Which HR-V is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Honda HR-V. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.8L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 29–30 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A HR-V that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Honda HR-V, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Airbags172 crashes
Most of these reports are about a recall repair that dealers cannot finish. Owners got notice of air bag recall 24V064000, then learned the replacement part was not yet available. Many say the wait has gone on far too long. Few describe an actual air bag failure. Two crash reports involve injuries, with deployed bags striking the driver's face and eye. In one, the collision repair also stalled because a replacement driver's seat belt was on national back order.
Electrical10No crashes
The right side of the instrument display, which shows the fuel gauge, odometer, and miles to empty, goes blank, flickers, or shows scrambled readings. Most reports link it to cold weather. Some say it comes back only after the car warms up or has run for about 20 minutes. The main worry is running out of fuel with no warning. A dealer mechanic blamed a bad connection, but no confirmed fix appears in these reports. Others describe power locks failing after rain, doors locking on their own while driving, and the battery going dead after the doors were left open.
Transmission4No crashes
The CVT transmission fails, and dealers find metal particles or shavings in the fluid. Drivers say the car loses the ability to accelerate on the highway with no warning lights beforehand, which led to near collisions. One owner outside warranty was told to pay for the repair. That owner points out that 2016-2020 HR-Vs got a warranty extension for a similar problem. On a nearly new car, the transmission was slow to engage from reverse to drive on cold mornings and slipped under hard braking. The dealer could not reproduce it.
Acceleration and cruise control31 crash
The car lurches forward unexpectedly at low speed, either while parking or when shifting from neutral into drive with the brake pressed. One of these events ended in a crash into a tree, and the dealer could not reproduce the fault. Another report describes the brakes applying on their own, including while slowing for a light, which raises the risk of being rear-ended. Five dealer visits, a camera adjustment, and a wheel alignment did not fix it.
Engine3No crashes
The car loses power or will not accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed, at low speed and on the interstate, with no warning lights. Dealers told owners the car was working as designed or that the behavior comes from the software. In the most serious report, the car stopped on its own at about 60 mph after a whining noise. The dealer traced that failure to the CVT at about 124,208 miles, and the manufacturer covered the repair as goodwill.
Brakes3No crashes
The automatic braking system slams on the brakes at highway speed with nothing ahead. A beep and a grinding noise come with it, and it happens again and again over weeks. Another report describes the opposite problem, with the car creeping forward while stopped at lights unless the driver presses harder on the pedal. A third mentions a scraping sound, as if the parking brake were on. None of these reports mention a warning light.
Steering21 crash
The wheel stiffens, sticks during turns, or pulls the wrong way. In one report, it pulled against the driver and the car hit concrete sidewalls, leaving the driver with body and neck pain. Another describes the wheel sticking in turns at 30 to 40 mph and not returning to center. On straight roads, it sometimes feels like it locks and unlocks. Both reports describe a loss of control while driving.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints HR-V owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My complaint is about the driver side airbag which you have the recall on. I went to the dealership and I call Honda and they cannot explain to me what’s wrong with the car? I asked him is the car able to drive and the dealership said no and Honda say yes, so what is the problem with the car? Nobody can explain it to me, I own the car is the car able to drive or not can somebody tell me what’s wrong with the car?

The SRS light came on one morning when I started my car. I haven’t done anything for this to happen. When the break indicator comes up when too close to a vehicle my car make sudden breaks and stop.

The LCD display which indicates fuel levels and such is made by a bad connection and will short out in all Honda 2021 HRV models that experience cold weather. This was told to me by a mechanic at a Honda Dealership in Colorado Springs. This screen going out would cause you to not know where your gas levels sit causing issues and potential safety concerns.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
Odometer section of dashboard failed to light up/turn on. Continued to happen after restarting the car. Eventually after running the car for ~20 minutes it started flashing and turned on. If this continues to occur or fails completely/indefinitely, there is a risk of stalling on the road or highway if unable to monitor the gas gauge.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2024
The car accelerated unexpectedly, yes it is available for inspection, I have not taken to dealer. Car has not been inspected by any police dealer etc. No warning lights appeared. Yes car accelerated toward several on coming cars. I shifted gear from neutral with brake to drive with unexpected acceleration.

Honda (America Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Fit and 2019-2022 HR-V vehicles that were previously recalled under NHTSA recall number 23V-046. The rearview camera image may not display when the engine is started with a key, due to a design error in the audio display power circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: An inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the display audio unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are TIQ and DIR. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 23V-046 will need to have the new remedy completed.
