Which Sorento is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Kia Sorento. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • The 2024 Kia Sorento was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sorento that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Kia Sorento, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical112 crashes

Sudden electrical failures while driving lead this list. Reports describe the car losing all power, including power steering and headlights, and sometimes stalling. Others describe every warning light coming on at once, followed by brake trouble. Some cars brake hard on empty highways for no reason, and one crash followed a 'sensor blocked' collision-assist warning. Smaller faults include dead horns, door switches that stop working the windows and locks, and blackouts of the infotainment, reverse camera and instrument panel. One report involves a fire on the interstate. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults, and owners wait for parts.

  • Engine5No crashes

Coolant leaks from the hybrid radiator or inverter cooling system are the most common complaint. Some appear as early as 1,300 miles. Dealers usually blame a rock puncture and refuse warranty coverage. Owners point to an exposed lower grille. The leaks bring overheating, an inverter coolant warning and, in some cases, total loss of power. Other reports describe a flashing check engine light with the engine shaking and losing speed on the highway, and metal shavings in the oil at about 31,000 miles. Dealers are booking diagnosis 1-3 months out.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Hesitation and lost acceleration are the main complaints. The transmission slips, shifts hard, or will not upshift when pulling away from a stop. It feels stuck in neutral, and other traffic nearly hits the car from behind. At idle, revs rise and fall and the engine sputters as if about to stall, then propulsion drops even with the pedal floored. Some reports describe all dashboard lights turning orange while the brakes take about 5 seconds to respond. Several drivers describe close calls with traffic or pedestrians.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Panoramic sunroof glass shatters without any impact. Owners say it happens at highway speed with a bang like a gunshot, and broken glass falls on the people inside. A rear sunroof panel also breaks on a car that was parked and garage kept. The glass falling into the back seat is a clear hazard for passengers. One minor report describes exterior trim that will not stay clipped down. Dealer appointments for diagnosis take several days.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Both reports involve crashes. In one, a side impact rolls the car over, the airbags do not deploy, the seatbelt releases, and the occupant is thrown through the shattered moonroof and injured. The other is really a braking complaint. Automatic braking engages in snow mode, locks the wheels, and the car slides into a tree. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both describe serious crashes.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Glass breaking without an impact is the theme here too. One report describes the panoramic sunroof panel bursting at highway speed. Another describes a large crack spreading across the driver side of the windshield while the car sat parked, with no chip or impact point. Only 2 complaints are on file, but the sunroof failure matches the pattern reported under other categories.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Headlights, taillights and the dash go dark for a few seconds while driving at night, then come back on, with no warning beforehand. The owner blames software, but the dealer says the car is not covered by the related recall and offers only a headlight check. A separate complaint describes headlight lenses fogging up and cutting light output, with the replacement waiting on manufacturer approval.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sorento owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Both Horn units need to be replaced . It's been confirmed by Safford Brown Kia in Manassas ,Virginia. The dealership did not have the parts and I have to wait 3 to 4 days for the parts to come in. In the meantime I have been driving the vehicle without an active horn because I was not given a loaner vehicle . I did call Kia Customer service whom stated that they are not aware of an open recall for my issue .

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Electrical
Horn has stopped working. Appears it happens often with the 24 sorento. Almost had a car collision due to the inability to warn the driver of the other car that I was in my lane. I do have an appointment to have it looked at, but not for almost 2 weeks.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
Vehicle hesitation, transmission slippage at low speeds for up shifting and hard shifting. Pulled out of a parking lot onto a main road from stop and my vehicle would not upshift and sounded like I was in neutral and would not accelerate. I had a vehicle behind me that almost rear ended me, I pulled over and had to put the vehicle in park. Once restarted, it would shift again.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
All dashboard lights turned on and were orange during two separate instances. During both instances I went to brake and nothing happened. Eventually the brake finally engaged. On one of the instances the brakes took ~5 seconds to re-engage while coming to a traffic light stop. There were two pedestrians that I almost hit before they re-engaged.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Body and structure
Driving on interstate during a partly cloudy day at 53 degrees going 65 mph. There were vehicles approximately half a mile away in the front of us and approximately 2 car lengths behind us with no noticeable debris on the road. Moon roof was fully extended and the moon roof exploded without warning (not due to rocks). It sounded like a gun shot went off and we were covered in glass.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Body and structure
The rear glass panel on the panoramic sunroof shattered without being bumped or hit, the gar is garage kept and in a treeless parking lot in day. The loud noise as well as damger of glass falling into back seat of car is dangerous. Am taking it to dealership this weekend for them to diagnose a cause but were unable to see us for three days.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
