Which EcoSport is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Ford EcoSport. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L 3-cyl | FWD | 28 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD | 25 mpg |
- The 2020 Ford EcoSport was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A EcoSport that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Oil pump belt engine failure
33,000–90,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Ford EcoSport, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine274No crashes
Sudden power loss after an oil pressure warning is the dominant failure. Drivers describe the low oil pressure, check engine, and wrench lights, shaking, a car that will not go above 30 MPH, loud banging or ticking, and stalling at stops. Dealers find disintegrated oil pump drive belts and engines that need replacing, with failures cited near 33,000 and 41,376 miles. Most filings are about waiting. Owners hold a recall notice, but dealers say parts are on backorder, and one was told it could take a year. A few reports describe an abnormal odor through the vents.
A low oil pressure warning followed by a ruined motor is the main pattern. Power fades, sometimes on the highway or an on-ramp, followed by knocking and metal-on-metal noise. Dealers report metal shavings in the oil and a failed oil pump or chain, and the usual fix is a full engine replacement, quoted in one case at $6,800. Many failures land around 60,000 miles, just past warranty. Three reports involve fire under the hood or car, and some drivers say the brakes stiffened once the motor quit.
Transmission48No crashes
Loss of motive power at speed accounts for most of these reports. The engine revs without pulling, limp mode caps speed near 30 to 35 MPH, and the oil pressure light comes on. Dealers trace many cases to a broken oil pump belt or tensioner that ruins the engine, at mileages such as 72,000 and 90,000. Several owners say problems return after an engine replacement or recall repair, citing belt debris and a failed turbocharger. Two reports describe fires under the car after the engine seized. Engine backorders leave some cars parked for months.
Electrical9No crashes
Backup camera and screen glitches are the most common complaint. The camera switches on while driving, the screen goes blue or black, and radio and GPS stop working. Some owners say the screen shuts off to save battery and takes the dash and climate controls with it. Others report the car losing power or shutting off in park around 35k miles, instrument cluster lamp warnings, and one case of surging to 5,000 rpm in park. Water under the passenger seat from a clogged sunroof drain also appears.
Brakes7No crashes
Squeaking, groaning, or other abnormal noise when braking in reverse is the main brake-specific pattern. It shows up at 8,600 and 19,736 miles and returns after rear brake work. Several other filings tie brake trouble to engine failure: when the engine seizes or loses power, the pedal turns very hard and the car is slow to stop. One filing lists only a pending recall with parts unavailable and no failure.
Airbags64 crashes
Airbags that fail to deploy in a crash are the main concern, across four crash reports and two injuries. Drivers describe front impacts into trees and a rear-end collision with no deployment, plus a side impact where the curtain bags fired but the front bags did not. One report describes both front airbags deploying on their own at about 45 MPH, near 79,000 miles. Another owner saw an airbag warning light at about 90,000 miles that was never diagnosed.
Acceleration and cruise control5No crashes
Sudden loss of power when pulling away or passing is the main pattern. The check engine and wrench lights come on, and speed drops to a crawl in traffic. Some owners also see low oil pressure warnings or have trouble starting, and dealers often cannot find the cause. One report describes the opposite problem happening twice: the car surges forward while nearly stopped on a slight incline, with no warning lights, and the driver has to stomp the brake.
Suspension31 crash
Few of these filings concern the suspension itself. Two describe the engine oil pump belt tensioner breaking. The result is lost speed control on the interstate, a no-start, and engine damage, followed by waits of months for repair. The third describes a crash in which a box truck hit the stopped car at about 45 MPH and the seat bent, leaving the occupant with a concussion and other injuries.
Seat belts3No crashes
Belts that fail to retract or hold firmly are the common thread. Owners describe a stretched driver's belt that feels loose, and passenger belts that click abnormally and will not retract, which leaves the passenger unsecured. In one case at 84,000 miles, the dealer said the belt needed replacement. None of these reports mention warning lights.

See attached document for complaint. Text from document: After that encounter I called the dealership inquiring as to the availability of the specific repair parts for the recall I was told that unless I was already experiencing a problem they would not even look into the matter. This sounded ridiculous to me so I left messages for management but my calls were not returned.

Low oil pressure light came on out of nowhere. Had it towed and they said the oil pump belt tensioner belt was damaged. Destroyed my entire engine. Had 72,000 miles. Ford is saying they won’t pay because they don’t know how to fix it. It is the recall issue that ford released. I need help
Filed with NHTSA, January 2024
Oil pump failure at 90,000 miles, haven’t even had the car for two years. Since oil pumped failed the dealership says the motor is needing to be replaced. Cost is over $6,500.

My leased 2020 Ford EcoSport is at Merchant Ford of Selma, AL for three safety recalls: airbag system, engine oil pump failure, and rearview camera failure. The dealership told me they do not know how to fix the recalls, installed wrong parts, and the vehicle has been sitting for weeks without repair and without a loaner vehicle. They have stopped returning my calls. Ford has had years to remedy these recalls and cannot make the vehicle safe to drive.

I was on my way home from work approaching a red light coasting to a stop, I tried to slow down then I realized the car was accelerating and I pushed the brakes and pulled into a parking lot by the time I got in the parking lot the car was surging, really trying to takeoff. It went all the way to 5,000 rpm’s while I was in park.

25V442000Backup cameraJun 2025
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.
Risk: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.
23V905000EngineDec 2023
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.
Risk: A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S64.
20V791000AirbagsDec 2020
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 EcoSport and 2019-2020 Transit Connect vehicles. Depending on the model, either the driver side or passenger side frontal air bag modules are missing the first-stage booster propellant and sleeve. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection.".
Risk: Air bag modules missing the first-stage booster propellant will not deploy as intended in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag module on either the driver or passenger side, free of charge. This recall began February 18, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20C26.
