Which Soul is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Kia Soul. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2020 Kia Soul was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 243 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Kia Soul, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine1502 crashes

Oil burns off until the dipstick runs dry, often with no low-oil warning, and the engine then knocks, stalls, or fails outright. Owners describe stalling at highway speed and in intersections, flashing check engine lights, and dealers calling for full engine replacement, sometimes after finding metal shavings in the oil. Oil loss shows up from about 29,000 miles to past 135,000. Several under-hood fires are reported, one at just 600 miles, plus one case of unintended acceleration while parking. Some owners say their car passed a dealer oil consumption test or that coverage was refused.

Power drops, the car stalls, and the motor fails with loud banging or rattling, sometimes with blue smoke coming into the cabin or out of the exhaust. Owners report burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles with no visible leak, and dry dipsticks between top-offs, one at 135,637 miles. Diagnoses include a failed engine rod and complete engine failure, and some owners were told the car was out of warranty. One early report involves a thermostat failure and coolant repair at about 9,408 miles.

  • Transmission851 crash

Transmissions fail suddenly at highway speed. The engine revs, the tachometer surges or swings, and the car slows or will not move at all, often with no warning light. Most reports come early, between about 2,300 and 20,000 miles, and owners describe being stranded on interstates and bridges. Dealers typically replaced the transmission under warranty, but some owners waited weeks for parts. Other complaints here cover oil burning, engine knock, and engine failure. In one crash, the car rolled forward after being shifted into park.

  • Electrical201 crash

Many electrical complaints overlap with engine trouble: stalling, hard restarts, shaking, and check engine lights, sometimes after an engine replacement. Others describe every dash light coming on at random, a horn that cuts out intermittently, and an auto stop-start that switches on and off by itself. Theft comes up repeatedly, with break-ins through the ignition area and owners reporting higher insurance rates or limited coverage. Several owners say dealers could not reproduce the problem or wanted diagnostic fees before starting work.

  • Steering16No crashes

The electric power steering can lock up or stop working, most often at startup, with a steering warning light on. Restarting sometimes brings back assist, but some cars are towed. Other complaints describe a loud clunk from the base of the column at low speed starting around 2,300 miles, a faulty steering wheel assembly at 8,960 miles, and a wheel that will not return to center at very high mileage. A few owners report a sharp pull to the right, which a dealer blamed on lane keeping assist. At least one steering repair was covered under warranty.

  • Acceleration and cruise control61 crash

This small group covers unintended acceleration and stalling. Reports describe the car surging on its own from highway speed to over 80 mph, lurching forward into a parked car when stop-start restarted the engine, and stalling at 35-40 mph with warning lights on. One car caught fire after an oil leak. Other owners link the stalling to heavy oil consumption, and an independent mechanic replaced a failed throttle in one case.

  • Brakes51 crash

Most of this small group is about the idle stop-start system, not the brakes themselves. Owners hear a loud groan and feel the car shudder as the engine restarts at a light, and some switch the feature off every time they drive. One report describes a stuck valve in the ABS module that disabled a front caliper and caused a brake fluid leak. Another describes a hard brake pedal after the engine stalled, linked to a crash. The remaining entries mention oil burning or a no-start.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Paint lifts, bubbles, and peels on white cars, specifically Snow White Pearl, on the doors and hood, in one case on a car under 20k miles. Paint is the only clear pattern here. Single complaints describe fog lights filling with moisture on a nearly new car and mold throughout a car after an evaporator leak that happened before the current owner bought it.

  • Airbags32 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in frontal crashes, according to two reports. One crash at about 45-50 mph sent two occupants to the ER, and the other involved hitting a guardrail at highway speed. A third owner saw a passenger airbag warning light right after purchase. A dealer confirmed the system was defective, but the repair was delayed more than five months because parts were unavailable.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Soul owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
So my car (despite being regularly maintained) had complete engine failure. At 100,300 miles. I was told the bottom half of the engine had complete shut down due to excessive oil burning. The car would start but then when put in gear would die immediately. When originally noticed the engine would shut down when going from a stopped position into moving, usually through an intersection. Not safe at all.

Engine
I believe my car has been burning oil. The oil was empty at our last oil change only about 60,000 miles on car and we have had to keep adding oil to the car since then. I got extra concerned also when I saw alot of kia souls same year have gotten recalled for oil consumption, yet my vin number wasnt included... I have dropped a document in the comments with what the dealership said about it as well.

Electrical
Second engine installed in the car ceases to fire. Condition does not change with new sensors for camshaft nor crankshaft. Engine turns freely cranks but will not restart. Unreliable driving conditions. Mathew’s Kia wants $1400 upfront to start exam in blind faith to see if a properly serviced car has a common warranty claim

Electrical
Upon releasing the break, all warning lights appear (like when initially starting the vehicle). Then they usually all turn off again. From time to time, specific lights come on but disappear upon turning the engine off and then on again. In effect, it's hard to tell if there really is a maintenance issue or not.

Where the 2020 fits in the Soul's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Soul's third generation (2020 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Kia updated the Soul for 2023, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2020)

  • Revised headlights and taillights
  • New color combinations

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V259000EngineApr 2021

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Soul, and 2021 Seltos vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which may result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine, free of charge. In addition, Kia will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software. The recall began June 11, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC209.
