Which Traverse is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD21–23 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Traverse that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Brake master cylinder failure

    300–9,450 miles

  • Transmission leak or failure

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes652 crashes

A group of brake warnings comes on at once: ABS, traction control, forward collision and parking brake lights, plus Service ESC and Service Brake Assist messages. Dealers usually trace it to a failed brake master cylinder, often on cars with only a few thousand miles. Some cars have under 300 miles. The pedal can turn spongy, soft or very hard, sometimes with a front-end clunk or leaking fluid. Two complaints describe crashes after a hard pedal failed to stop the car. Replacement parts are on national backorder, so cars sit at dealers for weeks.

  • Electrical281 crash

Many of these complaints repeat the master cylinder and ABS failure, with messages such as "Brake Assist failure. Press hard to brake. Speed Limited" and pedals that need full force. Other reports describe a dead OnStar or telematics module. It takes GPS, connected services, software updates and adaptive cruise down with it, and parts are backordered. Some owners also report an instrument cluster that goes blank, a dead battery, and a false liftgate-open alarm that disables the rear wiper. One crash complaint with an injury says the front and side curtain air bags did not deploy in a side impact.

  • Transmission10No crashes

The transmission leaks fluid, sometimes heavily, and then fails. Cars lose power at highway speed, the RPM shoots toward the red zone, and the car will not engage drive or reverse. Several cars are towed. Other complaints describe slipping, jerky or erratic shifts, and hesitation when accelerating. Most failures come early, between 500 and 4k miles. One owner cites a GM service bulletin for a fluid leak near the torque converter. A backordered valve body and repairs lasting weeks are common. Sudden power loss in highway traffic creates real collision risk.

  • Body and structure7No crashes

The roof-mounted shark fin antenna cover comes loose and flies off, sometimes on the highway and sometimes in a touch-free car wash. That turns it into debris for traffic behind. Owners describe weak or broken mounting clips, and one dealer refused warranty coverage because the car went through automatic car washes. Smaller complaints cover door panels that vibrate hard at 60 mph with the rear windows down and a door latch that stuck until the door would not open.

  • Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes

These complaints describe the same brake system fault filed under another category. The brake, ABS, forward collision and traction control lights come on together with Service ESC and Service Brake Assist messages. Brakes go soft and the car can slow itself, showing "brake assist fail, press hard to brake, speed reduced." Restarting may clear it for a while before it returns. Dealers point to the master cylinder, and parts are on nationwide backorder. One car was down 8 weeks after a new cylinder would not program.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

The car brakes on its own at low speed, vibrates the driver's seat and shows a "Pedestrian Nearby" alert with no pedestrian present. That report came a week after the telematics control module was replaced. Another complaint says Super Cruise stopped working. A third involves a master brake cylinder failure after 4K miles, with a wait of 4-6 weeks for parts.

  • Steering3No crashes

The wheel goes loose or stiff at the same time as ESC, ABS and forward collision warnings come on. One car showed "Do Not Drive the Vehicle over 62 MPH," and the dealer found the brake plunger motor temperature too high. Another car felt unbalanced, with excessive play in the wheel, past 10,000 miles. A separate report describes hands-free driving that changed lanes, then signaled back toward a car alongside, and the driver had to grab the wheel.

  • Engine3No crashes

Two of the three complaints here are actually transmission failures, at 7100 and about 9,500 miles. One of those cars has been in the shop close to 3 months. The third describes a fuel injector failure on cylinder 4 at 120 miles. It caused a rough idle, a check engine light and code P0300, and the dealer quoted up to 10 days for parts.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Traverse owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
Car has 1200 miles on it. Turned on and dash lit up with warnings. Took to dealer who confirmed the master cylinder is bad & must be replaced. Worse than that—it is back ordered and I am currently given an estimate of July for the replacement part. Hadn’t even made the first payment on my brand new vehicle before it had to be taken in and now I am without it for an unforeseen amount of time.

Brakes
Warning codes - Service Brake Assist, Service Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Forward Collision system unavailable. Brake pedal felt different with an associated clunk noise. Brake Fluid believed to have been leaking in garage. Dealer diagnosis as Master Brake Cylinder failure. No parts available/no ETA available. Car is 5 months old and under 5,000 miles on the odometer.

Electrical
We purchased this 2025 Chevy Traverse on 6-13-2025. The dash goes dark/blank thus not allowing me to know the speed, amount of gas nor any information on the driving including driver assist measurements. I have taken the car in twice with no satisfaction. I received it back on Friday - 8/22/2025 and within 3 miles the screen was blank again. This makes the vehicle unsafe and dangerous.

Electrical
I star failed and I could not use any of my lane assist. All features quit working that were to help me with other cars approaching failed. Radio quit work it working. Battery in car needed to be replaced and car needed to be jumped started. Curse control did not work. Had less than 2000 miles on car. Safety features in car quit working.

Transmission
After owning the vehicle for 13 short days, the check engine light came on and a message appeared indicating the vehicle could not be put in reverse due to unsafe vehicle condition. The vehicle just hit 500 miles at this time. Brought vehicle to the dealership 7/14 and it is still there diagnosed with needing a valve body for the transmission which is on back order and no estimate on when it will be available.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
Vehicle has 4k miles, sudden loss of power at highway speed, rolled to right lane and fortunately had an exit close by. Engine runs and revs fine, could not engage gear (neither D or R), stuck in P. Vehicle had to be towed. Repair took almost 3 weeks, dealer reported trans fluid leak and multiple trans pump bolts loose.

Body and structure
One day My husband went to work and the antenna fin was attached, he came back home and it was no longer there . We do not car wash my car since its brand new. We hand wash it our selves there should be zero reason for that to come off. Apparently is a very common problem in the 2025 traverse. I joined a Facebook group and over 40 people had the same issue.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Body and structure
While driving with the front windows all the way up and the back windows all the way down at 60mph or higher the door panels vibrate real bad like they want pop off from the frame of the car, which is unacceptable. You should be able to drive with windows how you want to in you vehicle without your door vibrating like they want to pop off.
