Which Crosstrek is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD | 30 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 480 mi range |
- The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Crosstrek that averages well under the EPA 30 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Windshield cracks without impact
1,600–17,000 miles
Transmission or rear differential failure
6,000–50,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported

Wipers and visibility33No crashes
Windshields crack with no sign of impact. Cracks start at the bottom near the defrost vents, at the side edges, or around the rearview mirror, and some grow from 2 inches to 19 inches within days. Several appear overnight in a garage. Others start with a pop while driving or right after the wipers turn on. Many show up before 8000 miles, and some cars crack more than once. Dealers often call the damage a stone chip and send owners to insurance. Replacement must be OEM glass so the EyeSight camera works. A few moonroofs shatter at highway speed.
Windshields crack with no object striking the glass. Cracks run from the top edge toward the mirror mount, along the driver's side, or through the center, and reach about 10 inches. Reported mileages fall between 10,000 and 17,000. One crack forms while driving at 60 mph and blocks the driver's view. A repaired windshield can crack again in a new spot. Some dealers say they do not repair windshields.
Transmission61 crash
Transmissions moan or whine at low speeds and when backing up, sometimes with hesitation. Dealers replace them, and one fails at 6k miles and again at 34k. On the Hybrid, the rear differential fails with grinding while turning slowly in parking lots, around 12,000 and 50,000 miles, and the revised part needs extra components. Other reports describe sudden loss of all acceleration on the freeway that clears only after a restart, a lurch forward when shifting into reverse, and a plug-in hybrid rolling away with the charge cable attached in one crash.
Electrical5No crashes
Batteries drain flat after the car sits for 2 or 3 days, leaving it unable to start. Dealers blame short trips and suggest daily starts or a battery charger. On the Hybrid, the charge-cable interlock fails to keep the car in Park, so driving off breaks the connector and leaves bare pins exposed, a shock and fire hazard. A dealer-installed remote start leaves one car unable to start, followed by a harsh noise on cold starts.
Seat belts22 crashes
Front seat belts fail to hold occupants during collisions. Both reports involve crashes with injuries. In a rear-end hit at 60-65 mph, the driver's belt does not restrain, the head strikes the steering wheel and pillar, and the air bags do not deploy. The other describes the shoulder portion of the belt failing in a 16 mph impact.
Acceleration and cruise control22 crashes
The car accelerates on its own while parking at low speed, even with the brake pressed. Both reports end in crashes, one into a boulder at about 5 mph and one over a curb into a pole. One driver suffers a fractured jaw and lost teeth. Air bags do not deploy in either case, and no warning light appears beforehand.
Fuel system2No crashes
On the Hybrid, a fuel tank design flaw lets fuel corrode the tank and clog the vapor vent tubes, triggering a P0452 check engine light. Subaru covers the replacement parts under service bulletin 09-82-23R for 2019-2021 Crosstrek Hybrids and links it to high-ethanol fuel. A separate report describes stalling at intersections or when turning from a stop, after which the car runs normally.
Body and structure2No crashes
Glass fails without impact. A windshield cracks under the edge of the rubber seal and spreads six inches. A rear door window explodes while driving on a car about 1.5 years old. Both reports match the spontaneous glass breakage seen in the windshield and sunroof complaints.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Crosstrek owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My car was parked outside when one morning I noticed a 2-inch crack started from the edge of the windshield on the passenger side of my vehicle which grew to 19 inches in the following days. The crack feels smooth from the outside and to my knowledge didn't happen due to any impact. My vehicle is available for any inspection. I have not taken my car to the manufacturer regarding this issue yet.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2022
The windshield has formed a crack in the top middle around the area of the rear view mirror with no incident to cause it. The problem is easily identifiable and may cause safety issues if the crack spreads. At this time insurance representatives and the manufacturer have not inspected the windshield. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior. It just cracked out of nowhere.

Where the 2020 fits in the Crosstrek's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2020 is the third model year of the Crosstrek's second generation (2018–2023).
Subaru updated the Crosstrek for 2021, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2021 (not on a 2020)
- Larger front lower bumper cladding
- New Sport trim level
- 2.5-liter engine option
Recalls to confirm (1)
Recall repairs are free at any Subaru dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
23V080000ElectricalFeb 2023
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Crosstrek Hybrid vehicles. The harness terminal that supplies low-voltage power from the converter to the 12-Volt battery may corrode and break, preventing the 12-Volt battery from charging.
Risk: A 12-Volt battery that is unable to recharge can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the converter terminal mounting bracket. If corrosion is found on the terminals, the 12-Volt output harness and terminals will also be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 12, 2023. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRD-23.
