Which Tucson is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Hyundai Tucson. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 25–28 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylHybrid | AWD | 38 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 420 mi range |
- The 2024 Hyundai Tucson was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tucson that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Tucson, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Acceleration and cruise control122 crashes
The car slows sharply on its own, sometimes dropping to 20 or 25 mph while the driver presses the gas. Some reports point to speed limit assist switching on unprompted. A restart usually clears it. Others describe hard automatic braking at highway speed when cars pass on both sides at once. A smaller group reports sudden acceleration while parking or stopped, including a crash with an injury at 2,900 miles. Dealers typically find no codes.
Automatic emergency braking12No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages at 50 to 75 mph with no vehicle ahead. The red warning flashes and the car brakes hard for a few seconds, sometimes several times within minutes. Drivers describe near rear-end collisions, including with an 18 wheeler behind. Dealers cannot reproduce the fault and find no trouble codes, and some owners turn the system off. A few report the opposite problem: no warning or braking when another car cuts in.
Electrical101 crash
Horns fail, often in under 15k miles. They sit low behind the front bumper, which must come off to replace them, and a service bulletin covers the horn assembly. The battery drains after the car sits for several days, leaving the fob dead and the engine needing a jump. Other reports describe stalling at speed with warning lights and a dark cluster, headlights cycling on and off in daylight, and water leaking past the windshield. One crash involved sudden acceleration while parking.
Brakes92 crashes
Most of these reports describe automatic emergency braking with nothing ahead, on highways, side roads, and in cruise control. It cuts speed sharply while the driver is still on the gas. One driver was rear-ended in an intersection and injured. Many cars were only weeks or months old. A separate crash involved the brakes not responding on an icy road in snow mode, with a concussion and fractured ribs. Other reports cover constant brake squeal and a lane assist swerve.
Airbags41 crash
No deployment occurred in an intersection crash that left the driver badly bruised across the chest and abdomen, with neither the seat belt nor the air bag holding them. The SRS warning light also comes on, and replacements happen early: one car needed a new air bag at 6,176 miles, another had it replaced twice. Several reports filed here actually describe the emergency braking system braking hard for no reason, then releasing. Dealers could not duplicate that fault.
Transmission41 crash
Hybrid models lose power with a check hybrid system warning. The car coasts and cannot climb a hill until it is restarted. Hesitation from a stop appears very early, in one case at 331 miles, and other cars shut off without warning. One crash involved the car rolling forward in stopped interstate traffic despite the brake and Park, then hitting a semi. Dealers generally cannot duplicate these faults.
Engine31 crash
Hybrids hesitate when pulling away from a stop. There is a delay of a second or more, sometimes several seconds, before the car responds, and then it lunges forward. Drivers describe nearly being broadsided pulling into busy intersections. No codes or warning lights appear, and repeat dealer visits have not fixed it. One crash involved the engine revving and the car accelerating on its own when shifted into drive, hitting two parked vehicles.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Rear turn signals sit low and are small, so a close or tall vehicle behind may not see them. Drivers report other cars not expecting their turns, and some add aftermarket lights to make the signals more visible. In winter, the headlights get covered in slush and snow, cutting night visibility. An obstruction warning appears, and the driver must pull over to wipe the lights clear. Dealers have found no fault.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tucson owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The forward collision avoidance system made me have accident. I was driving on the expressway, the forward collision made the car stop abruptly, then accelerate. As I was veering to the right, the car stopped again in the middle of the expressway causing me to have an accident. This is unacceptable and very unsafe. This vehicle is not safe to drive with the collision warnings.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2024
Driving 70 on the interstate without any cars in front or side of me and car auto hard braked down to 60 and red emergency brake light was on. An 18 wheeler was behind me. Luckily no injuries or accidents happened.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
Car throttle, AC, Cruise control, car transmission and gears not correct, radio turns off completely and messes up CarPlay. Also no updated radio. Scary car is still new with all of these issues.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2024
the entire computer system shorted out throughout the entire car. It did not let me select above all of what it affected. The entire car malfunction due to the dealer not doing predelivery inspection. They have the vehicle and have not given me a written explanation or reports as to what happened to cause this. This vehicle was defective and dangerous and should not have been sold.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2023
Sudden hard breaking for no reason. It's happened 3 times when in cruise control. If a car had been close behind it would have caused a wreck. I've had the vehicle just over a month
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
At high speeds above 40 MPH vehicle automatically brakes with no vehicle or objects in front while vehicle is in operation. Very concerning when driving on interstate.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tucson vehicles equipped with an optional Mobis tow hitch wiring harness. The wiring harness may have been installed incorrectly, allowing water into the control module. Moisture accumulation may cause the trailer lighting to fail or an electrical short circuit.
Risk: Nonfunctioning trailer lights can increase the risk of a crash. A short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the trailer wiring harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 16, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 290.
