Which Santa Fe is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD21–22 mpg
2.4L 4-cylAWD, FWD23–25 mpg
3.3L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Santa Fe that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine45No crashes

Heavy oil consumption is the main pattern, often starting between 85,000 and 100,000 miles. The oil light can come on within 1,000 miles of a change, and repeated dealer repairs often fail to stop the loss. Several reports end in sudden seizure or a full engine replacement, sometimes at highway speed. Some warranty claims were denied because the owner lacked oil-change receipts. Other complaints describe misfires, knock sensor warnings, loss of power, and stalling linked to idle stop-and-go. 4 complaints involve fire, including one engine that caught fire after the car was parked.

  • Transmission241 crash

The 8-speed automatic slips, shudders, and shifts harshly. Some cars rev without moving from a stop, and some lose power on the highway with the check engine light on, unable to go past 30 mph. Dealers have recalibrated transmissions, replaced parts, or said a full transmission is needed, and replacement torque converters can be on backorder. Other reports cover oil burning, oil pans cracking near the drain plug, and stalling at red lights. In one crash, the engine revved and the car hit a parked vehicle after idle stop-and-go engaged.

  • Electrical22No crashes

The engine shuts off at stoplights and will not restart, often after idle stop-and-go turns it off. Some failures come very early, between 1,000 and 5,014 miles, and a recall covers starter replacement and a software update. Other cars stall while driving, start poorly in cold weather, or need several tries to start even after a new battery and alternator. Driver-assist warnings light up together, and dealers find no fault codes. Headlight fuses keep blowing. One car caught fire while driving, and some owners waited months for a fire recall remedy.

  • Steering131 crash

Electric power steering cuts out or the wheel locks up while driving, in one case at about 2,000 miles. Fixes often mean a new steering column, and some dealers replace several parts without solving the problem. Lane keeping assist can jerk the wheel hard, fight the driver, or pull the car out of its lane while warnings flash. Blind-spot and collision system warnings come on and stay on until the car sits for hours. One crash involved the engine revving out of control while braking and steering did not respond.

  • Body and structure12No crashes

White paint peels, bubbles, and lifts off in sheets, mostly on the hood, without any impact damage. Pearl White cars are named specifically, and dealers often refuse coverage because the car is past warranty. The panoramic sunroof shatters on its own, sometimes at highway speed and sometimes while parked, with a loud bang and glass falling into the cabin. Dealers have declined to cover the sunroof under warranty. A smaller complaint involves a liftgate that will not open from outside and only beeps three times.

  • Brakes111 crash

Many of these complaints are about recall 22V056000, with owners waiting months because parts were unavailable. The automatic braking system also brakes hard with nothing ahead, at speeds up to 80 mph, and sometimes pulls the car left. Those failures show up early, at 1,656 and 7,000 miles, and dealers cannot reproduce them. Other reports describe a brake pedal that does not respond and ABS that activates at low speed and lengthens stopping distance. In one crash, the brakes failed and the vehicle filled with smoke, then caught fire.

  • Airbags65 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious frontal and side crashes. Most of these complaints involve injuries, including broken ribs, a broken sternum, and concussions. The side curtain airbags sometimes inflate only partway, so the occupant's head hits the window glass. In one rental car, the airbag did not deploy after the car struck a concrete wall in snow. Another complaint says the passenger airbag shuts off when the rider sits on a back-support cushion, and Hyundai declined to change that setting.

  • Acceleration and cruise control44 crashes

The car accelerates on its own while creeping into a parking space. The engine revs, the brakes do not hold, and the vehicle jumps curbs and hits poles, pipes, fences, or barriers. All 4 complaints involve a crash, and one car was declared a total loss. Airbags did not deploy in several of these impacts. Dealers have not been able to duplicate the failure, and one owner reports it happening twice within 18 months.

Engine
Driving on interstate when the car all of a sudden started shaking and the check engine light came on. Had it towed to repair place who said they could not touch it and had to go to Hyundai. Towed it there. Just advised today of the issue and that Hyundai wouldn't cover it. Car has just over 100k miles on it. The engine should not fail this soon. Cylinder 2 no compression was the reported issue. Without a car for several weeks.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
Vehicle is shuddering/jerking upon acceleration due to a defect in the 8 speed automatic transmission. This condition was reproduced by Hyundai of Plymouth, MA and documented on the repair order. Dealer states that a new transmission is required to fix this problem. Safety is at risk due to shuddering upon acceleration which causes hesitation in acceleration. My Hyundai Santa Fe is available for inspection. There should be a recall on this vehicle.

Transmission
For the past month my car has been stalling in traffic. The car stalls and then turns back on a few seconds later. It also stalls when I am accelerating after stopping for a red light. This situation is very dangerous and it means that I cannot drive my car expecting to be safe at all. It seems like the motor and the transmission are involved which makes the stalling very dangerous as those are major systems.

Where the 2019 fits in the Santa Fe's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the first model year of the Santa Fe's fourth generation (2019–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Hyundai fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Hyundai updated the Santa Fe for 2021, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2021 (not on a 2019)

  • New platform introduced
  • Updated design features
  • Enhanced safety technology

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Hyundai dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V181000Trailer HitchesPark outsideMar 2023

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Santa Fe, 2021-2023 Santa Fe HEV, 2022-2023 Santa Fe Plug-in HEV and Santa Cruz vehicles potentially equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Hyundai dealership. Water accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is completed. Dealers will install a new fuse and wire extension kit as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed starting May 16, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 244. This recall is an expansion of previous recall number 22V-633.
