Which Sorento is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Kia Sorento. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.4L 4-cylAWD, FWD23–25 mpg
3.3L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–22 mpg
  • The 2020 Kia Sorento was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sorento that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Excessive engine oil consumption

    80,000–100,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Kia Sorento, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine411 crash

Oil burning is the main pattern. Engines use a quart or more between changes with no visible leak, often starting around 80,000 miles. Fouled spark plugs, misfires, a flashing oil light, and a check engine light follow. Many reports end in sudden power loss or a stall in traffic, sometimes on a freeway exit, and several needed a full engine replacement past 100,000 miles. Two reports describe engine fires, one injuring two occupants. Dealers often decline coverage when the VIN falls outside campaigns or the mileage limit.

Fire breaks out while driving at about 55 mph in one report, followed by a stall. The driver coasts to the shoulder and the fire department puts out the fire. The other report describes oil consumption so heavy that oil must be added daily, with the pan found low or empty at around 100,000 miles. Both match the oil burning and fire patterns reported under the engine heading.

  • Electrical16No crashes

Fire is the main concern, with five fire-related reports. Several follow the same sequence: every dashboard warning light comes on at once, a loud pop, then smoke through the vents and flames under the hood. Other fires start at the driver's-side fuse box or in trailer hitch wiring covered by recall 22V703. Separate reports describe headlights and running lights going dark while driving at night, a horn that fails again after replacement, and a control module shorted during the anti-theft software installation.

  • Transmission15No crashes

Erratic shifting on cold starts is the most common report. The transmission slips, stutters, or hesitates when pulling away, worst from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, until the car has warmed up. Some cars surge forward when coming to a stop. Problems often start within days of purchase, and transmission reprogramming or a rebuilt transmission did not fix them. Other reports describe jerking at higher mileage, oil burning blamed on piston rings, connecting rod bearing failure, and sudden coolant loss that causes overheating.

  • Trailer Hitches7No crashes

These reports concern a recall repair, not breakdowns. Recall 22V703000 covers the trailer hitch, but repair parts are unavailable for long stretches and dealers cannot say when they will arrive. Most of these complaints involve no failure at all, only the wait. One describes a burning odor in the cabin while the repair is pending. Fire reports under the electrical heading tie hitch wiring to this same recall, so an unrepaired car carries real risk.

  • Brakes42 crashes

Braking fails to stop the car as expected in hard stops. Reports describe the ABS pushing the foot off the pedal and releasing, the car pulling hard left as if only one side is braking, a pedal that does not engage until pumped, and brakes grabbing with a metal-on-metal sound at low speed. Two reports involve crashes, one into a concrete wall, and four people were injured across these complaints.

  • Steering3No crashes

Noise and stalling make up these few reports. One describes loud clunks and a shaking wheel that keep the car under 20 mph. Another describes a rattle behind the steering wheel during acceleration that the dealer cannot reproduce. A third is really a stall and shutdown while pulling away. Three complaints are too few to show a pattern, but a clunking, shaking wheel is a serious drivability problem.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Headlights and taillights go out together in the main lighting report, with brake lights dark too, and the dealer quotes $150 just to diagnose it. Another report links failed fob locking and inoperative windshield wipers to the anti-theft software update. A third complaint is actually about oil burning and a burnt oil smell, not lighting. The risk is driving at night or in traffic with no working lights.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in a frontal crash at 65 to 70 mph, according to one report, with head, neck, back, and abdomen injuries to the driver and passenger. The second report involves a side impact near the front door and gives no detail on airbag behavior. Both complaints are crash-related, with four people injured in total. Two reports are too few to show a pattern.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sorento owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
I have 105k miles on the vehicle. My vehicle is burning oil between oil changes, so much so that there is no oil on the dip stick. There is a recall for kia engine's doing this but mine is not listed. I owe 3500 dollars for payoff and am now faced with buying a new vehicle or replacing the engine myself because it just happened out of warranty. If this is a know issue with these engines it needs to be remedied.

Engine
Two weeks ago the engine started to consume oil excessively. I had to add 1/2 quart of oil, just to have it above the low level. Last week I added 1/2 quart oil, after driving in the city a few hundred miles. There were no visible oil leaks noticed by the dealership's technician. The SUV has only 37,000 miles, and all the maintenance was done at the KIA dealership.

Electrical
While adding the anti theft software to our 2020 sorento they short circuited the BLM which is the brain box for the vehicle. They have had the car for 4 weeks now and they say the have the part on order but they do not know when the part will be sent. In the mean while they are making us pay for a rental car on our credit card until the part comes in and then will reimburse us.

Electrical
My 2020 Kia Sorento engine light came on and not able to accelerate more than 40 mph. The code when I went to an auto repair shop says knock signal range/ performance. I had it reset by the mechanic and the engine light still on. The engine is also eating through oil very fast. We have to fill the car with oil frequently in between oil changes.

Transmission
Hi, Please this Kia Sorento 2020 LX model of mine has a problem with glow relay. I just saw my check engine light on my dashboard when my mechanic checked for me it was confirmed with the OBD equipment to be a glow relay causing that. i have used my vehicle for only 2 years after purchase. Kindly recall this to be fixed for all users of this vehicle year model. Counting on your usual assistance and support. Thanks

Transmission
Kia Sorento has a well documented engine failure. The issue starts with the vehicle consuming engine oil. Subsequently the connecting rod bearings fail resulting in severe engine failure. This happens even with regular oil change maintenance. I experienced that with this vehicle. Kia was contacted but said this vehicle's vin did not fall under the list of affected vehicles in their class action lawsuit

(Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
