Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Jeep Renegade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical8No crashes

Several warning lights come on together and then flicker on and off: airbag, seat belt, parking brake, and stop/start. The seat belt chime keeps sounding with belts fastened. Messages claim brake lights or turn signals are out when they work. Some reports say the faults come back after dealer repairs. Owners also describe the engine shutting off at idle and false automatic braking at 45 mph that throws the driver forward. Other reports cover false lane and blind spot alerts, a battery replaced twice in under a year, and old screen images showing through the backup camera view.

  • Airbags3No crashes

The airbag warning light comes on, sometimes along with other unfamiliar lights and a steady dinging. Most of these complaints are about a recall repair that cannot be done yet. Dealers say the parts are not available, and owners say the wait has gone on too long. In one case a dealer said the airbags were inoperable, which means they may not protect people in a crash. One failure happened at about 17,000 miles. Some owners filed while waiting for parts even though nothing had failed.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The forward collision system triggers with no real hazard ahead. Drivers describe it activating when the nearest moving vehicle is far away, and warnings going off while passing cars that are sitting in a turn lane. This has happened repeatedly for some owners. Because the system can react on an open road, it creates a rear-end crash risk when traffic is close behind. The same false activations also appear in the electrical complaints, including hard automatic braking from highway speed.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Renegade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While driving, the auto stop/start light illuminated, the airbag light illuminated and the auto parking brake illuminated. The seat belt sign also lit up and would continuously chime even through the seatbelt was plugged in. All the indications would intermittently come on and off.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Electrical
The vehicle warning lights are on, for example the brake lights and turn signal, when these are working. The seat belt alarm goes off when seat belts are on. Vehicle has turned off when in an idled state. I have gone in to get these issues fixed and they came back.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Automatic emergency braking
When driving we can be a football field distance away from any moving vehicle and then forward collision safety feature activates. This has happened several times and could have ended badly if someone was behind us in traffic.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Jeep dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V918000Exterior lightsDec 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Jeep Renegade vehicles. The incorrect bumper reverse light assembly may have been installed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.".

Risk: The incorrect reverse lights may have reduced visibility, and not alert pedestrians and other drivers that the vehicle is backing up, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the bumper reverse light assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 30, 2025. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is D7B.

Fix: Dealers will repair the connection, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning August 27, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 82B.
