Which Renegade is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Jeep Renegade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 26–27 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 24–25 mpg |
- The 2020 Jeep Renegade was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Renegade that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Jeep Renegade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical121 crash
The Uconnect touchscreen goes black, glitches, shows white lines or a discolored center, and takes the backup camera with it. One report says the fault returned after the unit was replaced, and another says it began in summer heat. A second pattern is more dangerous. The car shuts off while driving, sometimes at freeway speed, and some reports say it drops into park on its own. Restarts can be hard, and dealers often find nothing or point to a loose battery terminal. One crash and one injury are reported. A car that keeps running after shutdown and a stuck sunroof also appear.
Engine111 crash
Stalling at speed is the main complaint, often with no check engine light and no stored codes when the dealer looks. In one crash, the car stalled during a slow turn and rolled backward into another vehicle. Oil problems come up often: burning about a quart every 1,000 miles, plus leaks traced to the vacuum pump and gasket. Cooling fans break or quit, leading to overheating, coolant leaks, and shaking at idle. Other reports describe limp mode with high revs at low speed and a low-compression engine that needed replacing at about 80,000 miles.
Transmission7No crashes
Acceleration is the main problem. The car hesitates, then surges hard enough to jerk passengers, or it jerks and slips at 40 to 50 mph. One report describes a loss of power with check engine and service transmission lights at under 8000 miles. Some cars stall while driving and light up a long list of warnings, including ABS, air bag, and ESC. Dealers often cannot find a cause without a stored code, so some cars return several times. Other reports describe 4WD dropping to front-wheel drive in snow with power steering errors, and a car that kept running after being turned off.
Airbags55 crashes
All 5 reports involve crashes, with 7 people injured. The common claim is that the air bags did not deploy, including in a head-on collision, a 40 mph crash into another vehicle, and a severe crash into highway barriers. Several reports also say the seat belts did not hold occupants back. People describe hitting the steering wheel or dashboard and bruising from the belts. In rear-end crashes, occupants say they were thrown forward or, in one case, into the cargo area. One of these crashes happened at 11,900 miles.
Fuel system41 crash
The engine shuts off in traffic with no warning lights, leaving the car stopped in intersections or on highway on-ramps. Dealers sometimes cannot find a cause. In other cases they blame a failed fuel pump or a faulty fuel level sensor. One report describes a strong fuel smell caused by a pinhole in the fuel supply tube where it rubbed against the engine wiring harness, with no warning light. Another reports sudden acceleration while parking slowly with a foot on the brake, which ended in a crash into a building.
Acceleration and cruise control22 crashes
Both reports describe the car speeding up when the driver pressed the brake at about 15 mph. Each ended in a crash into a tree, and each driver was injured. One report is also flagged as fire-related, and that car was totaled within days of purchase. Neither driver reports a warning light before the crash. There are only 2 reports, but both describe a full loss of control at low speed.
Seat belts2No crashes
Two separate faults are reported. In one, the driver belt does not latch when buckled. In the other, the front passenger anchor pretensioner fails. Two complaints are too few to show a pattern. The air bag reports, however, include several crashes where occupants say their belts did not hold them back, so check belt function closely on any car you consider.
Wheels and tires2No crashes
The tread separates or the sidewall splits near the rim. One report describes a flapping noise at 35 mph, then tread separation found on both rear tires, which were Dunlop Signature 2 tires. Another describes a front tire blowing out at the rim while the rear tire on the same side began splitting in the same place. Both involve 17-inch tires. There are only 2 reports, and they point to the tires rather than the car.
In owners' own words

Infotainment system is highly defective even after replacement. The screen goes black, shows white lines and you're left unable to use your backup camera! After doing research this problem stems all the way back to 2016 renegades with the same system.

Backup Camera/Radio/UConnect screen is glitching to where I can no longer see the backup camera when in reverse, and can no longer see what is playing on the radio. This started happening less than 3 months ago, when the heat started ramping up. Backup camera is a safety mechanism, and while using the rear view mirrors is fine, the backup camera should work without fail.

My 2020 Jeep Renegade has been burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. Im sure many people do not check it as consistently as i do. Burning oil im sure is hard on the spark plugs, catalitic converters, and the emissions.

Engine stalled in much the same way as numerous other owners are describing on this forum. It happened on the freeway at 70mph in cruise control. Engine instantly killed, NO check engine light, dealership ran codes and found no errors. Very dangerous. Can Stellantis please diagnose this and get a recall. I don't trust this car and stopped driving it.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2025
Problem began on 1/1/22. I was out running errands when vehicle lost acceleration power, check engine light came on followed by a service transmission light. My vehicle is less than a year old with under 8000 miles on it and is regularly maintained. There is no foreseeable reason for it to be having problems
Filed with NHTSA, January 2022
Vehicle randomly stalls out, engine shuts off, while driving. Check engine, service fuel cut-off, parking brake, air bag, ABS, coolant temperature high, service ESC system lights and messages. All of these warnings and messages occurred during the stall out, never before. It's currently in the shop for the third time to figure out the problem and to get it fixed. The vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership/shop currently working on it.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia, 2018-2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, 2019-2023 Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, and 2024 Fiat 500E vehicles. A seat belt buckle switch sensor may be improperly connected, preventing the front seat air bag from deploying as intended.
Risk: A front seat air bag that does not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Fix: Dealers will repair the connection, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning August 27, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 82B.

A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors.".
Risk: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will update the radio display software, free of charge. Optionally, owners can choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update available as of May 1, 2020. The recall began April 27, 2020.
