to shut off or start. Owners jiggle the shifter, restart the car repeatedly, or disconnect the battery. Most of these reports fall between 57,000 and 61,000 miles, and dealers often cannot find the cause. Other reports describe transmission slipping and lost forward gear around 66,828 miles. Losing propulsion while driving is a serious crash risk.
Brakes7No crashes
A hard brake pedal and brake system warnings lead these reports. Owners describe a very stiff pedal, delayed stops, and warning lights for brakes, ABS, and traction control, in one case with a 62 mph top-speed limit. Others report the car stopping abruptly under light pedal pressure, and a passenger suffered a neck injury. Dealer diagnoses name the vacuum module, master cylinder, or brake system control module. Several failures show up within the first few thousand miles. Weak or unpredictable braking raises crash risk.
Electrical2No crashes
Reduced engine power and complete loss of propulsion are the symptoms here. Owners describe a check engine light, sluggish driving, and heavy shaking above 35 mph. One dealer traced the fault to wiring melted by an overtightened zip tie and cited a GM service bulletin. Another report ties repeated power loss to the turbocharger and says GM refused special coverage because of a branded title. Losing power while driving raises crash risk.
Equipment2No crashes
No mechanical failures appear in these reports. Both owners describe a recall notice for the emergency jack with no replacement part available. They say the wait has gone on too long. In one case the dealer removed the jack, cleared the recall, and sent the car home without a replacement. The complaint here is a parts shortage at dealers, not a breakdown on the road.

Have had my car in the shop multiple time to be put on computer. It states under boost in the turbo. This car is barley 3 years old . And when the check engine light comes on the car goes into limp mode. This is just crazy . I've read more and more people complaining about this but buick doesn't want to do anything about it

Vehicle overheating randomly due to faulty Coolant Control Valve. Vehicle goes into reduced power mode and also instructs you to pull over and idle engine. Part is on National backorder for weeks. The issue could cause Vehicle to become inoperable and cause a crash.

I bought my vehicle the later part of 2021 and the transmission and engine no longer work and need to be replaced. When I first purchased the vehicle the battery completely died in less than 6 months. Numerous repairs and now the warranty won't work since I am over 60000 miles even though I have not met the expiration date on my warranty. They want to charge me between 8000-12000 for repairs.

When trying to park/shut off, the vehicle gives ‘shift to park’ error message upon shifting to park and won’t shut off or when starting will give ‘shift to park’ error message and not start. This seems to be a common issue with this vehicle model…we could really use a recall

This week I leased a white buick encore gx fwd in the preferred model. After driving off the lot I noticed the brakes are very hard to press down and I can’t stop the vehicle over short distances. This seems dangerous and my dealership says nothing is wrong with the car but I can tell something is wrong with the brakes and this isn’t how new brakes are supposed to feel. After googling the symptoms it seems to be a problem with the brake booster.

Brake System Control Module Replacement - The brake system control module needs replacement due to a fault detected with 10 volts on terminal 1. Replacing this component can help maintain proper functionality of the brake system and ensure consistent performance. Why would this all of a sudden be faulty after almost 5 years?

Where the 2021 fits in the Encore GX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the second model year of the Encore GX's first generation (2020–2023).
Buick updated the Encore GX for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)
- New Pure Design philosophy
- Change of trim levels to Preferred, ST, and Avenir

General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Buick Encore GX and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. The emergency jack, if not positioned as directed in the vehicle owner's manual, can fracture while in use.
Risk: A fractured jack can cause the vehicle to collapse, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace the jack, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owner of the safety risk are expected to be mailed July 26, 2021. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac CT4, CT5 and XT4, 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and 2020-2021 Buick Encore GX vehicles. Sensor connection contamination in the electronic brake boost system may cause an interruption of communication between the sensor and the brake boost system.
Risk: If communication with the sensor is interrupted, the electronic brake boost assist could be lost. Extra pedal force will be required to slow and stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electronic brake boost module, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is A202307260.
