Which Sorento is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Kia Sorento. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylHybrid | AWD, FWD | 34–37 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 460 mi range |
- The 2023 Kia Sorento was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sorento that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Kia Sorento, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical331 crash
The most common failure is a sudden loss of power at highway speed. Hazard lights or a full dash of warnings come on, the car won't accelerate, and some hybrids shut off completely with the parking brake engaging in a travel lane. Dealers often find no codes and can't reproduce it. A second pattern involves the HVAC blower and its wiring: burning plastic smells, smoke, and one fire, linked to a recall that owners say has gone months without a remedy. Backup camera mounts also break again after the recall clip repair. One crash report describes runaway acceleration that the brakes did not stop.
Transmission211 crash
Transmission shudder, hesitation, and stalling show up early, often between 3,000 and 13,000 miles. Owners describe the dual-clutch gearbox sticking in first or second gear, revving without moving, bucking, and shifting late or harshly. Hybrids show a "Check Hybrid System" warning and creep along at 10 to 20 mph. Dealers often find no stored codes and send the car home. Other reports include transmission fluid left low from the factory and gasoline diluting the engine oil. One crash is reported.
Engine12No crashes
Hesitation and lost power are the common thread. Cars pause a second or two before moving from a stop, struggle on steep grades in eco mode, or drop into limp mode with check engine and hybrid system warnings. Some hybrids lose power after an inverter coolant warning. One engine seized before 30,000 miles, and the owner says the warranty claim was refused. Owners also report coolant leaks that dealers blamed on pebble damage, excessive oil consumption, and engine knocking after a dealer oil change. Dealers frequently find nothing wrong.
Steering7No crashes
Loud squealing or squeaking comes from the column, sometimes sounding like a bird or rodent. The noise tends to be worse in cold weather or with lane keeping assist engaged, and some owners also find the wheel tight or hard to turn. Reports start as early as 1,328 miles. Dealers often can't reproduce the noise and want to hear it in person. Owners say the fix others received was a replacement steering column. One report pairs a stiff wheel with every dash warning lighting up at once.
Fuel system4No crashes
Hybrids hesitate or lose power when the driver asks for acceleration. Owners describe up to a second with no response after slowing to a crawl, power cutting out under hard throttle, and a message to park and charge the battery. Dealers have told owners this is normal hybrid behavior. In one case the fuel pump, relay assembly, and smart junction box failed around 35,000 miles and left the driver stranded. Another car kept setting the same fault codes after the high pressure fuel pump was replaced twice.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
The front panel of the panoramic sunroof shatters without warning at highway speed, with a gunshot-like bang. When the shade is open, glass drops into the cabin. The other problem is the windshield: one cracked from top to bottom while the car sat parked at about 900 miles, and another owner reports repeated chips and cracks within months. No crashes or injuries are reported here, but owners describe glass falling near the driver.
Brakes4No crashes
These reports cover several different faults. Brakes engage on their own with a warning light on and no traffic ahead. Rotors cause vibration and grinding above 55 mph and fail again after a recall replacement. One owner says the car rolled down a sloped driveway while in park on three occasions, once nearly hitting a family member. Another needed brakes and rotors earlier than expected. Dealers often can't reproduce the problems.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
Automatic emergency braking activates with nothing ahead and brings the car to a full stop in the road at 35 to 50 mph. Owners also describe a collision warning that sets off nearly every alarm in the car, which keeps sounding after a restart, along with recurring communication errors on the dash. Dealers say they can't act without stored codes. A replaced instrument cluster and software updates have not stopped repeat episodes.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Sorento owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I was driving down the highway on cruise control going 67 on a 65. The car started revving up and then proceeded to go faster. I turned off the cruise control but its continued to speed up. I stomped on the brake 4 or 5 times with no effect. I rammed into the back of a bus at 110 mph.

Was driving on Dallas North Toll way when my vehicle lost acceleration. Had to pull over and engine started smoking and lit a flame under the hood. Car is now at Clay Cooley Kia in Irving, TX. Car has been there for over two weeks and I still have no answers or information regarding the plan to fix it. Major dealership delay and all they keep saying is “Waiting on a Kia Engineer to come out but we don't have a date.”

CURRENT MILEAGE 6,776 miles -Purchased the vehicle and on two occasions the AEB Emergency brake system came on twice without any cars around- Also, twice the engine shutdown light came on and acceleration has stopped on me and the vehicle stalled, which is dangerous if Im on the parkway or road where I cant pull over like a bridge. NICE LOOKING CAR BUT DONT BE FOOLED- A RECALL NEEDS TO BE SENT TO PROTECT OTHERS FROM A CRASH IMMEDIATELY.

Engine light came on and I don’t have 30,000 miles on my car. The service tech informed me that they’ve seen this and Kia had not issued a recall
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
The blind spot assist warning came on, with no other cars around, and then the engine seized. This Sorento is a 2023 and only had 29000 miles. The engine is now destroyed and kia is not upholding the warranty.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2024
I was driving home from work when I felt my car was in a limp like a previous problem I had except this time I had a check engine light come on. I was almost home and I had a check hybrid system pop up on my dash and the car basically stopped driving. Luckily I was on a side street. I had a p0171 code on both of my issues . I had it fixed about a month and half ago the first time but couldn't say what caused the issue.

Where the 2023 fits in the Sorento's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2023 is the third model year of the Sorento's fourth generation (2021–2023).
Kia updated the Sorento for 2024, so a 2023 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2023)
- New exterior design elements
- Updated technology features in interior
