Which Sorento is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Kia Sorento. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–25 mpg |
| 3.3L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 21–22 mpg |
- The 2019 Kia Sorento was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sorento that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Kia Sorento, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine93No crashes
Fires lead this category. Several reports describe smoke from under the hood followed by flames, sometimes after a rattle, stall, or check engine light, and sometimes with no warning; some vehicles were total losses. The more common pattern is oil loss. Engines burn oil between changes, the oil pressure light flickers, and the oil pressure sensor leaks or fails, often past 80,000 miles. Some owners face full engine replacement after rod bearing failure or worn rings. Dealers frequently order oil consumption tests that end without a diagnosis.
Electrical613 crashes
Sudden power loss while driving is the most serious pattern. The battery light flashes, every warning light comes on, and power steering and braking assist drop out, in some cases at highway speed. Fire reports describe burning plastic smells, melted wiring, and flames under the hood. Water leaking from the dash into the cabin is linked to infotainment restarts, a failed backup camera, wet carpet, and mold. Other complaints cover steering wheel buttons that stop working, a faulty airbag wiring harness, and theft attempts. Dealer repairs often drag on for weeks.
Transmission43No crashes
Two problems dominate. The first is a failing oil pressure switch. The oil light comes on at idle, oil drops between changes, and owners pay out of pocket because the extended coverage given to earlier Sorentos does not apply. The second is transmission hesitation from a stop, followed by surging or bucking, worst in Eco mode and often starting in the first few thousand miles. Dealers often cannot reproduce it and just reset the computer. Some reports describe rod bearing failure, heavy oil use on the 2.4, or a transmission replaced because of burnt fluid.
Body and structure29No crashes
Snow White Pearl paint peels off in sheets, mostly on the hood and roof, sometimes spreading to doors and leaving bare metal exposed. It usually starts somewhere between 28,000 and 54,000 miles and keeps getting worse. Owners report damage even on garaged cars and after car washes. One driver had a paint flake stick to the windshield and block the view. Dealers refuse repairs once the 3-year or 36,000-mile paint warranty ends, and goodwill requests rarely go anywhere. Some owners have paid to repaint half the car.
Exterior lights16No crashes
Low beams cast a dark shadow line, often with two hanging shapes, straight across the driver's view on dark roads. Some drivers also see beams that bounce or swing side to side. Dealers usually call it normal behavior. Re-aiming tends to blind oncoming drivers or makes the shadow worse. A second pattern involves headlight bulbs that burn out within days or weeks of being replaced, which points to wiring trouble. Corroded and melted turn signal wires and a taillight that stayed dead after a harness replacement also appear.
Acceleration and cruise control101 crash
Hesitation followed by a sudden surge is the core complaint. The car stumbles when pulling out from a stop, gives no response for a few seconds, then lunges forward, which owners say has caused near misses while merging. With cruise control set, some vehicles jerk, surge, or go faster than the set speed. Others report cruise shutting off along with ABS and forward collision warnings. One report describes runaway acceleration traced to a throttle shaft, and another a failed high pressure fuel pump. Dealers often cannot replicate the problem.
Brakes61 crash
ABS and stability control warning lights come on, at first now and then and later more often, sometimes together with forward collision and Auto Hold warnings that switch off cruise control. Repairs range from a rear wheel ABS sensor to replacing the hydraulic electronic control unit, and some owners paid themselves because their VIN was not covered by a related recall. Other reports describe no ABS action during hard stops, long stopping distances, and brakes that skip before grabbing. One driver says repeated stopping trouble ended in a crash.
Seat belts51 crash
Rear belts come unlatched by themselves, and in one report both rear belts tore apart at the seams. These problems show up very early, sometimes within the first few hundred miles. In other reports the front passenger belt releases without a chime, or the reminder never sounds when the belt is left unbuckled. Dealers did not diagnose these problems or offered only a one-time courtesy fix. One crash report filed here actually describes repeated brake failure blamed on a brake booster vacuum hose.

I have a 2019 Kia Sorento with 79096 miles and on 3/24/2023 after taking it to the dealership for an engine diagnostic the car cut off while i was driving it in traffic. No warning or anything. The dealer state that a new engine is needed however the VIN is not on the Kia Recall settlement however i bought this car certified used i am the second owner and the car is still fairly new to have died so soon after having regular mainenance.

The engine blew up. I have all of my oil change receipts and gave them to West Herr Kia, and per Kia West Herr, Kia denied covering the blown engine because the piston went through the engine with great force. This happened at approximately 110,000 miles. West Herr Kia quoted 10,400 to replace the engine. Please let me know if you would like copies of the oil changes. I won't be able to upload all.of them.

ongoing headlight malfunction since 2022, ongoing electrical issues with vehicle. vehicle headlight does not work on multple occasions despite being serviced at the dealership and replaced 4 times in 2 years. this occurs to both headlights. it is currently random for the right but constant for the left cover (backing) of headlight looks like it exploded. plastic is puffed out. Dealership had vehicle from 5/4/2023 to 8/1/2023. returned unresolved

Infotainment center glicthing while driving Attempted to resolve with KIA after ongoing issues but they do not feel that this is a safety concern or feel it needs to be investigated appropriately. This occurs when driving typically on the highway because most of my travel is highway. When this occurs it is a distraction for the driver. It interferes with the ability to use hands free/calls/gps. Timestamped photos and video available

Car has 77,593 miles. The oil light came on only at idle. Immediately hauled to dealership and was told it was a faulty pressure switch and not covered by the warranty even though its part of the powertrain and the earlier models had the same problem and were extended. Should I expect every 77,000 miles or so to have to spend $1700? The tech said no because they are replacing the known faulty switch with new version of it.

Pieces and or flakes of vehicle paint are falling off the body of the vehicle. Mainly affected areas is the top front portion of the roof above the windshield and front of the hood. Paint started peeling off around the 28,000 mile mark. I’m currently at 30,000 miles. Keeps getting worse. A piece of paint peeled off and was stuck to my windshield and I could not visibly see the road. Had to pull over and remove the peeled off piece of paint

The paint on the hood and roof have been peeling and metal is now exposed. There appears to be a primer or paint defect. This occurred 4 years into owning the vehicle. Kia connect and dealership refuse to do anything since they said paint warranty is only for 3 years or 36,000 miles. But this is negligence from the manufacturer.

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
22V703000Trailer HitchesPark outsideSep 2022
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.
Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.
23V639000Backup cameraSep 2023
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2019 Sorento vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error, water may leak into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add additional water proofing to the camera harness, or replace the camera as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 8, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC282.
