Which CR-V is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Honda CR-V. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 29–30 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | AWD, FWD | 37–40 mpg |
- The 2024 Honda CR-V was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CR-V that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Honda CR-V, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Steering1345 crashes
The wheel turns sticky or notchy, mostly above 40 to 50 mph and often after the car warms up on a longer drive. Drivers feel it catch, click, then release with a jerk, which forces constant small corrections to stay in the lane. Most reports start well under 6,000 miles. Dealers have replaced the electric power steering gearbox, but owners report back-ordered parts and slow work on the gearbox recall. A smaller group describes a sudden total loss of steering. 5 reports involve crashes and 3 involve injuries.
Wipers and visibility41No crashes
Glass breaks without any impact. Side mirrors crack overnight in freezing weather, windshields crack with no impact point, and sunroofs, rear windows, and side windows shatter with a loud bang, sometimes while the car is moving. Wipers are the other main complaint. They leave a film of water, the driver side wiper stops short, and at highway speed the washer fluid blows over the glass. The intermittent washer spray leaves the passenger side dry. Dealers often call this normal. Driver mirrors also vibrate above 65 mph, and replacing the mirror does not stop it.
Electrical262 crashes
Backup cameras switch from color to black and white, often from the day of delivery. Dealers say they have no remedy, and replacing the camera has not always fixed it. Other reports describe dashboard and center screens going dark, lane keeping and road departure error messages, and warning lights flashing at a cold start. Some drivers got a brake system warning followed by much weaker braking. 2 reports describe unintended acceleration ending in a crash, and 1 involved an injury. In one of those, the dealer found a failed battery.
Automatic emergency braking252 crashes
The car brakes hard on its own when nothing is ahead, sometimes to a full stop, with or without cruise control. Drivers report it at 30 to 65 mph, often within the first few thousand miles, and describe close calls with traffic behind them. Dealers usually cannot reproduce it. Snow on the front emblem can shut off cruise control, lane keeping, and automatic braking until the sensor area is cleaned. Driver assist systems also shut off at random with warnings. 2 reports involve crashes with 2 injuries, including a rear-end collision after an unneeded stop.
Transmission211 crash
Reports describe serious engine and transmission failures on low-mileage cars. In one, the CVT failed at 24k miles after clunking, hesitating, and surging. In another, all four fuel injectors failed and a head gasket repair followed. Hybrids shake, rattle, and tick when switching between EV and gas modes. Several owners say the car rolled forward with reverse selected until they restarted it, and one reports the car rocking back and forth after being shifted into park. Others describe warning floods that cut speed to 20 mph, and delays getting the steering recall done. 1 report involves a crash.
Body and structure14No crashes
Side mirrors crack on their own, usually on frosty mornings, and dealers have refused to cover the repair under warranty. Driver mirrors vibrate at highway speeds, and replacing the glass or the whole mirror assembly has not fixed it. The hood flutters on bumps and at highway speed because the adhesive holding its underside reinforcements fails, and a replacement hood had the same problem. Other reports cover moonroofs shattering, door trim melting in the sun, water leaking through the rear hatch, a liftgate closing on people, and a weak single-note horn.
Acceleration and cruise control101 crash
Adaptive cruise control brakes hard when a car ahead turns off, takes an exit, or changes lanes, sometimes slowing almost to a stop on an open road. Other reports describe a sudden loss of power on the highway after emissions or power system warnings, and one dealer traced it to a fuel injector problem. A few owners report the car speeding up on its own while parking or after the brake is released, and one says the car rolled forward with reverse selected. 1 report describes a crash into a parked car at about 46,000 miles.
Fuel system10No crashes
Most of these reports cover recall 24V763000 for the fuel system. Owners received the recall notice, but dealers had no parts to do the repair, and most of these owners had not had a failure. Among the actual failures, one car lost power with an engine system warning at about 23,980 miles. Another set a check engine light after water got into the canister valve, and replacement parts were unavailable. 1 report describes a fire that started at the rear while driving and destroyed the car. The cause was not determined.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints CR-V owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
While driving, in particular on the highway, the steering wheel becomes suddenly stuck in its position. I am able to overcome the stickiness with a mild amount of effort. I currently have 5700 miles on my vehicle and it appears to be getting more noticeable over time. I have a call into the Honda dealer to have this issue addressed. I am waiting for them to call me back. I have received no warning from my vehicle that there is a problem with the steering.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
At about 4,500 miles I noticed at higher speed over 50 miles per hour a sticky steering wheel. Steering felt like it would click and hard to keep wheel straight. Constant back and forth to keep straight. Took the vehicle into AutoNation Honda Roseville on 1/5/24 with a mileage of 4,841. They determined after driving it that the EPS Gearbox needed to be replaced. This part is back ordered, and I still as of today 4/2/24 do not have the part replaced.

I park my car in my own driveway (safe neighborhood and also with security camera) and there was no external damage. Car is new (bought in March 2024) and had less than 7,000 miles.

My car was sitting in idle with the engine on for approximately five minutes, then all of the sudden the engine started to make loud tractor engine-like loud noises. The dashboard was bombarded with warnings. I turned the car off, and waited a few seconds. After I restarted the car, the check engine light turned on and the system reverted to one warning on the screen which read "Emissions system problem. Power may be reduced. See your dealer."

Had all of the warning adaptive driver assistance systems malfunction off all of a sudden warning me to pull over and contact dealer. Car was driving fine but scared me so much that I pulled over. Awaiting to hear back from dealer. I bought the brand new 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid in January and it has 12000 miles on it so far.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2024
My wife was driving on a 4 lane road after it was wet. The road is flat but bended to the right. Traveling in the middle lanes, the braking system engaged and the brakes fully locked while she was at a driving speed of 25 mph and the car slid across the lanes as she entered the turn. She said it lasted for about 10 seconds before the brakes disengaged.
