Which Renegade is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Jeep Renegade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.3L 4-cylAWD, FWD26–27 mpg
2.4L 4-cylAWD, FWD24–25 mpg
  • The 2019 Jeep Renegade was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Renegade that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Jeep Renegade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical231 crash

The center touchscreen fails. Reports describe vertical lines, a display split into columns, flashing static, and finally a black screen, sometimes worse once the car warms up. Because the screen runs the backup camera, climate controls, heated seats, and vehicle settings, a failure takes all of them out, and some units switch to metric readouts that cannot be changed back. Dealers recommend full replacement, with one quote over $1200. A second pattern involves the left taillight, with burnt wires and condensation. One crash is blamed on distraction from repeated electrical faults.

  • Engine8No crashes

Oil loss is the main thread. Reports describe burning oil with no visible leaks, low-oil warnings well before the next change, and MultiAir actuator failures that spray oil, melt spark plug caps, and crack valve covers, with parts on back order for months. Low oil pressure brings a check engine light and a cap near 3300 RPM that leaves the car unable to accelerate onto a highway. Cooling problems include a radiator seam leak, overheating, a cracked cooling fan, and leaking transmission cooler lines. Sudden power loss without warning lights also appears.

  • Airbags75 crashes

Collisions end with no air bag deploying, including a side impact, rear-end hits, and a slide into a ditch that left the car on its side. Five reports involve crashes, and five people were hurt, several needing medical treatment. Other reports describe an air bag warning light that comes on intermittently at higher mileage, and in one case stays lit after dealer repair work, with further diagnosis still pending.

  • Transmission71 crash

Shifting problems lead the reports: rough or delayed shifts when cold or after long drives, lurching, jerking, slipping, and a transmission that overheats at 54,000 miles. Stalling at highway speed with failed restarts also appears, with one car told it needed a new transmission and transmission module. Throttle body sensor faults send the car into limp mode below 10 mph. Other reports cover every warning light staying on with 4WD and the parking brake not working, plus a recurring P1DB7 check engine code.

  • Brakes41 crash

Front rotors warp and pads wear out quickly. Reports describe repeated rotor and pad replacements, with warping returning within a few thousand miles of a brake job and one car on its fourth set by 37000 miles. Brake noise also shows up on nearly new cars. A separate crash report says opening the driver door while in drive sets the emergency brake abruptly, and the car struck a parked vehicle.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

The Uconnect screen goes black or ghost-touches every button, and the speedometer and mileage readouts can lock into metric units, leaving the driver unsure of speed. Bubbling spreading across the screen and lost navigation are also reported. One separate report describes the car stopping unexpectedly at various speeds with a "service automatic throttle control" message, a fault that persisted after three dealer visits.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The rear camera image distorts or disappears because the display screen fails, often going black while the radio keeps working. The screen can also stay in reverse view for several minutes after shifting into drive. One dealer found a detached inner panel and called for replacing both radio and screen. Owners report little help from the manufacturer, with one failure dismissed as cosmetic and another car out of warranty.

  • Seat belts3No crashes

Seat belt sensors and latches misbehave. Rear belt chimes sound when no one is seated, forcing owners to buckle empty seats, starting about a week after purchase. A front driver belt can feel locked shut and refuse to buckle. Another report describes an unbuckled-belt alarm that keeps sounding with the belt fastened after a dealer service visit.

In owners' own words

Unconect system replaced once under warranty garblled screen goes black after 10 min. Backup camera does not work. No longer under warranty should be recalled many compliments on line 58000 miles

Electrical
2019 Jeep Renegade Uconnect screen started displaying vertical lines on the screen and eventually goes black. Cannot use any of the screen controls or use the backup camera. I have seen owners of various year models on Reddit experiencing the same issues with no recourse from Jeep since they are out of warranty. Our only option is to buy an aftermarket head unit or pay Jeep over $1200 to replace it with something that will fail again

Engine
Widespread Vehicle air pump failure in Jeep renegade is causing significant oil leakage and results in unsafe vehicle failure. This is reported across multiple forums as well as my own vehicle, which became disabled on the interstate. Upon inspection dealers are noting no oil even with scheduled oil changes and recommending full replacement of pump which has significant burden of cost

Transmission
Throttle body sensor, throttle body injector, and acceleration pedal are failing. I was in traffic and my car went into limp mode because of a code P2122 which is the throttle body sensor. My car did not want to go faster than 10 miles an hour.

Transmission
When vehicle is started ALL warning lights come on and stay on. 4WD does not work when this happens. Parking brake occasionally will not release when this happens. Unsure if hill start assist or other drive train issues will work when this problem occurs. Occasionally the alarms will not go off and the lights will not come on, when this happens 4WD will engage. This vehicle has been in the shop many times for this issue.

Risk: A front seat air bag that does not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will repair the connection, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning August 27, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 82B.

A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors.".

Risk: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
