Which Sorento is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Kia Sorento. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 1.6L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 37 mpg |
- The 2021 Kia Sorento was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Sorento that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Transmission failure, loss of drive
5,606–17,802 miles
Hybrid inverter coolant warning
7,650–23,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Kia Sorento, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission98No crashes
Sudden loss of drive power is the dominant failure. The dash flashes "stop safely immediately," the check engine light comes on, and the SUV sticks in first gear, revs without moving, or refuses to engage drive or reverse. Several failures hit early, between 5,606 and 17,802 miles, often in traffic. Others describe hard clunks, slipping, and a dead pedal for about a second after rolling stops. Transmission replacements are common, and some replacement units repeat the same faults within a few hundred miles. Dealers often cannot reproduce intermittent cases.
Electrical31No crashes
Stalls at stoplights with the auto stop system, sometimes with no restart, are a repeated complaint. Some cars suffer total shutdowns: every dash light on, power steering lost, gears unselectable, or the engine refusing to switch off. Battery replacements often fail to fix it. Hybrids show a "Refill Inverter Coolant" warning that will not clear, reported from 7,650 to 23,000 miles, with dealers citing no available repair. Other reports involve recall 25V649000 parts being unavailable, a drive mode selector reverting to Eco, and a sunroof that will not close.
Engine17No crashes
Many of these reports are really transmission faults: low transmission fluid pressure warnings, electric oil pump codes, unexpected shifts into neutral, and power loss tied to Kia's SC250 campaign. Several owners say a software update did not stop the disengagement. Engines also shut off at red lights and need several restart attempts, and dealers often cannot duplicate the fault. Accelerator lag when pulling out from a slow roll is another pattern. Hybrids show a false inverter coolant message, and isolated reports cite a chronic oil pan leak and misfires.
Wipers and visibility5No crashes
Panoramic sunroof glass shatters with a loud bang while driving, including at 50 mph with no other traffic nearby, and Kia has denied warranty claims. Windshields also crack on their own, spreading from the top near the mirror mount even while parked. One report says the camera sensor does not fit the bracket on replacement windshields, including an OEM one. A single filing bundles unrelated early issues on a certified pre-owned car: an intermittent airbag light, A/C odor, and a weak charging pad.
Steering5No crashes
Scraping, metal-on-metal noise from inside the column while turning is one pattern, matching a Kia service bulletin on the column-mounted power steering bearing, though some VINs fall outside its range. More serious reports describe electrical failures that lock the steering and cut drive power at once, one needing a new computer and steering column at 72,000 miles. The lane-keeping steering assist disengages without warning on two-lane roads and curves. One car drifts side to side despite a dealer visit.
Acceleration and cruise control41 crash
Unexpected acceleration caused one crash: while parking, the car surged over a concrete stop into a building wall, and the engine kept racing in reverse until shut off. Other reports describe the "stop safely immediately" warning with no response to throttle or brakes, and brief hesitation when pulling away from stops or through turns that is hard to replicate. One owner reports false collision alerts slowing the car on an empty road and phantom cross-traffic warnings while parked.
Body and structure4No crashes
Paint failure is the main issue. Pearl white paint peels off in large chunks, and the blacked-out window trim on the Nightfall package wears away, in one case at 13K miles. A dealer refused coverage for the trim, calling it an environmental and washing problem. Separately, one fuel door stays stuck locked, leaving the owner unable to refuel without prying it open.
Trailer Hitches3No crashes
Nearly all of these reports concern recall 22V703000 and the long wait for repair parts. Owners say the recall part was unavailable and the manufacturer had taken unreasonably long, with dealers confirming the shortage. Two owners report no failure. The third reports a fire that started near the fuel tank after the SUV sat parked for about 3 hours. The vehicle was totaled, and a spouse burned a hand trying to remove belongings.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Sorento owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I started the car and it started having a hard time shifting around 13 and 30 miles an hour. And had a lack of power. No lights were on. Took it home and shut it off. The next day started the car and it told me to put it in park and the check engine light came on. I had no acceleration when in drive. Checked for powertrain recalls for my 2021 Kia sorento sx awd and 0 recalls came up for my vin #. It’s definitely a transmission powertrain issue.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
The transmission failed entirely after 3,738 miles, disabling the car. Fortunately, the vehicle was parked when the transmission failed. Loss of power while actively driving could result in serious risk, crashes or death. Upon completion of repairs, Kia Van Nuys self-reported to me that at least 4-5 2021 Kia Sorrento were currently in for repair with the same issue of transmission failure after only 3,000 - 4,000 miles.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2021
Inverter coolant refill light will not turn off. This is available for inspection. This could be a possible fire risk. Issue has been confirmed at dealership. Components have been inspected by manufacturer. Issue started around 23,000 miles.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2022
My electrical system failed. While on park I was unable to shut of the vehicle using the engine start stop button. After waiting for the vehicle to automatically turn off. The vehicle started trying to restart itself. The negative battery post had to be removed for the vehicle to stop. The entire safety system failed and all warning lights are still displayed on the dash. The backup camera and radio display went completely blank and was unavailable.

My 2021 Kia Sorento is waiting on a new transmission with no ETA. Thank goodness after it started driving rough and rocking back and forth while in park we took it to a Kia dealership. Dealership said we. needed a new transmission. I’m just glad we caught it before we had total engine failure going down the road like the recall states.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2023
I would like to report that the 2021 Kia Sorento SX X-Line Prestige I own has a chronic oil leak from the oil pan. The dealer has attempted to reseal the pan two times and has replaced the pan and gasket once as well. The vehicle has leaked oil since it was practically new and poses an environmental hazard.

Drivers Side Airbag Illuminates intermittently, A/C smells like dried urine, has stuttered while driving on 2-3 occasions phone charging pad does not actually charge phone instead just maintains whatever battery life is already in phone before placed on pad.,these are all issues within the first 30 days of purchasing certified pre owned Kia Sorento on 8/15/22

Where the 2021 fits in the Sorento's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the first model year of the Sorento's fourth generation (2021–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Kia updated the Sorento for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)
- New exterior design elements
- Updated technology features in interior
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
