Which CX-30 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Mazda CX-30. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cyl4WD26 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-30 that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Mazda CX-30, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine6No crashes

Oil disappears between changes with no visible leaks. The low oil light comes on, and the dipstick shows about a quart missing. It often happens every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, well before the scheduled change. Some cars burn oil before 6,000 miles on the odometer. One car showed a low oil pressure warning at highway speed. Dealers reportedly call it a known issue but have not found a cause or a fix. Owners end up adding oil between services.

  • Steering42 crashes

The car sometimes moves on its own, and two of these reports involve crashes. In one, the wheel jerked right and the car surged forward at about 3,000 miles. That crash caused an injury. Another car lunged forward when put in reverse. Lane assist gives false warnings, and in one case it steered toward a guardrail after the infotainment system failed. Separately, the steering wheel covering wears out early, sometimes before 50 thousand miles. Warranty coverage for the worn wheel has been inconsistent.

  • Electrical31 crash

Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning can fail to act before a crash. Brake and sensor fault messages then fill the dash. The center infotainment unit glitches, and navigation and the backup camera stop working. Other faults include a battery that died at 19,742 miles for no known reason and continued oil burning. On mountain grades, the transmission may refuse to shift above 3rd gear until the driver shifts by hand.

  • Airbags21 crash

The driver air bag can fail to deploy in a side impact. One report describes a driver-door hit at about 35 mph with no deployment and an injured driver. In another case, a warning came on saying the seat belts and air bags were not working properly. That car had fewer than 3000 miles and no crash history. No warning lights appeared before the crash in the non-deployment report.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The car brakes hard with nothing ahead of it. In one report, it came to a full stop on a freeway exit. Adaptive cruise control slows for cars in other lanes, especially where lane lines or turn lanes are not marked. That raises the risk of being rear-ended by following traffic. Reports to the dealer and to Mazda have not settled the problem.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-30 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
It has an oil consumption issue. Every 3,000-3,500 miles is will give the oil low light. It will be 1 quart low. The car takes 6 quarts of 5w30 synthetic oil and requires oil changes every 7,500-8,000 miles. I have had to put a quart in every time. I have taken it into the dealership and a third party oil service as well. The dealership has no idea why it keeps running through the oil. They state that it's a known issue but no recall.

Engine
At around 26,528 miles my 2022 CX-30 2.5s (not the turbo) developed a "Low Oil Pressure" warning while driving between 55-65mph on 07/06/2025. The car has had regular oil and filter changes about every 5K miles. The last oil and filter change was at 25,259 mileage on 05/25/2025. There aren't any visible oil leaks. I have read that this is a common problem for other Mazda CX-30 years 2021- 2022.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

SteeringCrash reported
car was put on rear and it leaped forward and crashed and caused property damage and driver was shocked. faulty system, Collison system failure, reverse gear failure. on two different occasions car initiated warning like misuse of pedals when car was rolling down which was errored warning. false lane assist warnings.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2022

Steering
The steering wheel seems to prematurely wear on newer Mazda vehicles including my Mazda CX-30 from 2022. Mazda claims hand sanitizer to be the main culprit but I suspect quality issues and materials to play a factor. Many can be found with wear on the steering wheel even starting with less than 50 thousand miles. Some have received warranty claims while others are denied.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Airbags
Suddenly, for no known reason, the dash displayed a warning that the seat belts and air bags are not properly operational and to get the vehicle inspected. Note there is less than 3000 miles on the vehicle. The vehicle has not been involved in any collisions and has not been damaged. I have scheduled an inspection with the dealer, and an internet search revealed this is a problem with new CX-30s.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Mazda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V275000BrakesApr 2023

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2022-2023 CX-30 and 2023 CX-50 vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) may be damaged, which can result in reduced braking ability.

Risk: Reduced braking ability can increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the ABS HCU, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 12, 2023. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 5823D.
