Which Sportage is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Kia Sportage. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

1.6L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD38–43 mpg

  • The 2024 Kia Sportage was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sportage that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Kia Sportage, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical17No crashes

The instrument cluster goes black for several seconds while driving, then reboots with a system check. Speedometer and warning lights vanish during the blackout, and cruise control can drop out. Dealers replace clusters and charging pads and push software updates, but many reports say the blackouts return because the shop cannot reproduce them. Another pattern is sudden power loss or stalling at intersections and on the interstate. All dash lights come on, hybrid system failure messages appear, and the car may not restart for minutes. Some owners also report random lock failures and battery discharge warnings.

  • Acceleration and cruise control82 crashes

Cruise control sets itself to 110 mph and the car surges forward. The down button does nothing, and turning cruise off and on brings back the same setting. Only shutting the car off fully clears it, and it often happens again later. Most reports come within weeks or months of purchase. Dealers call it a known problem with no fix and tell owners not to use cruise control. Two crash reports describe the car suddenly accelerating while parking and hitting a building.

  • Body and structure7No crashes

The panoramic sunroof explodes without warning, often at highway speed and with no debris or nearby traffic. Owners describe a gunshot-like bang and glass hitting their heads, eyes, and children in the back seat. Some drivers barely keep control. Several failures happen in freezing weather, and one dealer calls the break a manufacturing defect. The glass panel between the windshield and sunroof also blows out. Separately, roof trim and molding come loose at highway speed and flap against the roof.

  • Brakes51 crash

Front rotors warp early and send a left-to-right pulse through the steering wheel under braking. Reports put this at 4000 miles and under 18K. Some owners say the rotors were resurfaced or replaced more than once at their own expense, and then the rear rotors developed problems. Automatic braking also slams on with no obstacle present, including when water covers the rear camera while backing. One crash report describes a stiff pedal that would not stop the car while parking at 6,100 miles.

  • Wipers and visibility5No crashes

The windshield cracks with no impact, usually in freezing weather after the defroster or a heated deicer is used. One crack spreads from the mirror sensor housing, and another appears while the car sits parked at about 23,000 miles. Wipers also fail in heavy snow. Auto wipers that run under packed snow strip the wiper gear, and the dealer says the repair is not covered by warranty. In another report, a wiper falls out of sync in wet snow and lodges on the windshield frame. The fix is tightening the linkage.

  • Transmission41 crash

A warning to check the hybrid system and stop safely appears, then the car loses propulsion and goes into reduced power. One dealer calls it a known hybrid defect but refuses to repair it under warranty. In EV-only mode, the gas engine revs to about 3000 RPM, which the dealer calls normal. One crash report describes the engine revving and the car surging into another car while the driver braked to park. Another owner reports brake shaking that comes back after a rotor replacement, worsening between 23,000 and 24,500 miles.

  • Steering31 crash

The wheel freezes at 40 to 50 mph while a string of safety-system and power-steering warnings appears. The car has to be towed, and the problem returns after a dealer repair. A new car shows heavy wheel vibration within a day of purchase, and the dealer replaces a rotor after keeping the car for 8 days. One crash report with 2 injuries says the emergency brake engaged at the wrong moment and left the car unable to move before it was struck.

  • Automatic emergency braking21 crash

Driver-assist systems take steering control away from the driver. In one report, lane assist pulls the car back from a lane change in the rain, the car steers itself into a mountainside, and it rolls over. That crash lists 5 injuries. The other report repeats the cruise control fault seen elsewhere. The set speed jumps from 70 mph to 110 mph, a dealer reset fails, and the surge happens again two months later. Only two complaints are filed here, but both describe loss of control.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Sportage owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Blank Instrument Panel Screen. abnormal CAN message which can cause certain instrument clusters with a 4.2” screen to reboot while driving. During this rebooting, the cluster will not show information such as the speedometer or telltales for approximately five (5) seconds. As a result, the subject vehicles do not comply with the visibility and illumination requirements of FMVSS 101, §§ S5.1.2 and 5.3.1

Electrical
Cluster screen goes black The dealership has replaced the screen & completed a software update. I have several videos. The dealership states they can’t fix it because they can’t replicate it. So I send them a video when it occurs. I called Kia direct and was informed to get a new car. It’s been going on for a year. We purchased the car brand new.

Acceleration and cruise controlCrash reported
On Oct. 11, 2024, I was pulling into a parking spot when my vehicle suddenly accelerated. My foot was not on the accelerator. I braked but not in time to stop the car before it hit the side of a building. I was not injured, but do not want to use drive the vehicle until I understand what happened and whether this sudden unintended acceleration defect can be fixed.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Acceleration and cruise control
Cruise control suddenly jumped to 110mph. Could not adjust the speed. Could only turn off cruise control. It happened several times in a row. Car would speed up until I hit the brake.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Body and structure
The glass panel placed between the windshield and the Panoramic sunroof blew out with no external forces. Looking at other cases from online, this appears to be a problem dating back to the 2019 model. Attached are photos from the date of incident (12/31/2024) from 1/3/2025 and 1/17/2025.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Brakes
Car brakes automatically applied, for no reason. I was driving in a city street, around 20 or 30 mph. The car randomly applied the brakes (hard) then released the brakes. I was able to continue driving after. But the braking made me jerk forward to the point that it locked my seatbelt. It was raining. But the road was completely open, no obstacle.
