Which Renegade is it?

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Jeep Renegade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

Several warning lights come on at once, including airbag, seatbelt, parking brake, ABS, and forward collision. A seatbelt chime often sounds even when the driver is buckled. In many reports the lights come with a stall or shutdown in traffic, loss of power steering, a locked steering wheel, or the parking brake engaging while the car is rolling. Problems often start within the first months of ownership. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, and owners describe repeated visits without a fix. A separate stop/start failure near 7,000 miles traces to the intelligent battery sensor.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Hesitation when pulling away is the main complaint. The engine revs high, the car delays for 2-4 seconds, then lurches forward. Owners report near misses when entering traffic or crossing highways. One dealer said the turbo needs those seconds to charge, and in another report an engine replacement did not fix it. Other complaints include erratic shifting, violent shaking at highway speed, and a loud bang from underneath during acceleration or turns. Owners also report shutdowns while driving, a fuel vapor odor even when parked, and all front exterior lights failing at the same time.

  • Engine3No crashes

Stalling, jerking, and surging happen both when pulling away and while driving. One report describes a complete loss of power near 9,040 miles that the dealer could not duplicate. Mechanics find oil leaks during routine service, including a rear main seal leak at 54,000 miles. A hot smell while driving or after shutoff has owners worried about fire. Only 3 complaints are on file, but each describes the car quitting or nearly quitting while moving.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The forward collision warning system stops working while driving, in one case with under 200 miles on the odometer. A failed module is the suspected cause. The replacement part has been stuck on backorder, and one dealer cited 155 units backordered across the US. Owners report slow replies from the manufacturer. The car has no collision warning until the part arrives. Electrical complaints also describe false collision alerts with nothing ahead.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Renegade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I have taken the car in since first oil change with an electrical issue. It still has not been resolved. The abs light, air bag, start stop and seat belt lights and sounds would go off. Potentially causing a whole host of issues. There is still no fix and this will be for fourth time I have taken it the dealer.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Electrical
Sensors randomly come on dash such as seatbelt that beeps even with the seatbelt on. Or the parking break light in which there has been a couple cases where it made the car turn off while rolling and engages parking break all on its on. It is ridiculous something needs to happen to get this issue fixed

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Automatic emergency braking
The “Forward Collision Warning” system failed while actively driving on the highway. The vehicle has less than 200 miles on the odometer. The vehicle has been checked into service for a possible failed module.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2022

  1. 24V918000Exterior lightsDec 2024

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Jeep Renegade vehicles. The incorrect bumper reverse light assembly may have been installed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.".

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the bumper reverse light assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 30, 2025. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is D7B.
